Signs of middle age

Devastated999 · 19/04/2025 06:49

After many years of feeling that I was an imposter as an adult, I have suddenly jumped to feeling decidedly middle aged (and very happy being so).

The reason being, my sudden overwhelming obsession with gardening. I am spending all my free time either in the garden, or researching plants, watching gardening programmes and spending all my spare money on plants (even though I have run out of space for them).

I know that gardening is for anyone of any age, but for me it reminds me of my garden obsessed parents, therefore a middle-age hobby (for me).

What made you feel/accept the you were middle-aged?

OP posts:

Realising people who are experts in their fields are in their thirties or sometimes younger. And thinking like look so young!

Ellinor · 19/04/2025 06:52

I prefer spending time with my cats.

LadyMinerva · 19/04/2025 07:00

I hear you OP. My garden is my sanctuary. When anyone asks what my weekend plans are its all about the garden. And it's said with the enthusiasm i used to have about going to the latest clubs!

Mumof1andacat · 19/04/2025 07:12

I must have been middle age all my life then. Always prefered the company of cats and animals in general. Only went to clubs as that's were my friends went. Would of liked a quiet pub for a drink.

Buying comfy underwear from M&S
Needing glasses for driving

pearbottomjeans · 19/04/2025 07:18

I’m 35 so hopefully not middle aged yet (I’m aiming for at least 80!) but whenever I see people on telly who are 30-40 I think wow, that’s a real grown up, so mature! And then I realise, that’s me and DH!

Also having a 10 year old. How the fuck did that happen? I’m 18!

RabbitsRock · 19/04/2025 07:18

I think it was when I started to actually choose to go to garden centres & DIY places & enjoy looking round, making plans. My best friend & I once quipped that we knew we were getting older because the first thing we did at a concert venue was check where the fire exits were!

Snarf23 · 19/04/2025 07:22

Love being home under my blanket
Gatdening. Couldn’t of give a shit 20 years ago.
Not wanting to go out out, prefer a couple of drinks with a meal late afternoon type of thing.
Cant really drink much alcohol anymore either:

BigDahliaFan · 19/04/2025 07:26

I’ve always loved gardening, NT places and tea shops.

but starting being interested in garden birds, I’m obsessed with the group of starlings in our shed, the Bath times of the blackbird and how many goldfinches are on the flowering cherry….

winetimenow · 19/04/2025 09:13

Suddenly finding clothes from m&s quite stylish

Asking my husband to turn down the music because it's giving me a head ache
(Wanting to question whether what is being played is in fact music)

TaupeMember · 19/04/2025 09:16

Being careful getting out of the bath

I find that as well, sometimes rear back a bit at the ages of politicians and doctors

Intense agitation at my teenagers playing their music.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/04/2025 10:44

Well I’m just beyond middle age I guess at 63 - but for me it was when I realised a great Saturday night was making a lovely meal using my simply cook kit - followed by a bath, something on Netflix and a shared bottle of wine

Favouritefruits · 19/04/2025 10:45

I’d rather spend the day in the garden pottering about with the cats than going out with humans

HeatedBlanketAllYear · 19/04/2025 11:00

For me it was a few years ago when I was in a club at 1am and realised I hated it. I’m always the first to leave a night out now and I’d much rather go out in the afternoon and be home in bed before 10pm, not drunk and able to have a good nights sleep.
That may be middle age or just realising that I’m going to do what works for me instead of going along with the crowd.

DancingLions · 19/04/2025 11:14

I always have to get my glasses out now to read a menu in a restaurant.
Moaning about my aches and pains and making noises when I get up from a low position.
Also gardening for me and if someone plays music in their garden I feel annoyed, as I’d rather listen to the birds.

That said, I like this phase of my life. It’s comes with many plus points. I enjoyed my youth but have no desire to relive it.

ParsnipPuree · 19/04/2025 11:20

The Chelsea Flower show being the highlight of my year!

unsync · 19/04/2025 11:46

Making that grunty/groany noise whenever I sit down or stand up.

TenaReef · 19/04/2025 11:48

Making that grunty/groany noise whenever I sit down or stand up. This is what I was going to say.

soccermum10 · 19/04/2025 11:53

I prefer to be at home, snuggled under a throw and watching a movie than going out lol I also love visiting garden centres and DIY shops and enjoy pottering around the house. I love just sitting in my garden on my bistro table and chairs with a cup of coffee and some music on 🙂

Ilovemyshed · 19/04/2025 11:59

Looking at people in authority and thinking they are a bit young!
Not caring what people think of you so much
Being the squeezed middle carers for both young and old
Hips and knees hurt
Starting to take a serious interest in the value of pension fund
Liking to do the garden

Llamo · 19/04/2025 11:59

I always loved music on in the car, singing at the top of my lungs. I haven't had the radio on much in the past 5 years when driving (since the DC came along) but was out on my own recently so switched it on and thought to myself, 'WTF is this, it's just noise'. I could hear my Granny in myself lol.

frozendaisy · 19/04/2025 12:04

We’ve accepted for a while football players look like they are just out of college, but when you look at football managers and think “gosh he’s young” you know it’s all over!

Bonjovispyjamas · 19/04/2025 12:04

I've started saying "when I was a kid..." 😬 and an evening watching my favourite programmes while cuddling the cat is my favourite kind of evening.
