I made a leek and potato pie following a BBC good food recipe and it was rubbish. Too much pastry, not enough filling, dc said it smelt the house out and it just didn’t taste particularly nice. I won’t make it again!

I'm normally a fairly competent cook, but a recent stir fry recipe which included soy sauce and cornflour turned into gloopy stodge recently.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 19/04/2025 19:17

That’s a shame OP it’s horrible when you waste time/money like that isn’t it? Pukka do a lovely individual leek cheese and potato pie to save you the trouble again !

I got excited with the appearance of some sunshine last week and made a fresh salsa (as I often do in the summer). Unfortunately the tomatoes were still very much ‘winter tomatoes’ and tasted of absolutely nothing, so it was a very meh salsa.

Roasted Mediterranean vegetables,chicken and quinoa
it was meh 🫤 and I seasoned it loads

purpleme12 · 19/04/2025 19:31

That I made macaroni cheese from a recipe
I'd never made this recipe before
And it wasn't good ☹️ not very cheesy even though I actually put a fair bit more cheese in than the recipe said
Made me sad actually ☹️

The beef burrito casserole was nearly a total disaster.
Recipe calls for four cups of cooked white rice.

I added a third of a cup more rice and 2/3 cup more water to make exactly 4 cups, which it did.
Rice looked fluffy, but I didn't taste it until after assembly, and only because there was some left on the spoon.
It was a blur as to what I did in my rush to have dinner on the table, but it involved drowning the casserole and a hastily made watered down tomato sauce with extra spices, and checking on it every 15 minutes.
It turned out so good, got lots of compliments, actually better than the original recipe.

I attempted Pad Thai once, probably about 8 years ago. My sons still remind how disgusting it was - think it may have been a Slimming World version 😂

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 19/04/2025 19:39

I made a lentil and bacon soup from a recipe that was just, wrong. It took a while to analyse the 'wrongness' because I had been sure that I would like it. I made it again today, and adjusted it to be remove the wrong bits and it came out really well.

Timeforatincture · 19/04/2025 19:40

My sponges always look awful (but taste ok). The latest actually fell in half. And the lemon curd refused to thicken. So i added some flour. No joy. So I did the thing that you must NEVER do. Chucked it in a pan and applied direct heat. Thickened instantly. So much so that I had to form it into little patties to put in the middle of the sponge. I really should call it quits with sponges.

Dogaredabomb · 19/04/2025 19:43

Both of my children have separately cried at my mashed potato. Tbf I've felt like crying too. I cannot make it.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 19/04/2025 19:46

@Dogaredabomb frozen mashed potato is your saviour, sainsburys is especially good.

shellyleppard · 19/04/2025 19:47

I'm an okay baker, tried making an an orange and almond cake.....it just exploded in the oven!!! The sugar made a crust on top 🤢🤢

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 19/04/2025 19:49

@purpleme12 its best to use Parmesan or equivalent in a macaroni cheese it’s not so fatty either

sorry you were sad 🥲

purpleme12 · 19/04/2025 19:50

I've made it before with cheddar and it was really nice but they were different recipes

MadisonAvenue · 19/04/2025 19:50

Leek and potato soup which turned out like wallpaper paste.

purpleme12 · 19/04/2025 19:50

@NeilDiamondsBlowDry thank you ❤️❤️

FortyNineAndABit · 19/04/2025 19:52

Thai green curry using lots of ingredients which had been in the cupboard for too long. It was pretty grim.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 19/04/2025 19:52

@purpleme12 Tom kerridge has a recipe for a FIVE cheese one !! includes comte must cost so much in cheese ingredients, Parmesan reaaly does elevate it though as not so much cheddar needed, I always get mine ready made the co op ones are really good but they are individual size

HowManyDucks · 19/04/2025 19:52

These are all nearly dinners ... 😅

Ihitthetarget · 19/04/2025 19:53

I tried to make flap Jack's healthier by reducing the amount of syrup. It tasted like hard, cold porridge 😐

SparklyBrickViper · 19/04/2025 19:53

I made banana bread (which I’ve made countless times), but this was a loaf of play dough textured gloop.

Vile.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 19/04/2025 19:54

@FortyNineAndABit at least your cupboard has had a clear out 😀

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 19/04/2025 19:56

I am a reasonably competent baker. Today I made chocolate cornflake cakes - easiest thing in the world right? The chocolate to cornflake ratio was completely wrong. They look ridiculous but I’m still gonna eat them out of spite.

Runmybathforme · 19/04/2025 19:57

Made a lemon drizzle, which I’ve done loads of times. Tried a new recipe, all went well. Timer went off, skewer came out clean, all good. Left it to cool in the tin for a bit, went to turn it out and the whole thing collapsed, uncooked cake mix all over the place, only the ends survived, which actually tasted lovely. No clue why that happened at all.

Arancia · 19/04/2025 19:59

Salade chevre chaud. There was just something about the vinaigrette that wasn't right. And I'd chosen a wrong cheese that was too pungent in flavour.
