What does your half term look like?

Because I’m nosy!

here we’ve had a few park days, softplay, seeing nanny and friends and cousins but today is our first stay at home / garden day just us. I’ve got a 5,3 and 1 year old so they are please with park / picnic days and the weathers been the best for it!

what’s your half term like?

I've got teens, one I'm paying to do revision, the other I'm paying to clean the kitchen. Money well spent!
I'm completing lots of coursework, 5000-6000 words, to upskill for my job (TA-HLTA no big wage increase sadly).

It's been very useful to see that I can still study, work and cope with teen exam stress family life.

We've been to the seaside, had a spa day at home that's about it. Hence having the money to pay the teens!

Please stop calling it half term!
Even our local holiday club has done it this year. "Book your children in for half term camp" etc
Makes no sense!

I really don't know ever this has come from! Calling the main holidays half term, came out of nowhere, just three or four years ago. And yes, even local clubs on Facebook have been calling the Easter holidays half term, this year.

I'm not really blaming you, @BumpLoading because it's becoming ubiquitous, and it's quite bizarre because it makes no sense at all.

It's weird how something completely wrong can suddenly spring up all over the country, for no apparent reason.

TRexHamster · 16/04/2025 22:36

Not a huge amount this time - we are completely broke with all incomings going straight out atm so no extras for day trips. Lots of dog walks, a couple of walks into town to mooch but not buy (tough with a teen who is always hungry!) and a couple of friend meet ups in various parks and homes for sleep overs.

Sickness, sickness, and more sickness 😫

It really doesn't matter. It's obvious what they mean.

It kind of does, because its growth can cause a lot of confusion. Someone saying that something is happening at half term when it turns out they meant the Easter (or Christmas) holiday can be really confusing.

While not affording anyone personal blame, I'm still holding out for calling the holidays the correct and logical names!

Halfterm started on Monday here and ends this Friday, a quiet one so far, we’re both working as normal so we can have more time off in the summer holidays, we’re part time so that makes things a bit easier. I took the kids to a forest school activity day today, tomorrow my husbands dropping one off at a dance camp for the day and taking the other to a farm park.

Broke up Friday just as it got cold. Ds is away sailing. DD is stropping because it's deeply unreasonable to be expected to study for her GCSEs when she's on holiday. I'm working so avoiding most of it.

DH is on leave and I've left him a list of jobs but he's knackered his knee so he's mostly sitting down, gaming and reading.

cadburyegg · 16/04/2025 23:48

We were away on holiday last week, got super lucky with the weather. Other than that we’ve done an Easter egg hunt at a NT property, seen the Minecraft movie, and been to a birthday party. So pretty busy. The kids are at their dad’s now until Friday and I’m working all week. This weekend I think we are going to my mum’s for Easter lunch and seeing friends.

Tumbleweed101 · 17/04/2025 00:04

I've been working most of the Easter holidays but today I took my 15yo to Edinburgh for the day to let her experience a plane ride and for the easter weekend we are visiting family in London.

DrCoconut · 17/04/2025 00:39

@BeaAndBen it seems to have crept in in the last few years.Definitely was only half term in October, February and May.

I was thinking the exact same! I’m not sure why it enrages me 😂

It’s the insidious erasure of our Christian cultural heritage (whether you’re religious or not).

Christmas holidays becoming “winter break” and Easter becoming “spring break” or “half term”.

Fight it as every instance! 👊🏻

I think the op gets the point now about holidays/ half term - don't think she needs 40 more comments taking up the thread about it

Don't be ridiculous

Scaredworriedandalone · 17/04/2025 07:20

It’s our last day of school today so they’ve getting themselves ready while I sit and procrastinate making the list of “things I desperately need for the weekend” that I need to get today Grin

We’re doing a national trust place tomorrow and have a trampoline park with friends booked in next week as well as a cinema trip. But as we’ve only got a week off and everyone else will be back at school, we’ll probably just take advantage of the time to actually chill.

tappingatthewindow · 17/04/2025 07:24

I have a four year old and a twenty month old.

We have

done a tots pony riding session
seen grandparents (they live quite a long way away so it’s a bit of a treat)
Been to a music and dancing event twice
done an Easter egg hunt
visited the library
been to the farm to feed lambs and hold chicks
been to the park, fed ducks and seen the first ducklings
had friends over for lunch and to play
been to an outdoor playgroup
soft play
visited a castle

So it has been quite nice. We’re going on holiday tomorrow which is good as I think we’ve exhausted stuff closer to home really.

Rubbish. Zero money. Ridiculous with 2 working parents who rent and don't even own a house. This country is a joke.
