King Donald has bigly new tariffs, First Lady Elmo turns out to be ballot box poison and 'Pick Me Girl' Vance is a meanie to the EU.

(But at least the penguins on the Heard and McDonald Islands are wearing suits)

Lots of chat on bluesky that Trump's arranging a military parade for June 14, his birthday.

Pleased to see that they've found a place to put the DOGE waste, fraud and abuse savings.

You are right

Just want to get my hunch on record. If it looks like he'll lose the House and Senate in the midterms he'll find a way to postpone or cancel the elections.

Hope I'm wrong.

Deafnotdumb · 07/04/2025 22:21

I hope you are on this issue, too @Eyesopenwideawake

Has the US ever cancelled elections and if so, why?

He's already declared a National Emergency so he could crash the economy
Introduce his tariffs

Deafnotdumb · 07/04/2025 22:29

The good news is that it's the States who run elections, so Trump would need to intimidate, bribe or find a legal process to stop all of them.

The bad news is that he could use martial law and/or voter suppression to engineer the result.

Has anyone had a text from Pete Hesgeth to confirm any bombings?

Edited

No, but I think he just butt dialled me. All I could hear was him yelling, But I thought they said NO tariffs on vodka!

I suspect this might not work if not on Twitter but I can’t find it anywhere else. Inevitable Downfall tariff parody.

So Iran have denied Trump’s claims that direct talks are going on between the US and Iran. They’ve said that smaller indirect talks are taking place on Saturday but that “the ball is in America’s court”. So Trump was lying exaggerating, I’m so shocked….

The article contains the type of whingeing you'd expect from a person whose pre-frontal cortex is still developing.

I love the comments. Very amusing. I had also somehow missed that he'd made up an expert using an anagram of his own name.

Only the best people in this administration.

Ok, I need to get more work done today than yesterday. Hope Trump and co can manage not to distract me today by setting the world order on fire, or making it bigger.

Terrible outcome at the Supreme Court last night, by the way.

I missed the Supreme Court, what happened?

Yes, no problem because most Venezuelans in this category have a high powered lawyer on speed dial. At this point, it will be impossible for many of them to get legal representation. They also have to file in Texas, because the administration is holding them there, probably largely because the courts are likely to be very unsympathetic to their cases.

It's a small bump in the road for the administration, but is a very bad decision, and it's Roberts declining to challenge the administration.

Eyesopenwideawake · 08/04/2025 11:30

They are not being held in Texas or anywhere;

The court said Venezuelans they seek to deport must have adequate notice in order to be able to challenge their removal — confronting the administration’s removal of men without giving them the ability to contest their alleged gang ties.
“AEA detainees must receive notice after the date of this order that they are subject to removal under the Act. The notice must be afforded within a reasonable time and in such a manner as will allow them to actually seek habeas relief in the proper venue before such removal occurs,” the court wrote in a per curium order, adding that the decision “confirm[s] that the detainees subject to removal orders under the AEA are entitled to notice and an opportunity to challenge their removal.”

They have to be given notice that they are being subject to removal under the Act.

On an entirely inappropriate lighthearted note, everyone knew the Spanish Inquisition was coming, as they had to give 30 days notice.

Spandauer · 08/04/2025 11:33

Trump is also talking about/looking at sending home-grown incarcerated US citizens to El Salvador as well, I believe. I wonder how John Roberts will square that circle? (Will jay-walking suddenly become a terrorist offence?)

Immigrationlawyers said that, late Friday, they noticed Venezuelans who otherwise couldn't be deported under immigration law being moved to Texas for deportation flights. They began to file lawsuits to halt the transfers.

Not a coincidence.

Igotjelly · 08/04/2025 12:38

Interesting to see Joe Rogan questioning the Trump administration’s decision to deport people to El Salvadorian prisons without due process and highlighting the case of the gay make up artist and labelling that “mistake” as horrific.

It shouldn’t be the case but people like Rogan carry far more weight with many Trump voters than the mainstream media and courts. He represents the people that could really impact his MAGA support and sway the midterms. Things like this matter.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/04/2025 13:53

An immigration lawyer was on Rachel last night and seemed to indicate that the result of the SCOTUS decision was, I guess, 'mixed, but still not good'. Whilst he would have preferred them to rule that deportation under the AEA was illegal 'in toto', at least it was ruled that the individual must be given advance notice of the revocation of legal status AND must be given due process of law. The downside is that legal proceedings will be at the place of detention, not the place of residence. This was the reason they were moved to TX, where judges aren't going to be sympathetic.

I was surprised that Coney Barrett dissented.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/04/2025 14:46

Also, looking at it from El Salvador’s perspective, becoming known as the US’s prison is horrible. They were already locking up as many of their own people as they could, and tied their economy to USD and Bitcoin FFS. They have done what Ben told them not to. "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." My Salvadoran friend is horrified. She jokes that now is the time for white people to visit because it’s ‘safe’ for them to be tourists now. Because the totalitarian government has everyone in line.
