When did you last see someone smoke a pipe?

Watching Rivals. Yes, I know! But apart from the fact they're ALL smoking cigs, there's the odd pipe smoker.

My dad (RIP 20 years ago) was the last pipe smoker I recall!

Anyone else?

This guy!

My uncle - I loved the smell of his pipe, such a strong memory from my childhood.

CharlotteFlax · 23/02/2025 23:35

Pipes! I'd forgotten about them!

My uncle Allan smoked one in the 80s and 90s for sure. I can't think of anyone else since. Maybe some old fellas in the pub I worked at in the early 00s...

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 23/02/2025 23:36

I was thinking of this the other day. I think it would have been friends and acquaintances of my grandad in the 80s!

Nourishinghandcream · 23/02/2025 23:40

Not witnessed it for a few years now.☹️

In the town I used to work there was a tobacconist which also sold gifts so I occasionally popped in and loved the smell of the different tobaccos. A few customers buying tobacco so there were still some pipe smokers out there but I never witnessed it which is a shame as I used to love the smell of a pipe.

The last definite memory I have of a pipe being smoked was when I was a child but I am certain there were pipe smokers when I started work and they smoked in the office (as you could in those days).
On TV the most recent character who regularly smoked a pipe was Fred Thursday, another was Maigrait.

My papa smoked one and as much as I hate the smell of cigarettes I love the smell of a pipe. He used to have a big antique brass stand to sit it in and any time i saw it there I would pick it up and have a sniff at it.

There was also a newsagent I passed everyday on my way to school which had been a tobacconist before it was an newsagent and still had a display of pipes. It was the only place around to sell pipe tobacco. The shop was sold about 10 years ago then and all sign of the pipes gone but it still has a faint smell of pipe tobacco.

Yesterday, on the beach!!!

Wendolino · 23/02/2025 23:43

My uncle smoked a pipe, he died last year aged 95. He loved his pipe.

PermanentTemporary · 23/02/2025 23:45

A colleague on a night out and her partner in about 2002. He had a pipe in the pub garden and she picked it out of his hand and had a puff. I'd frankly have been less shocked if they'd had sex on the table. I find all smoking utterly weird but pipe smoking the most alien of all.

My late dh decided to take up pipe smoking about four years into our marriage in 2009. I was so sickened by it I genuinely wondered if I'd have to leave him. He voluntarily only did it in the shed out of my sight, then thank goodness lost interest after about a month. I still remember the smell though, made me want to puke.

justasking111 · 23/02/2025 23:58

My darling late FIL smoked one.. I smelt one years later on the beach. I went to stand near the old boy just for nostalgic reasons.

DoubleShotEspresso · 23/02/2025 23:58

At a wedding last year! Was quite captivating!

honeyfox · 24/02/2025 00:00

My late grand-uncle who lived with us growing up. He died in 1999. I do love the smell of a pipe!

BitOutOfPractice · 24/02/2025 00:03

My uncle used to smoke one. Loved the smell and all The paraphernalia that went with it.

Nat6999 · 24/02/2025 00:15

All my mum's uncles smoked pipes, both my grandads smoked cigarettes. I can still remember the smell of the pipe tobacco.

Fordian · 24/02/2025 00:16

Interesting! Do we remember the names? Old Navy was one.

48 and I’ve never seen anyone smoke a pipe in real life. Apart from a weed one

artfuldodgerjack · 24/02/2025 00:24

My grandpa. I still have his pipes and some still have tobacco in. Give them a sniff every so often, absolutely love the smell. He died almost 40 years ago...

murasaki · 24/02/2025 00:24

My grandad in 1995. He loved his pipe. Apparently started smoking one at 14 and lived until 91. if I smelled the same tobacco I'd probably cry.

ladymammalade · 24/02/2025 07:11

Couple of weeks ago I saw a bloke who looked about 25-30 years old smoking one as he walked along the street with his mate. Looked really odd, like he was just doing it for effect (his outfit suggested the same)

Diningtableornot · 24/02/2025 07:13

My dad in 1982

nitrofueled · 24/02/2025 07:13

My Dad used to for a short period when I was younger but he quit all that a long time ago. I do remember the plum smelling tobacco he used smelling amazing though!

Cornishmumofone · 24/02/2025 07:24

Old Holborn and Golden Virginia were some of the other common brands of loose tobacco.

My grandpa used to smoke a pipe. He died in 2002.

EarlierDistraction · 24/02/2025 07:29

A couple of years ago, I was in my car outside the station waiting to pick someone up and a car pulled up opposite me, a man in a very smart long black coat got out, leaned on his car and started smoking a pipe, I remember thinking it was the first time I'd seen one in years. A couple of my uncles used to smoke them when I was a child, I can still remember the smell, so much nicer than cigarettes.

I remember once being off school or work sick at my parents house in the 80s and there was nothing much on daytime TV in those days but I stumbled on the first day of a bowling championship, where one of the
competitors was playing while smoking a pipe. I picked him for the win, and ended up watching him all
week, he won the whole tournament, having been a multiple champion over the years. Never watched bowls again but it did make my week off work go by more quickly. David Bryant, pipe smoker extraordinaire.

willowpatternchina · 24/02/2025 08:09

Yesterday!

HowardTJMoon · 24/02/2025 08:15

Last week. I work at a university and there's still one or two old academics who smoke pipes.

I do love the smell of pipe tobacco. But I did once had the misfortune of sitting near someone cleaning their pipe and it stunk of a thousand ashtrays. I don't know if it was something peculiar to him, his pipe or the tobacco he was smoking but just remembering the smell makes me gag. And I was a cigarette smoker back then as well.
