Booths...what do I need to buy?

I've got a week's holiday booked in a beautiful Yorkshire cottage later this year. I've been before and usually get a Waitrose/Ocado delivery but as I'm going to be starting my break with a few extra days near Ripon, I'm going to do Booths!

Am a massive foodie but their website isn't particularly informative...any suggestions for their best goodies?

Cheese
thats all 😊

Favouritefruits · 22/03/2025 19:32

Their deli counter is immense just buy it all! I love their cottage loaf with lots of butter!

MadamePeriwinkle · 22/03/2025 19:54

Cheese and deli sounds right up my street.

I'm having a solo holiday and although I love cooking I don't want to do too much of it!

Do they do any decent pre-prepped stuff/fancy ready meals?

They do Cook meals which you probably have seen elsewhere. Own brand stuff tends to be nice meat/fish, and side dishes. They are more into stocking great fresh stuff and other brands that are really nice.

Their own brand ready meals are a bit rubbish sorry - nothing anything that tesco finest etc wouldnt compare with.

They do fresh stirfry/stroganoff type stuff on the meat counter though.

I don't want to dampen your
Excitement but booths
Is Massively overrated

They do some chocolate thins - especially the dark mint one, and milk sea salt one. You need at least one box per day.

I did exactly this for Christmas and would just say, it's not a massive store. And don't forget to pay for the car park!

Hahaha! I'm sure it's not quite all that and a bag of chips, but coming from the arse end of the south coast it'll still be novelty.

I'm staying in Harrogate so I'll be checking out Fodder and Weetons as well, and the giant M&S food hall there.

@drspouse COOK meals are the kind of thing I was thinking of and it'll save me a separate trip to the shop in Harrogate.

Great that's the sort of thing I do at home but from Tesco!

Booths canvas shopping bags are the best ‘bags for life’. Sturdy, roomy,
cone with 2 sets of handles (long and short) & a side helping of foody-themed wit.

hideawayforever · 22/03/2025 20:55

coffee renoirs, choux bun filled with custard and cream with a coffee icing on the top......delicious

RainbowsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 22/03/2025 20:57

PS They do Simon Rogan (of L’Enclume fame) ready meals in our local Booths

ZebraPaws · 22/03/2025 21:00

Definitely the bags. I have “This charming flan” and “the cake district”.

Cheese. Kaltbach and delice du Bourgogne are my top recommendations.

Weeton’s is lovely.

Have you been to Betty’s?

Runnyyolkplease · 22/03/2025 21:02

Love their pies from the deli counter - usually buy a couple in the morning and head off hiking, even better eaten at the top of a hill!

Great tip! I'm doing 5 days in Harrogate then heading off for a week in Haworth so there will definitely be walking and picnic (weather permitting!)

@ZebraPaws yes I've been to Betty's and Mama Doreen's.

I try to get up to Yorkshire every summer as I absolutely love it. Hoping to relocate at some point but for now family commitments mean it's just for holidays.

We like the curries from the deli counter - £6 for curry, rice and sides for 1.
Also the braised steak and ale and the steak and blue cheese individual shortcrust pies from the deli counter are excellent. I think they might be Northern Pie company, not Booths own.

Hot cross buns are seasonal now - we like the chocolate and ginger and simnel cake flavours best.

RainbowsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 22/03/2025 21:13

But surely even you would admit that Booths is a useful source of the basic comestibles that one simply cannot find in Weetons? 😂

First, the wonderful shopping bags.

Second, everything else.

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/03/2025 21:20

Booths deli counter is fabulous. They do Lancashire hotpot on the deli counter, as well as butter pies and a myriad of other pies, quiches, sausage rolls etc. My friend swears by their Scotch eggs.

Look out for Lathams cakes and Mr Fitzpatrick cordials. I’m also addicted to their packets of rosemary almonds as well as the already mentioned seasalt milk chocolate thins.

IAmNeverThePerson · 22/03/2025 21:21

Everything. Bread, meringues, cheese deli stuff. Lakeland icecream. All the beer. Shopping bags.

VWT5 · 22/03/2025 21:27

Desperate to get my hands on the bag “The Pie Who Loved Me”

(I have seen a lady with this bag every year for about 5 years in a holiday resort, always raises a smile. Don’t recognise the lady, but recognise her bag).

cryinglaughing · 22/03/2025 21:39

@HundredMilesAnHour Latham's is no more, they went bankrupt late last year.
Not sure who supplies their cakes now.

DarkersideoftheMoon · 22/03/2025 21:42

You need to get a booths bag…or two!

Miffyisverymiffed · 22/03/2025 22:17

The bags, the deli. Also soft drinks and cordials that you can't get elsewhere, cheese and cheese biscuits, eco cleaning products, bread, good selection of sauces, chutney and pickles. Lancashire lemon cheese (like lemon curd, but better). Tea.

It does depend on the store though, the smaller stores aren't so good.
