What have you cooked recently which didn’t turn out very well?

I made a leek and potato pie following a BBC good food recipe and it was rubbish. Too much pastry, not enough filling, dc said it smelt the house out and it just didn’t taste particularly nice. I won’t make it again!

Any time I attempt soup. I think I have anti-soup genes. Follow recipes in forensic detail, but it still turns out like runny slop. I’m good at other stuff, but soup defeats me.

It's special when your children cry at your cooking isn't it.

Well it certainly makes memories 😆

CyclingAddict · 19/04/2025 22:34

had friends round for a Beef Bourguignon but slow cooked it on a gas ring instead of in the oven or in the slow cooker and it was awful. One friend asked what I’d done with the other leather boot 😂😂

@Happyinarcon I am making an apple crumble tomorrow and dc has just reminded me of the last one I made which was all clumpy and dry. I also have a new oven!

I didn’t realize apple crumble could be so finicky, shame cause I love it

Enchiladas. We have these fairly regularly, but Asda substituted the normal tortillas for some which just stuck to the dish and I thought I had chicken breast in the freezer when it was thighs. Just didn’t work at all and was very disappointing!

TwinklyNight · 20/04/2025 01:44

Chicken rollatini, it was delicious but too rich. We have about 10 leftovers frozen now. Roast beef. I decided to crock pot it and it had a weird texture. Dh made it into stew the next day.

SingleAHF · 20/04/2025 01:55

Slow roasted lamb. Normally I would put it on a high heat, but I thought it would come out juicy in tender if done for longer but at a lower heat. Big mistake even though I wrapped it up in foil, it came out a blackened and dried up lump. Luckily it was just about edible. Never again. Next time I am going to do it in the slow cooker in liquid

Jsidken · 20/04/2025 02:02

A Thai pineapple rice dish. From the ingredients list it sounded delicious, but it was awful, none of the flavours went together. I love Thai food but this was not good at all.

monktasmic · 20/04/2025 02:16

I cannot cook eggs. Any type of egg. Scrambled eggs, fried, dippy. None

coxesorangepippin · 20/04/2025 02:52

' several tablespoons of paprika'

I mean, come on!!

ScottBakula · 20/04/2025 10:54

Yesterday, I roasted two chicken breast, one with hot sauce and red onions the other with lemon juice and spring onions.
Both are dry and tastless but I am going to have to eat them for work lunch with salad as planed as because I have no where to heat my lunches this week.

Shoxfordian · 20/04/2025 11:19

Fondant potatoes that I cooked as it said but were still hard

Marshtit · 20/04/2025 11:21

beef stroganoff,
it was expensive too
i must have overcooked the beef

RainySummer01 · 20/04/2025 11:30

It’s disappointing when you go to a lot of effort and you are looking forward to a nice meal. Happens to me too often!

I just cannot make flapjacks. My neighbour makes great ones and gave me her recipe but they were still not right.
The Guac I made on Friday night (which is usually excellent) wasn't great, no idea why.

DaveWatts · 20/04/2025 11:36

Chicken and orzo in the oven - the orzo turned into a flavourless solid lump.
And venison stew that smelled like urine, had to bin the lot. Shame as it looked amazing and I spent ages on it. That one wasn't my fault though, think it had just been hung for a long time 🤢
Giving up on cooking meat now, I was veggie for a long time and I just don't have the instincts for it. I'm a very good cook most of the time!

Purplesphere11 · 20/04/2025 11:41

If you want to see food done badly go into YouTube and type in kays cooking. So addictive to watch. How can anyone make every meal a complete disaster every time. That's some skill

Cutecattoes · 20/04/2025 11:47

I just can't seem to do a decent curry. It always comes out tasting really bitter.
That now I've given up and just use jar sauces. Would love to be able to knock up a decent chicken tikka masala

minipie · 20/04/2025 11:58

I didn’t cook for 2 weeks for various reasons and everything since then has gone a bit wrong.

tomato mozzarella pasta bake - dried out the sauce
hazelnut and nutella cake - just meh
croutons - bit burnt

I remember trying to make a Roasting Tin recipe for a puff pastry based quiche, it was absolutely terrible, vast amounts of broccoli which was never going to be covered by or cook in the same time as the egg mixture. And the pastry unsurprisingly didn’t cook either. Never trusted her recipes since.

DH is cooking Easter dinner today, at least it it goes wrong it’s not my fault…

cutecattoes I recommend the butter chicken recipe on RecipeTinEats, it’s very easy! There’s a longer version with boneless chicken that needs marinating and a short “dump and bake” version with bone in thighs.

Whambamfam · 20/04/2025 12:03

Homily pie..the recipe stated cream..halfway through cooking realised I didn't have any. Substituted for whole milk...its slop 😭😭😭

Both of my children have separately cried at my mashed potato. Tbf I've felt like crying too. I cannot make it.

Look at Lakeland they do a gadget called masha that does it perfect every time

I turned to frozen mash as soon as they invented it.

piefacedClique · 20/04/2025 13:00

Recipietineats is fantastic in all fairness…. Her popcorn chicken is unreal! Her recipes are pretty foolproof x

Gliblet · 20/04/2025 13:08

I put a malted cinnamon cake in to bake in a loose bottomed tin once and the whole lot liquefied, oozed out of the bottom of the tin, and cemented itself to the oven floor.

Still wasn't as annoying as the time I spent ages boiling a chicken carcass, then reducing the resulting stock, then deglazing the roasting pan and adding that to the stockpot before putting the (carefully muslin lined) colander in the sink and pouring all the stock down the drain leaving me with a colander full of bones and vegetable sludge.
