What is unsafe about France, Spain, Germany etc?

I’ve addressed that.
Why do you think they are making the expensive and dangerous crossing if they don’t ‘need’ to?

2dogsandabudgie · 02/05/2025 16:15

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 16:06

Not again, do you really think they are making the crossing for fun rather than out of desperation?

Would you be happy with safe routes?

Yes I would be happy with safe routes.

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 16:16

2dogsandabudgie · 02/05/2025 16:13

I have never said we shouldn't take anyone. But nobody NEEDS to make the journey.
1,162 people have crossed in the last 5 days. That's a lot of people to suddenly find accommodation for.

They do if they want to claim asylum in the UK ffs

What will you Reform council do about housing shortages?

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 16:17

2dogsandabudgie · 02/05/2025 16:15

Yes I would be happy with safe routes.

Me too, they would still need housing.

Thank fuck Reform will now stop them landing at Fleetwood or Lytham St Annes! You can’t play the tuppeny slots in the pier arcade without being distracted by ‘young men of fighting age’ picking their way through the sewage. <tuts>

Why is it OK for those countries, who face all the same economic and social issues as us to take them all then? In fact , I believe they already take a larger proportion. And they aren't necessarily any closer to the originating country anyway.

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 16:19

Runcorn can close the bridge to stop dinghies now

2dogsandabudgie · 02/05/2025 16:19

I think you're jumping the gun, Nigel Farage isn't in No.10 yet.

I do wonder what Reform will do about the pushing through of building on green belt around here? Wave it through and risk the ire of their voters or be buggardly and obstructive because Labour want it?

He stood candidates as MPs, and stood himself. Presumably he has a plan?

But that’s what the voters were voting for in the vast majority of cases. With the caveat that some leopards are cuddly and helpful and would rather arrange litter picks/new play parks than eat faces.

Not sure why you think the boat crossings are something to joke about.

Is your council not responsible for housing and planning applications?

Notonthestairs · 02/05/2025 16:26

Do not hide behind Reform's lack of policies on any issue other than migration.

If they can cobble together a policy there, ask yourself why cant they in other areas?

Good grief.
The state of Conservative voters now.
Meekly taking Farage's talking points and unthinkingly reguritating them.

The reason Tories were known for infighting is because they had many of the big beasts of politics.

Do you seriously think Farage, Tice and Anderson have the same abilities as Clarke, Heseltine, Major or Lawson?
Portillo had greater intellectual heft than the Reform MPs combined.

Even Osborne could discuss a range of policy issues without resorting to soundbites.

You are rolling over.

Saucery · 02/05/2025 16:27

They are not. Neither are they something for cynical shysters to play campaign games with. But here we are…..

If you need it explaining, I was joking about thick, racist twats in Lancashire voting in local elections for a party that ran their entire campaign on Stopping The Boats.

I’ll wait for your apology for saying I called Conservative ‘thick, racist twats’ last year btw. In your own time.

That was to @2dogsandabudgie . Quote post didn’t attach.

I not surprised at all by the swathe of the East Mids going to Reform
Anyone who is has never lived or spent time there.
Even during the miners' strikes Notts miners had a particular set of views that set them apart. The East mids is very white and unintegrated/ monocultural if you remove the cities.

And they like heavy rock and motorbikes.

Arguably, the E Mids has neither a strong Northern or immigrant based or Southern identity.

2dogsandabudgie · 02/05/2025 16:01

They don't need to make the crossing though. They have arrived safely in Europe. They are no more in danger in France, Spain, Germany etc than they are in the UK.

This comes up over and over, but it is a false premise, even if Reform don’t mention this - it is actually set in in U.K. case law, (R v Uxbridge) as well as being part of the refugee convention, that an asylum seeker can go to where they choose/ feel safest and can travel through other countries to get there. They may know people in the U.K., most probably they have some English; many from French as a 2nd language speaking countries stay in France for example.
Most of the millions and millions of worldwide refugees do not come here, many stay near home tbh, and then we have the least of all European countries as well by a good margin. I take it that you accept they want refuge, you say Europe is ‘safe’ for them, but if each country stated safe in previous country in Europe it would trail all the way back to Greece mainly, so is it fair that Greece has all refugees finding safety in Europe? Are you annoyed with Ukrainians being here - Poland is a safe bordering country?
It’s wrong to argue France should have them due to our own law and international law, and it’s unfair to think we shouldn’t do our share - we’ve done our share in making people flee their countries tbh.

If Charles can’t make that William should.
Time to stand by any Commonwealth nation that wants us represented there.

Whoops- hadn’t realised Charles has already committed to go. Well done him.
