Tap Water, at home do you drink it, or have bottled?

Ours tastes a bit chloriney and not nice.
Am thinking to either :

get a water filter...would this help?
Or just drink bottled water

What do you drink?

We just drink the tap water. You get used to the taste of where you are after a while and then everywhere else tastes a bit weird!

To bust a few myths:

  • If you are in a hard water area, your old lead pipes will likely be scaled up so water supply will not be contaminated
  • a standard water filter will remove the chlorine taste but not reduce hardness. You need a water softener for that
  • chlorine is added to stop bacterial growth so tap water is better than bottled if its been sitting around, particularly if unrefrigerated
  • hard water is a natural consequence of the geology in your area and there's evidence that hard water has health benefits so don't worry about it

I buy bottled spring water. It does taste better and spring water has life preserving qualities. I don't drink tea or coffee so water is my main source of drink so I might as well drink the good stuff.

lol. what adverts have you been sucked in by?
I guess all water has life preserving qualities though

We drink tap water but luckily live in an area with good tap water. When I lived in a big city I used to have a water filter jug in the fridge and that did help

ChorusOfDisapproval · 06/04/2025 19:15

If your water smells of chlorine, pour a glass and leave it for 10 minutes. The chlorine will evaporate.

Jk987 · 06/04/2025 19:16

Imagine the plastic if everyone only drank bottled water

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 06/04/2025 19:20

Water filter then drink it. Use filtered in kettle, coffee machine etc too

merrymelodies · 06/04/2025 19:25

We use a Brita filter as our water sometimes smells of chlorine and is very hard. I avoid using plastic as much as possible because of its effects on the environment.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 06/04/2025 19:28

We have a Bibo machine. Filtered, uv treated, hot and chilled water on tap.

Drink tap water if it's tasteless. Some tap water has a strong chlorine smell and taste which is off putting.

If you leave it in a jug the chlorine evaporates. Then you can keep it in the fridge.

For all the people crying about plastic bottles, I buy Aqua Life spring water from Aldi. It clearly says on the bottle the bottle is made from 100% recycled plastic. I then put empty bottle in the recycling bin for collection.

LemograssLollipop · 06/04/2025 20:06

Drink it. I'm in the north west, tap water all the way. It's soft too. Lovely

MargaretThursday · 06/04/2025 20:30

We have a plumbed in fridge, which includes a filter, which we love.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 06/04/2025 20:34

Drink it, own it, Scotland.

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/04/2025 20:40

Tap water at home. It's hard water but it's what I have grown up with.

I worked in the water industry for 10 years.

CoastalCalm · 06/04/2025 20:41

Drink up here in Northumberland but when I lived in South I used a water filter

I live in Scotland. Best tap water in the world.

Me too. In the north. Fresh right off the Ben. Glorious stuff.

Plastic can only be recycled so many times, plus the cost of actually recycling, fuel etc;

Funnywonder · 06/04/2025 20:48

Our tap water doesn’t taste great but we just use one of those jug filters and it makes a huge difference.

MinkyWales · 06/04/2025 20:56

Tap water here. I occasionally buy San Pellegrino because I like the taste. I wouldn't pay for the equivalent of tap water, though.

TheChosenTwo · 06/04/2025 21:11

Never buy bottled water, we have hard water and I love it. It does come through the fridge which has an inbuilt filter but I like it because it’s always very cold.
I’d drink it straight out of the tap too.
hate drinking soft water elsewhere, it tastes really sweet and soapy to me!

SummerIce · 06/04/2025 12:50

We have bottled water. We live in a hard water area and have lead pipes. We plan to change the pipes and install a filter when we redo the kitchen but until then, it’s bottled.

Probably don't need to worry about the lead in a hard water area unless it's sitting in a lead tank in the roof.

weareallalittlebitthesame · 06/04/2025 22:12

We buy flavoured water sometimes but we drink the tap water from both downstairs and upstairs even though my mum told me you couldn’t drink the water from the bathroom tap growing up 🤷‍♀️

MrsMitford3 · 06/04/2025 22:14

Drink it. So lovely
