Any medicines I should stock up on while in USA?

I'm on holiday at the mo in the USA. O had to go to the chemist today for something and it made me wonder if their is anything available over the counter in the USA that we can't get in the UK and is worth stocking up on?

Hydrocortisone cream. Great for bites/rashes and very cheap.
Melatonin obviously.
Antihistamines if you’ve got allergies.
Great big bottles of ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen (paracetamol).

Also teeth whitening stuff if you want it. You can get excellent stuff in regular stores here. I think Crest even has a new hydrogen peroxide toothpaste that’s supposed to be very good.

Nowthesaidmother · 16/02/2025 08:05

Can get hydrocortisone cream in the UK though? @ThatEllie or do they have better ones? My ds is going to America later in the year so curious.

Can also get rubbing alcohol here @Winterissolong

Op I would get Kirkland's anlcid controller and Kirkland's sleep aid. The ingredient in the sleep aid used to be in a headache medication here years ago but it got discontinued. Was the best medication for migraine and headache!

Melatonin gummies, I'm seriously considering booking a holiday in the US purely to restock.

Elle771 · 16/02/2025 08:14

Can't remember what it's called but they do like a painkiller cream that is magical for blisters and I've not seen it over here... wish I had stocked up while I was there!!

SulkySeagull · 16/02/2025 08:14

If you suffer with bad PMT/PMDD then Pepcid AC - studies recently show it can help and it’s prescription only here.

ssd · 16/02/2025 08:26

Why can't we buy melatonin here i wonder?

Not only can we not buy it, it has to be prescribed by a consultant. Not a GP. Which is ridiculous as it's very mild. Incredibly frustrating as my young adult adhd son has been discharged from mental health but still has awful trouble sleeping which was previously helped with melatonin.

mitogoshigg · 16/02/2025 08:50

Melatonin is the only significant thing that's available there otc. Most other things cost more in the USA anyway.

Sonolanona · 16/02/2025 09:39

Huge bottles of Acetaminophen (their name for paracetamol) and ibuprofen...it makes me laugh how you can only buy a tiny packet here yet in the USA 500 tablets in a jar.
And Melatonin.
I use it and Biovea is so expensive so whenever I visit somewhere that sells it I bring back a load!

witwatwoo · 16/02/2025 09:40

Advil, especially the PM ones
Naproxen
Tylenol

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/02/2025 09:47

The reason you can only buy a tiny packet here is to try to reduce paracetamol overdoses. I'm sure I've read that research has shown that somebody buying this stuff in the grip of an impulse to self-harm will rarely go to the effort of going shop to shop to acquire lots of small packets, whereas if they could get one big bottle or pack in one shop they might do something irreversible they later regret. It causes liver damage and may be fatal. Paracetamol overdoses have fallen since this measure was introduced here. Trump would no doubt regard this as a sign of the nanny state over here in Europe but I'm in favour of it.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn't know the limitations on pack size on paracetamol in the UK have been proven to reduce suicides when you said it "makes you laugh"?

Indeed. You can now buy 64 paracetamol at the same time from a chemist.

My mother used to buy them in bottles of 500.

Many moons ago I used a lot of cocodamol, there was a high street near me with 6 chemists on or near it, I used to walk up one side and back down the other buying 32 in each chemist.

You can buy them online. I use a website called piping rock, not too expensive and usually arrive within a week which always amazes me.

NigellaAwesome · 16/02/2025 09:54

I bought melatonin in Italy where they sell it over the counter. Due to go again in a couple of weeks although to a different part of the country, and hoping to restock again

I think there can be side effects which need careful monitoring.

MomBruh · 16/02/2025 09:58

Colgate Pro whitening toothpaste.

Owmyelbow · 16/02/2025 10:04

Buying melatonin online and feeding to your kids may land you in trouble further down the line. A friend who was struggling with her ASD/ADHD/OCD son mentioned it to one of their support workers and was told she'd be reported and investigated by social services if she did

TheLionandAlbert · 16/02/2025 10:07

Like others, I always buy jumbo tubs of ibuprofen. Also Tylenol pm, Crest strips (my husband uses them, I have trays so use peroxide gel) and Melatonin.

If you go on holiday in Europe or know someone going, it's available in NL in the supermarket. Much cheaper than flying to the US! We can't get sudafed here though, so swings and roundabouts

dorathexplorer · 16/02/2025 10:23

I buy Lidocaine sprays and creams and these as well as gummy vitamins.
