I think people aren’t taking into consideration that this is an American puzzle. That makes all the difference.

PBD. I now just allow myself a short time to look at the last 4 before pressing submit as default as 9 times out of 10 when I see the answer I know they no matter how long I looked at it, I would never have guessed it. Although to be fair, with this one, the ‘thing’ had occurred to me, but not that it could be the connection .

I think purple is trickier if you aren’t American but the other answers still work if you are British. In fact I’d say one of them is very British.
