I was really cheered by the EU scheme - then I heard a phone in with the most ridiculous bilge from listeners - betraying the popular vote on the EU, encouraging illegal migrants (normally known as asylum seekers) from France, as they must be classed as French citizens while in France so can come on this visa! It was astonishing- no not GB news - LBC with Tom Swarbrick I think, who tried to correct the outlandish statements but I can't believe these were your everyday people calling in - hope not anyway!

In our house LBC is half-jokingly known as Fascist FM.

Yes, scary. Can we call it facsism yet?

It would be incredibly lazy to not even question where behaviour like this was headed or question the thinking.

It will be interesting to read - if we ever see it - the judges version of events.

MsJinks · 26/04/2025 06:51

@PandoraSocks - yes to be fair that's a good description at times - I used to like the range of presenters (some) and to listen to a range of callers - yesterday the misunderstandings of callers who appeared well versed on some matters was shocking. I have started to revert back to Radio 4 Extra more and more - even writing that makes me feel I've morphed into my parents lol, but it saves my blood pressure!

cardibach · 26/04/2025 09:19

Watching the Pope’s funeral. I’m not a believer, less still a Catholic, but I do love a bit of ceremony and the music is good. Trump isn’t wearing a black suit. The result is he stands out from the sea of black worn by people with less narcissism and more decorum. This is making me irrationally angry.

Yes, I often have to turn it off to save my blood pressure!

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/04/2025 09:25

I’m annoyed he’s right at the front and I keep getting views of him as the camera pans round.

I did notice him standing out with the blue suit. I don’t believe he doesn’t have a black one.

What a disrespectful thing to do.

They are happy to restrict opportunities for British youngsters to keep out a few brown people.

Their own kids will be fine, money buys FoM

DuncinToffee · 26/04/2025 09:50

Just turned the tv on, speech on refugees 👏

Ironically probably a higher proportion of those coming to live and work in the UK post Brexit are people of colour than before.

Just finished my Diane Abbott book. She reserves most of her excoriating comment for Labour, tbh - and reflects in a way that will chime with many on the problems Labour has with the working class vote and with tis drift to the centre right. She does still say she would never be in any other party though- se feels there has been a complacency in Labour and a drift from its core vote. The section on Frank Hester and how she was treated at that time is really sad to read. She has actually long been treated quite poorly by the so called 'loony left' as well (not Corbyn who it seems is terminally kind) and it seems ironic she is so often aligned with them ,as they were disinterested in race to the point of verging on racism alarmingly often. Kinnock also comes across poorly.

It's an excellent read no matter how you may view her brand of politics.

Piggywaspushed · 26/04/2025 09:59

There's an interesting comment on Starmer as well (it isn't hers - she is quoting a legal colleague of his). As a barrister he was always exceptional in front of a judge but weaker with a jury. This does make sense.

countrygirl99 · 26/04/2025 10:07

I've got that book on my kindle @piggywaspushed looking forward to reading it.

cardibach · 26/04/2025 10:45

The invocation of the saints is really hypnotic (still on the funeral).

cardibach · 26/04/2025 10:50

Someone on the funeral thread just pointed out this bit of the funeral plan - Trump will love it I’m sure…

After Mass at St Peter's square the coffin will be brought to the Basilica of St Mary Major for burial.
A group of 40 people, including migrants, the incarcerated, homeless people and transgender people, will greet the late Pope Francis with white roses on the steps of the Basilica of St. Mary Major

DuncinToffee · 26/04/2025 10:50

I am reading the funeral thread, some of those posters better not find out why the Dutch royal family isn't attending Grin

The funeral is very diverse

cardibach · 26/04/2025 10:51

It’s interesting that people saying Trump’s royal blue suit is perfectly normal immediately went on to criticise the King for not going as disrespectful…

I love that. I wonder if that was the Pope's own idea?

cardibach · 26/04/2025 12:17

I understand from the BBC coverage that it was, @PandoraSocks
People who used the facilities at a homeless support centre in the area.

This is so interesting. I understand her complaints against the party and yet still saying no other party. As frustrating as Labour can be I still prefer them over LD, Tory or Reform.

I've been busy so missed the funeral. How did this go?

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/04/2025 12:37

You didn’t really see that bit on the coverage. Or if you did I was a bit worried about the pallbearers and didn’t notice.

Bit surprised the funeral thread kicked off in the way it did. Off to Google why the Dutch royal family didn’t go.
