Tap Water, at home do you drink it, or have bottled?

Ours tastes a bit chloriney and not nice.
Am thinking to either :

get a water filter...would this help?
Or just drink bottled water

What do you drink?

I drink it and filter for the kettle otherwise it gets scale.

East London

Berlinlover · 06/04/2025 14:31

I always drank tap water but when I started chemo last year I started buying bottled water.

minnienono · 06/04/2025 14:31

Have a filter in my fridge, perfect water every time. Have a jug for the kettle

RampantIvy · 06/04/2025 14:32

It seems like the staunch bottled water drinkers can't be bothered to try the extremely simple solution of leaving the water for the chlorine to dissipate.

Maybe they should increase tax on bottled water.

EffortlesslyDecluttering · 06/04/2025 14:33

Tap, ours is hard, chalky and delicious. I don't like drinking it in soft water areas (sorry Scotland!) as it doesn't taste of anything and doesn't quench my thirst.

aintnospringchicken · 06/04/2025 14:35

I’m in Scotland and always drink tap water at home.

GlobalCitz · 06/04/2025 14:44

I live in Scotland - bottled water would be a downgrade.

When we lived in Sydney, we had a Brita jar in the fridge though.

TomatoSandwiches · 06/04/2025 14:48

What kind of filters are being used because we stayed at a house that used softeners about 10 yrs ago. Resulted in no limescale, but the system had a box you had to pop white tablets in, and I couldn't drink the tap water in that house.

The best tap water I've ever had was in a holiday cottage in Derby.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 06/04/2025 14:58

Ours tastes and smells of chlorine so I fill a bottle and let it chill in the fridge. This allows to smell to go off and then I am happy to drink it. I used to filter but it started to get expensive so now I've stopped bothering.

I use a Brita water filter as our water (Wessex water south coast) tastes gag. We have a Quooker tap which has a filter which makes tea taste nice. Best tasting water from a tap I have ever had was when we lived just north of Swindon.

Loveduppenguin · 06/04/2025 15:04

From the tap, but then again, I’m in Ireland and we have our own well. It’s so good!

FatLarrysBanned · 06/04/2025 15:07

Drink it - South Devon. Have a soda stream when I fancy fizzy.

Oldraver · 06/04/2025 17:03

I drink it though downstairs we have a filter. Can't be bothered if I'm upstairs it comes straight from the tap

downdizzy · 06/04/2025 17:57

We drink bottled water, and also boil bottled water for tea, in our previous house the plumbing had been done incorrectly and we had been drinking the tap water that had been backwashed back out the boiler 🤢 ruined tap water forever for me now

Iloveeverycat · 06/04/2025 18:00

Always tap never drink bottled water

YogaLite · 06/04/2025 18:02

I boil, cool then drink it. Only very very rarely from the tap.

BreadInCaptivity · 06/04/2025 18:04

We have a large fridge/freezer that has a water filter and dispenser at the front.

We use that for drinking water as our water is very hard.

Prior to this I used water filter jugs you fill with tap water and store in the fridge.

Have a soda stream to make fizzy water.

Don’t use bottled water for environmental reasons.

Echobelly · 06/04/2025 18:07

Tap water, it's not great but it's good enough.

I remain a bit puzzled about how many people I see buying trolleys-full of water when we have taps and our water is drinkable in London. DH did ask someone in Costco once why they were buying a tonne of water - in their case they lived in a bedsit and the water pipes in their place weren't good and made water taste bad, but I don't think most people are buying water because of that. It seems like an unnecessary expense to me.🤔

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/04/2025 18:11

Drink it but only after it's been filtered. I take the filter jug on holiday in the UK as well as different water can upset my stomach.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 06/04/2025 18:17

Stichintime · 06/04/2025 12:49

Drink it. I find people who buy bottled water to have at home often come from countries where tap water is not considered safe. I have one friend who actually fills the kettle with bottled water. I think that's bonkers, but it's totally ingrained in her.

Weird conclusion to come to just because you know one person.

I was born in the UK have lived in various places around the world and various places in the UK.

I now live in the south east & the tapwater here is horrible! I've tried various filters I even have a built-in filter, but it's still not drinkable (as far as I'm concerned) I drink mostly water, with the odd coffee, I don't drink fizzy drinks or cordial squash or fruit juices, et cetera,

Highland Spring does a 10 L carton with a bladder inside. I decant the bladder into my fridge (the 10 L carton won't fit) which yes is still plastic, but far less than the bottles.

Topseyt123 · 06/04/2025 12:50

Very much agree. Tap water is fine in the UK unless told otherwise by your water company if they have a problem.

It's not the same everywhere.

Gundogday · 06/04/2025 18:19

Drink tap water. Having been brought up in a hard water area, much prefer it to soft water.
