If Trump doesn't change his tune, then i think we should withdraw the state visit stuff... there is no point sucking up to him if he is just going to, in his words "Screw us over"
Ukraine's security is closely tied in with our own...

Though its quite likely Trump will change his tune again and again and again....

So best to hold fire for the time being...

I saw a link to a petition on the gove website. 20 signatures and it needs "approving". Presumably someone has to call Microsoft or Amazon or whoever hosts the gov website ?

Notonthestairs · 01/03/2025 10:05

There's no time limit on a state visit.
It can be withdrawn at a later point.
All focus has to be on what can be achieved by Europe.

Might be time to rewrite financial legislation to allow the UK & Brussels to free up frozen Russian money/assets.
We've utilised the interest payments thus far.

SerendipityJane · 01/03/2025 10:09

The problem with that is it could drive a lot of other less savoury regimes away from the light of the civilised world and into the debt of China. You can't just go around stealing countries wealth. You need a due process - under your own laws.

Notonthestairs · 01/03/2025 10:13

I don't disagree @SerendipityJane
Even as I typed I wondered what that would mean for international banking/the City.
But Europe is going to have to come up with a means to apply pressure on Russia. Militarily we aren't equipped.

Oh we are well equipped militarily. Which is the problem. It means that the temptation to use the nukes gets greater as Putin can't win conventionally.

And now he's been given permission by the US to actually use the nukes, then some smart thinking is needed.

I signed it yesterday, the 38Degrees petition, 70k have signed.

Europe is going to have to tax and borrow more, Germany is in the best position for extra borrowing, their debt to gdp is low.

But we are all going to have to tighten our belts, even if Trump goes in 2028, its likely another MAGA will be potus.

(+1)

I was talking about

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/719957/moderation-info

Which would get debate in parliament at 100,000

The Dodds resignation rather got eclipsed, didn't it ? As well as looking rather badly judged.

And Musk clearly wasn't wearing a suit. So where were the questions about him?

Notonthestairs · 01/03/2025 11:36

Zelensky has arrived in the UK.

I disagree. We should be following Michelle Obama’s excellent advice and go high.

DuncinToffee · 01/03/2025 11:49

Farage has spent all night cobbling this together: “The spat in the White House last night is regrettable and will make Putin feel like the winner.

“But this is not the end of the story, far from it.

“A peace deal is essential and Ukraine needs the right security guarantees.”

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 01/03/2025 11:52

And what are 'the right security guarantees'?

Notonthestairs · 01/03/2025 11:52

And it wasn't a spat. It was a reality TV humiliation game.

Hmmm. That didn’t workout so well for the Democrats.
I think maybe it’s worth holding onto the soft pressure the King could apply for a bit, perhaps, but I think Trump has shown that he isn’t interested in other points of view. Withdrawing it makes a strong statement.
I realise this is such an on the fence position I’ll get splinters in my unmentionables, but I’ve never been so glad I’m not involved in international politics and diplomacy,,,

Piggywaspushed · 01/03/2025 12:10

I am confused by MN today. I get that people can't outright call people bots or whatever but HQ are now outright saying it us our job to 'debate misinformation ' . Their word. I swear during Covid, if you reported disinformation, such as anti vaxx posts, they were removed, same with Southport, actually. There are posters plopping disinformation about Ukraine on every new thread.

DuncinToffee · 01/03/2025 12:15

They are leaving it once again to posters to counteract misinformation

Some is subtle but most are blatant

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 01/03/2025 12:17

But there's also a blatant disinformation campaign. When disproved the same posters post it elsewhere.

bombastix · 01/03/2025 12:21

They are after the big rouble.

It's actually rather sad that ordinary Russians are paid to do this as part of troll farms and get paid for engagement. People should just get on and say that, imo.

It's cheaper than bullets

DuncinToffee · 01/03/2025 12:29

The rouble posts are easily recognisable, it's more the 'are you going to send your 15 year old of to war' or 'we need the US' posts that are creeping in
