I'm keeping PMs available because of the threads in Alcohol Support that I'm a part of - I've had desperate women get in touch with me for some much needed 1:1 via PM. But that happens after they have posted on the threads, so I will be able to screen by username. I'll delete anything from a username I have not seen before.

Llttledrummergirl · 22/02/2025 13:24

I tend to check I know the username, and have interacted with them positively before I even think about opening pms.

You can set your DMs so that no-one can initiate a conversation with you. I did that years ago thanks to too many weirdos.

Weirdly mine are blocked.

Only I didn't set that up. Maybe MNHQ have made it default ?

PandoraSox · 22/02/2025 15:17

Yes, MN has switched off PMs for everyone.

BIWI · 22/02/2025 15:20

I can't help but feel that that was part of the 'strategy' behind the incursion - whoever is responsible wants to make life difficult, and the user experience less positive. Not just for MNHQ by proving that they can get around their systems, but also for MN users. First we couldn't upload images any more, now we can't see a visual element to anything people might link to, and now PMs are disabled.

Clearly MN isn't hosting the right kind of free speech.

Curious that such a clearly organised attack on one of the UKs most busy home-grown social sites has gone unreported.

Even The Register - usually one to highlight obscure tech stories has been silent ?

Personally I would suggest long term posters switch their MN email address to a burner one (which is internet tin foil hat 101).

BIWI · 22/02/2025 15:28

TBF the first time CSA images were posted on MN, it was reported on the BBC website.

Maybe I am overly cynical (and I wouldn't trust the BBC anymore than any other news outlet. They have a very odd relationship with truth) but that was in a "in other news" sort of tone.

With 2 subsequent incidents, then it's clear that someone has it in for MN, and I don't think it's over sparkly shoes. Which raises the story to a slightly different level.

BIWI · 22/02/2025 15:44

Here's the article:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c93qw3lw4kvo

It definitely wasn't 'in other news' in terms of tone or prominence on the site!

(And it's a kosher link, I promise!)

SerendipityJane · 22/02/2025 16:01

Meanwhile Telsa Swasticar won't be sold in the UK ... looks like it would totally fail Construction and Use regulations

"Chant Seig Heil, lose in style" 😂

I did that after the 2015 hacking which I discovered as I was on my way to the airport and flying abroad!

itsgettingweird · 22/02/2025 17:07

Truss has fallen into a bay a Koolaid.

She's losing it more day by day.

I'd love to know what her end game is.

itsgettingweird · 22/02/2025 17:07

Vat that should have said. But swimming in a bay of it works just as well 🤷‍♀️

I changed mine after the incident when people could access other people's account for a while. Mine was one of them!

PickAChew · 22/02/2025 17:20

The cyber truck has to be the ultimate twatmobile. It's pleasing that Tesla sales in general are down.

Gulf of Koolaid would be apt.

cardibach · 23/02/2025 11:25

Fingers crossed for Germany today. If they lurch right it’ll further destabilise everything. I think (hope) that Vance in Munich will have galvanised some who weren’t intending to vote to get out and vote something normal. Also Trump’s comments about Palestine might have shown some people who wouldn’t vote for the status quo due to dissatisfaction with the way that’s been handled that voting right makes it worse, not better.

DuncinToffee · 23/02/2025 11:37

Good analysis on the German election here

For a bit of fun

Because you TOTALLY asked for this… and MapQuest has NOTHING better to do… We’ve granted you exclusive access to a place very dear to our heart: gulfof.mapquest.com

Think of it as the Upside Down but more... minimalist.

Pls share so we can behold your genius (or judge you, lovingly) 😘

And if the far right don't win, they will explode with stories of rigged votes and ferment unrest that way.

"Uppers and downers - either way blood flows" as Pete Townshend wrong (and Roger Daltrey sang) in "5:15" from Quadrophenia

itsgettingweird · 23/02/2025 13:08

Pick 😇😂😂😂

pointythings · 23/02/2025 16:15

I went for an old classic.

cardibach · 23/02/2025 17:15

Half a relief in Germany. If the firewall stays in place and nobody works with them.
