I refused to be annoyed by this today! So I took a deep breath and didn't panic. It helped that yellow and purple came to me quite easily.

Blue, I guessed the connection but had to google for one I didn't know, and green was then obvious on left-over.

Cleverer people than me also agree with you, judging by comments online. I am very basic and so did not notice (and am still none the wiser!)

I argued with DH that it was wrong. DH didn’t agree. I know I’m correct. Annoyingly my being correct lost it.

I think you're being a bit too precise for Connections - it often has a faily slapdash approach.

Look at the absolute nonsense description for "Final Word In Broadway Play Titles" they used recently (Dolly, Yankees, Kate, Birdie) - something about a title that "is also a phrase." Kiss Me Kate isn't a phrase outside of that play's context, it's just bobbins. But it's still fun.

For properly robust groups we need to look to Only Connect. NYT plays fast and loose.

I agree that the 'slapdash' approach can mean an easier solve.

I often get a category right with an entirely different connection to the one revealed. If I think about it too much, I often talk myself
out of it.

(Conversely, going down the 'not thinking at all' path can lead me to the red herring).
