When did you last see someone smoke a pipe?

Watching Rivals. Yes, I know! But apart from the fact they're ALL smoking cigs, there's the odd pipe smoker.

My dad (RIP 20 years ago) was the last pipe smoker I recall!

Anyone else?

1970s...our neighbour who subsequently died from mouth cancer

HelenCurlyBrown · 24/02/2025 08:24

A boyfriend’s dad in the late 80s. The smell was repulsive to me.

00deed1988 · 24/02/2025 08:30

My grandad died in 2003 and he was the last one I saw. Was always in his mouth unless he had a cigar instead. The yellow circle of nicotine above his chair in the front room was huge!

TheTecknician · 24/02/2025 08:31

The Benson and Hedges GV tobacco ads are on YouTube. I love the piano music.

RumNotRun · 24/02/2025 08:32

Someone I used to work with had a vape which looked like a pipe. It was much more visually appealing than the usual ones.

Onlyvisiting · 24/02/2025 08:33

I know a man in his 50/60s who smokes one now.
Our neighbour as a kid did, not sure if he's stopped now, but he must be 80/90 ish.
And another man we knew used to smoke a pipe, both those would have been in the late 90's to mid 00s and I guess they were both born around 1940s?

QOD · 24/02/2025 08:33

How funny you ask as I saw someone smoking one Saturday

Dearg · 24/02/2025 08:35

Boyfriend’s dad ,- he was a lovely man - died at 60 - lung cancer.

I hated the smell of his cold pipe, lying by his chair. Just like a used ashtray

Tiggi7 · 24/02/2025 08:37

Literally about thirty minutes ago.

My neighbour stands outside his house and smokes one several times a day Grin I think he might be the only person I've ever seen smoking one.

WorriedRelative · 24/02/2025 08:38

My uncle smokes a pipe, he's 80, although last time I met him he was vaping so it has been a few months since I have seen him with his pipe. He took it up to get out of the cigarette sharing "rounds" at work back when you smoked at your desk, then found that the amount of fiddling with the pipe meant he smoked less than when he smoked cigarettes.

I have fond memories of him sitting on a rock half way up a mountain packing his pipe with tobacco and then the smell when he lit it.

MirrorMirror1247 · 24/02/2025 08:39

My dad! He always used to smoke a pipe, then he had to have teeth extracted and found he couldn't grip a pipe with his mouth any more, so he switched to roll ups. This was at least 20 years ago. He's now wanting to use a pipe again, so he's getting one, along with the tobacco he always got, for his birthday. I do wish he didn't smoke at all, but at least a pipe is more dignified than roll ups!

villainandvixen · 24/02/2025 08:43

I seen someone smoking a crack pipe at T in the park about 20 years ago, does that count

ErnestTheBavarian · 24/02/2025 08:44

A man walked past us smoking a pipe a couple of weeks ago. He was late 20’s / early thirties. I think it’s a shame smoking is deadly and all that, as I’ve weirdly always thought my 3rd son was made for a pipe. But as it’s addictive and deadly I guess I won’t encourage him with that.

Sulu17 · 24/02/2025 08:45

I remember Harold Wilson always had a pipe in his mouth when he was PM in the 60s. I read many years later that he cultivated his 'man of the people' image so perhaps he never actually lit it.

My dad in the 70s used to smoke cigarettes and also at one time had a collection of pipes that he occasionally used to smoke, but I think he found them too much messing about. Horrible smelly things.

JC03745 · 24/02/2025 08:46

Yesterday!

DH and I were driving and stopped at lights when a man smoking a pipe walked past. I even commented to DH, as haven't seen someone smoke one since the 1980's!

YearsofYears · 24/02/2025 08:46

My grandfather. He passed away last year :(
It smelled really nice compared to cigs but it really ruined their house. The walls were badly stained yellow.

Mudflaps · 24/02/2025 08:49

Yesterday, my wonderful Father. He's 80 and smoked since he was 14, its was always a mix of cigarettes and pipe but for the last few years its just the pipe. The local shop gets the tobacco in just for him, its Special Virginia. My son was getting the tobacco for him recently and the woman serving told him that years ago there was an old man who lived in her village and smoked a pipe and she used to walk behind him if he was out just so she could smell it, my ds could tell her that the man was his Great Grandfather and I've a lovely photo of him (my grandfather) at almost 90 years old showing my son who was about 3 years old how to fill the pipe and ready it for lighting!! I'm heading to Poland for a few days next month and one of the things I'll be doing is looking to see if I can get some different pipe tobacco for my father, he likes to try different types and there's very little selection here anymore.

ThreeThousand · 24/02/2025 09:02

Have you read David Baddiel's autobiography- more of a biography of his parents? There are some very funny parts about a pipe smoking person.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/02/2025 09:12

A man I worked with last year. He was fantastically unusual not in a hipster way, just an old fashioned way even though he was only in his early 30s. He dressed like Rupert Bear, had been a monk and knew everything about everything. Genuinely, not in a know it all way. You’d be having a normal and he’d start telling you about the healing properties of the weeds growing in the office garden! I miss him now he’s moved offices.

Couple of weeks ago I saw a bloke who looked about 25-30 years old smoking one as he walked along the street with his mate. Looked really odd, like he was just doing it for effect (his outfit suggested the same)

I was going to say my grandad in the late 90s, but then I remembered when I was at uni in the 2000s there was a pretentious twat who smoked one, wore a top hat and watch chain etc.. So, sadly, that's my last memory of seeing one smoked in real life! (except weed ones)

EastEndQueen · 24/02/2025 09:19

My father smoked one! Thanks for the nostalgia. He was born in the mid-50s but was a bit of a young-fogey. Virginia tobacco in a little pouch. One of his friends, same generation still smokes one, no one else I have ever met. I like them, they smell less than cigarettes and people spend more time cleaning and tapping them then actually smoking

Bigfishes · 24/02/2025 09:21

Last week. Farmer friend

LavenderBlue19 · 24/02/2025 09:37

I regularly see someone smoking one when I'm commuting to work - this is in the City and he's quite young, probably 35-ish. He dresses slightly vintage but not in a fancy dress way (last time I saw him he was wearing a long flappy mac, like Cary Grant).

HJ1989 · 24/02/2025 09:41

My granddad, (on my mum's side), used to smoke a pipe with St. Bruno tobacco. He died in 2015,. I also had a Professor at university that smoked he too. I've not seen anyone else since....? 🤷‍♀️

Last week. I work at a university and there's still one or two old academics who smoke pipes.

I do love the smell of pipe tobacco. But I did once had the misfortune of sitting near someone cleaning their pipe and it stunk of a thousand ashtrays. I don't know if it was something peculiar to him, his pipe or the tobacco he was smoking but just remembering the smell makes me gag. And I was a cigarette smoker back then as well.

Yes, the man I saw smoking one yesterday is an academic. Not old though, probably late 40s. Mildly eccentric in an old fashioned sort of way.
