Any medicines I should stock up on while in USA?

I'm on holiday at the mo in the USA. O had to go to the chemist today for something and it made me wonder if their is anything available over the counter in the USA that we can't get in the UK and is worth stocking up on?

@Nolongera A pharmacist is actually permitted to sell a maximum of 100 paracetamol at a time, but some pharmacies choose to have a lower limit.

Mumsntfan1 · 16/02/2025 10:34

Melatonin is also available in Germany if anybody is coming here and needs some.

MissNowt · 16/02/2025 12:05

Pepto Bismol - very good for upset tummies. Melatonin also available in Spain.

Ah, right, they did mention that they used to sell 100s but that had changed, no mention of why.

I’m also on holiday in the US and I am going to do a restock especially toothpaste and teeth whitening strips!

Can anyone recommend a sleeping tablet I can buy from a pharmacy that will knock me out on the flight home. Had a 11 hour night flight coming here and didn’t sleep for a single second and i can’t do that going home

Iheartmysmart · 16/02/2025 13:25

Night time Advil and Abreva cold sore cream are the things I stock up on when going to the states. Melatonin gives me awful nightmares so don’t usually bother with that. I used to buy Neosporin as well but think that’s now available on Amazon.

Melatonin gummies, I'm seriously considering booking a holiday in the US purely to restock.

No Need to go that far, France will do. As will Italy

Simonjt · 16/02/2025 13:32

Melatonin
Big bottles of ibuprofen/paracetemol
Their version of calpol if you have small children as you can still get a sweetner free version, Tylenol I had forgotten the name
Teeth whitening strips

Promethazine will work fine or diphenhydramine. All the sleep aids in the drugstore will be a first generation antihistamine sedative like those, and some will also have melatonin.

Huge bottles of Acetaminophen (their name for paracetamol) and ibuprofen...it makes me laugh how you can only buy a tiny packet here yet in the USA 500 tablets in a jar.
And Melatonin.
I use it and Biovea is so expensive so whenever I visit somewhere that sells it I bring back a load!

Hilarious.

as pp have said there are conclusive studies that show the drop in od’s and several liver failure following pack size restriction.

i work in a&e and it’s not unusual for people to decide they are going to end their lives- only to find they either can’t buy enough paracetamol to do it, or MH/police manage to find them and prevent it before they’ve managed to find 3 or 4 different pharmacies.

i don’t think there’s anything I’d buy in the US. Most restrictions here, like paracetamol, are done from sound research, so there’s a reason you can’t buy them otc or in large amount. I sat on a panel once that made the decisions on whether drugs should remain otc or on prescription and believe me, it’s not for giggles or to make people lives harder. If you’re buying these things, you should probably be seeing a HCP for the underlying cause.

Yes to Neosporin or generic versions thereof. Best thing ever for a small cut or hangnail that’s getting infected.

Adapalene for acne or mild anti-aging is prescription here but OTC in America.

Kirkland moisturising shampoo and conditioner in America were fabulous and rumoured to be made by Pureology a few years ago. Also dirt cheap. I don’t know whether Pureology still makes them. (Kirkland is the house brand of Costco). Not a medicine and heavy to carry, I know.

alfagirl73 · 16/02/2025 15:14

NyQuil - fab stuff!

bigredboat · 16/02/2025 15:31

Dramamine
Melatonin
Neosporin

poetryandwine · 16/02/2025 15:46

@MrsCarson ’s triple antibiotic ointment is generic neosporin. Identical and much cheaper

SeaToSki · 16/02/2025 16:05

Mucinex…the best thing for managing any illness or condition that creates phlegm or snot

Aleve…very good painkiller

Melatonin…sleep aid

user9876543211 · 16/02/2025 16:13

One good thing about buying paracetamol there is you can get bottles of little tiny caplets - much nicer when you're under the weather than swallowing the horse pills we have here.

Yes, @poetryandwine is right. It's sold under the name Differin.

Yes! The absolute dog's b's for flu. It's trippy from memory. I was told it's been discontinued due to ingredients, hope not.

Caterina99 · 16/02/2025 16:24

I moved from the US nearly 4 years ago and my household is nearly at the bottom of the giant tubs of ibruprofen and paracetamol. I completely understand and support the reasons why they’re only sold in small packs in the Uk, but it’ll be a shock to my system to actually have to remember to buy them again.

curious79 · 16/02/2025 16:26

Acetominophen and ibuprofen are sooooo bad for you. If you can avoid them, you should.

but Melatonin - I buy loads of it. Part of many health protocols, including anti covid
