Because I’m nosy!

here we’ve had a few park days, softplay, seeing nanny and friends and cousins but today is our first stay at home / garden day just us. I’ve got a 5,3 and 1 year old so they are please with park / picnic days and the weathers been the best for it!

what’s your half term like?

Mine go back on Monday. Other than a bug that wiped us all out for five days, we’ve had a good time. Beaches, river, park, picnic, s’mores over the fire, bbq. It’s been ace weather. Swimming still to come and Minecraft movie.

indecisivewoman81 · 11/04/2025 17:18

Mine are teens so hardly want to do anything but we have had a cinema trip, a bowling trip and an afternoon out at a lovely country park. That's about it and we have 2 weeks off

MockTheGeek · 11/04/2025 17:20

Working. Working late. Working more. Working with the kids at work with me. Working in the evening. Working until the early hours. Listening to kids complain they are bored and don’t want to go to work. But having to go to work.

Half term was in February. It's the Easter holidays.

I was thinking the exact same! I’m not sure why it enrages me 😂

Stripytablecloth · 11/04/2025 18:14

Jgilg · 11/04/2025 17:11

No, actually the half term is the 6-7 weeks of the school term. The gap between that and the next half is the break or holiday.

I think it’s clear that when people say half term, they mean the half term holiday. Which is completely correct. Except not now of course, as this is the Easter holiday!

I know you think it's clear but actually there is lots of debate on here about half term / Easter hols / oh it's not even Easter yet and we'll be back before then...

School term times are the terms and half terms. Autumn half term 1 and HT 2 make up the autumn term (Sept - Oct / Nov - Dec) etc. The days off are holidays.

Endless. I don’t care what you call it - it’s looking endless. I’ve got one more week to go out of five weeks with DC (different schools) on holiday. 4 weeks reprieve and then eldest is on study leave for A levels. Send wine.

Thank you!!!! Omg I swear everyone calls it half term. It’s end of term. Even a teacher I know is calling it half term! It’s like they aren’t thinking what they’re actually saying…

Lookingforwardto2025 · 11/04/2025 18:26

In Wales so the Easter holidays began today for us with an inset day. We went to the zoo and had a lovely day in the sunshine :)

Clearly. Half term lasts for half a school term. If you're going to be pedantic about what you want the holidays calling, you should at least be right.

No idea what you think I’ve got wrong. When people say “it’s half term” they mean it’s the half term holiday. Half term holidays come half way through one of the 3 school terms.
this is the Easter holidays.

Oh no, I thought you were leaving it at Jesus/Jeez...

Maybe they do mean that. But the mistake you're calling out (saying it's 'half term' when it's 'Christmas' or 'Easter') is no worse than your own mistake.

It's not just you, because it's become very common, but so is what you don't like (calling them all 'half term').

For avoidance of doubt, schools operate on a TERMly basis. You can work there on a TERM time only contract. There are three TERMS. They are each split into two. There are, in fact, six HALF TERMS. Half term 1 and half term 2 make up the autumn term, half terms 3 and 4 make up the spring and 5 and 6 make up the summer. They average 6 or 7 weeks each to span the 190 school days.

The rest are holidays.

'Half term' is a shortened version of half term holiday in your case and misleading, because the half term / term is when school is open and in session. The ellipsis is on the noun, like when someone says they're going to 'disney' or out for a 'kentucky'.

Seen it all now. So people aren’t allowed to call a holiday which falls in the middle of a term - half term? Because it’s misleading? Rightio…

WhineAndWine1 · 11/04/2025 19:08

The amount of frothing that’s going on about what it is called is pathetic! You all know exactly what holiday the op is talking about. We have a family wedding and then over to NY for 5 days. Very excited here!

You're the one who said only certain holidays can have this name, because it has to be accurate...!

DD and I have been to a local farm park on Tuesday. The rest of the week we have been home renovating. DS1 and DD have helped with painting the dining room, I've painted kitchen cupboards.

DC have mostly been in their rooms tbh. Tomorrow DD has riding, then we're going shopping for wallpapering supplies for dining room and stick on floor tiles for kitchen. DH and DS1 will be painting the woodwork in the kitchen - the skirts and doors etc are all orange pine. Vile.

Next week will probably see us painting the living room, and DS1's room. I have to do some work ready for next term (teacher), then it'll be Easter before we know it. It always goes far too quickly!

In between work and house stuff next week, will be dog walks/Easter trails at NT or EH properties (memberships), possibly a cinema trip.

DCs are all tweens/teens so hard to drag out tbh.

AJT43 · 11/04/2025 19:38

Ooh if you really want to know I’ll tell you.

2 DC, DS5 and DD1

Monday we went on a canal walk, fed the ducks then played in the garden

Tuesday we went for breakfast and to the library, had an important hospital appointment for my son in the evening

Wednesday the kids had their dentist appointment, went for lunch and shopping afterwards, then played in the garden all afternoon

Thursday I went for a failed smear test as my cervix has gone AWOL, I picked up a chippy lunch on the way home and we played outside making potions and crafting until it went dark, it was lovely 🥰

Today my aunt took us for breakfast, did some shopping and you guessed it; we played in the bloody garden 🤣

I have dealt with endless autistic meltdowns from my boy who hates not being busy and is missing school!

Next week we have a farm trip planned and another appointment for my son and no other plans as of yet.

The best part of my week hands down has been the washing drying outside every day!!! Glorious xxx

BumpLoading · 12/04/2025 09:20

This has turned out to be a very educational thread 😆

I’m stealing some of these ideas for next week when we have less planned! And remembering the idea of a day trip to France for a future schools hols / half term / Easter hols / summer break / Christmas hols 😂

What does your half term look like?
azafata2 · 16/04/2025 21:10

Teacher here. It NOT half term. It is Easter holidays. Half term is a week in October, a week in February and a week in May/June where ever the May Bank Holiday Falls. Stop calling it half term. It is Easter Holiday, Christmas Holiday and Summer Holiday. Thank you.

DazedAndConfused321 · 16/04/2025 21:55

We call it half term too hahaha

Lots of soft play, farm shop visits and play dates. We have 5 kids so half terms(!) are usually the time when our house is filled with various friends.

So far no tantrums or kicking off and so far this week I've only eaten about 3 packs of mini eggs while hiding in the laundry room to get a minute's peace.

It really doesn't matter. It's obvious what they mean.
