Not everything is about immigration

The terms of reference for the Casey Review have been launched today, with a focus on building consensus over tangible recommendations to improve adult social care over the next ten years. A few takes from me and @cglobont.bsky.social .social & @natashacurry.bsky.social:

Well Stoke has two canals, Trent & Mersey with the Harecastle Tunnel and the Caldon. I hope all those new Reform councillors keep a watchful eye morning, noone and night for the small boats (which are all booked in advance grrr).

We'll see how things work out in the 2029 elections.

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 17:16

No it's not all about immigration

Nigel Farage, "I would advise anybody who is working for Durham County Council on Climate Change initiatives, or Diversity Equity and Inclusion"

"I think you all better really be seeking alternative careers, very very quick"

Piggywaspushed · 02/05/2025 17:18

Well, that's terrifying.

Saucery · 02/05/2025 17:24

What a fucking snake.

Notonthestairs · 02/05/2025 17:25

Well, it’s not like women benefited from any of that 🙄

MsJinks · 02/05/2025 17:26

Wow - I didn't think they'd do much damage locally - totally terrifying.

Rivypike · 02/05/2025 17:26

He’s a great guy though, very popular and charismatic…as someone on a different thread said. Took us through Brexit and all that.

Yeah, all about owning the libs.

Saucery · 02/05/2025 17:29

@Rivypike I have to ask, are you named after Rivington Pike?

Notonthestairs · 02/05/2025 17:35

Sacking people is easy.
It’s a lazy way to begin tenure.
Prioritising & improving services - especially social care and SEN is not.

We all need to take our fare share. To reach France they’ve often been through 3/4 counties already. If they could reach safety and then claim asylum and we took into account where people want to be it would be such a better system.

The issue is no one can claim asylum from abroad. They can’t all live in refugee camps on the boarders of their dangerous counties.

Albanian men used to be the main group coming over on small boats. The main human rights violation in Albania is domestic abuse against women.

I’m not against immigration but I think it is a complicated issue.

Of course, we don’t actually have DEI.
That’s an American term.

Its almost as if Farage doesn’t have any policies of his own.

Rivypike · 02/05/2025 17:26

See I genuinely don’t see charisma - I have been repulsed from first seeing him - way before he upset me with Brexit. He makes me feel sicker than Trump on a visceral reaction level - I know many disagree but I honestly cannot see anything appealing about him (leaving aside his equally repulsive politics).
I also have a long held belief he secretly laughs at most supporters - as if he genuinely wants to drink beer with plebs in the local boozer - it is so fake.

Piggywaspushed · 02/05/2025 17:45

Did anyone else watch Get Back to where you Came From?

It was really instructive to watch the young wannabe Reform politician go through so many attempts to suggest the life of people in places such as Syria was not actually that bad. She didn't really mean those people should stay in France or Germany. That just doubts better than what she eventually showed she meant. She didn't think bombed and wounded children should actually ever leave their own country because they weren't nearly dead enough.

He didn’t wait long to reveal who he really is to those who couldn’t or refused to see it

It was never the main group.

The numbers are easy to find.

Plus we got a deal with Albania to return those who weren’t genuine.

The truth is out there if you want to see it.

I'm expecting some outright illegal SEN policies at the very least, in the next few years.

I also expect a few people working at Tesco, Wetherspoons or anywhere else quite ordinary in a role that has nothing to do with DEI will be looking for new roles when their secured bus service gets cancelled in the name of "reducing council waste". Or they can't even drive to work in winter because the new council decides we spend far too much on road gritting or tree maintenance and roads end up impassable after a bit of weather.

I was simply going of gov statistics.

I was pointing out that the assumption that everyone is always from a dangerous country is wrong.

Factsheet: Small boat crossings since July 2022

Yep - they’ll cut SEN support. Clear as day they’ve been angling towards this for months.

eg The number of Educational Psychologists covering my area is down by more than half than there were 10 years ago. More cuts would only heap misery on children.

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 18:01

@Neemie

It's mostly women who are granted asylum

You are not supposed to be nasty to them, apparently. Poor little dabs are very fragile.

I am bloody dreading Senedd elections next year.

I'm dreading the Senedd elections too. I'm now trying to hold on to the hope that the next 12 months will show exactly how useless Reform are.

But Labour, Plaid etc all need to be gathering the evidence from today onwards and make sure they use it appropriately in their election campaigns next year.

And conditions in schools will worsen, people will blame Labour, Reform councils will blame Labour for not giving them enough money (that they would piss away on backhanders to their mates anyway).
People will still die on hospital corridors but it will still be Labour’s fault for allowing immigration and not funding it.
Social care will continue to be run into the ground. Again, that will be Labour’s fault.

BBC leading with some bumf about Prince Harry. Disingenuous fuckers.
