King Donald has bigly new tariffs, First Lady Elmo turns out to be ballot box poison and 'Pick Me Girl' Vance is a meanie to the EU.

(But at least the penguins on the Heard and McDonald Islands are wearing suits)

Elon Musk is posting videos of Milton Freedman explaining the benefits of free trade.

BLOOMBERG: The sell off following Trump's tariffs announcement has wiped $9.5tn in value from global stock markets so far.

Wallaw · 07/04/2025 12:19

The Republicans need to (wo)man the fuck up.

SerendipityJane · 07/04/2025 12:25

Divine providence. The only gain is Fartcoin.

You really could not make this shit up.

Toilet block on the beach?

"Trump Toilets" has a ring to it, no?

Just looking at the 1pm market figures. Assuming this stabilises at some point, will any foreign investors ever trust USA as a safe place for investments ever again? And their home grown pension holders? Have individuals realised what's happening to them yet? Insanity.

Aren't most UK pensions invested in the same markets? I don't know enough about it, but presumably they must be?

And the answer to your first question is probably not. No. Sigh.

Serpentstooth · 07/04/2025 13:16

I expect so. I'm just expecting a sense of betrayal to exist in US investors, not so keenly felt elsewhere? Maybe not.

Ah, yes. I don't know. We're US investors and I guess we just assumed if he did what he said he was going to, he'd tank the economy, although not to this extent.

Some of his very wealthy vocal backers Bill Ackman, Koch, Leonard Leo are turning on him, or appear to be, but I don't know what else they expected. I certainly hope his voters start getting angry and vocal.

I just read that the senate's about to go on recess, which is making me furious

The Senate is about to go on a multi-week recess with the markets plunging by the most since COVID.

I’d say next week, at the rate the orange rooster is swinging in the wind.

Well, just long enough for DJT and his mates to make money buying low...

This does make me wonder if some markets were a little over valued to begin with.

DuncinToffee · 07/04/2025 13:53
Confused

EARHARDT: If you're saying that Trump is waiting on great deals, and 50 countries have already come to the table, have any of them been great deals? Good enough for him?

HASSETT: When he does, he's gonna sign with that big long beautiful signature and he will have made a great deal for America

My pension is 1/3 Europe, 1/3 USA, 1/3 everywhere else
Money goes into it each week.
I do not plan to crystallise any gains or losses for 5 years
wish me luck

A spell in wealth management software taught me the value of a diverse portfolio.

I can guarantee that a lot of shit investment advisors are starting to be revealed here. Having to field awkward questions like "What exactly were you doing for your 20% that a child with a dartboard and yesterdays* FT couldn't ?"

*Cheaper than buying todays.

BustingBaoBun · 07/04/2025 14:22

Can I recommend 'Harriet' on NF. Brilliant film.

Trump is desperately trying to rewrite history

Indeed.
I have a mixture of active and passive and know that some was pulled out of the US in November and January
but my IFA is solid so I leave her to it.

Llttledrummergirl · 07/04/2025 14:29

I'm not and never have been anywhere near wealth management, but as soon as Trump started talking about big changes to tariffs and giving the time of the big reveal, I would have sold any shares that I had.

He didn't exactly hide this.

Are Americans really as fucking stupid as this ? If so it's positively embarrassing that we've been touting them as the saviours of the free world for 80 years .....

That's one of the nicer things anyone has ever said about Stephen Miller
