Is this expensive for swimming/gym membership?

I pay £27 each month for my concessionary membership (due to my disabilities) at my local council-run gym.

It allows me to access the swimming pool and gym. It’s for off-peak times only. I only use the pool, which I use three times a week.

I thought that my membership was quite steep in price, and wondered how it compares to other parts of the UK. I’m in South Wales.

That’s cheaper than it would cost where I am in the North of England. Our council for 2 activity is £39.50 a month, the concession price is £31.

Octavia64 · 29/01/2025 16:40

East Anglia.

Cheaper than either of our local ones. One council one not.

Nomoredamnmats · 29/01/2025 16:40

I’m in Yorkshire. I pay around £36 per month for a concessionary pass for pool, sauna, gym , cycle studio and classes. All unlimited hours and usage. We are very lucky. Yours sounds a bit dear in comparison, sorry.

The concession price here in east London is 31 compared to 34 pounds for the normal swimming and gym

I think it's a rubbish discount as well but times are tough I guess

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 29/01/2025 16:44

Very cheap to my mind but I pay £140ish and that's discounted

ZenNudist · 29/01/2025 16:46

Seems about right for off peak in leisure centres. I pay £36 for anytime access in NW leisure centres

LittleRedRidingHoody · 29/01/2025 16:49

Our local 'council' gym (not actually council owned any more, but still supposedly heavily discounted) is £38 just for the gym, or £49 with swimming/sauna access. No off-peak available - those are adult rates though (no concessions available online, but looking at individual prices for swimming etc it's about 10% off). And it's awful! Everyone's leaving in droves for the new Pure Gym. I honestly can't stand either (I had a fancy subsidised membership to a London gym and now I'm WFH I just run outside) ~ I'm in the Home Counties

Viviennemary · 29/01/2025 16:51

It's fairly reasonable I think

Puppupandaway · 29/01/2025 16:56

The equivalent for our local council run leisure centre is £25 for swimming and gym off peak. Not including sauna or classes (but they can be used at a discount if you have either disability or are on benefits.)
I'm in the West Mids.

£140?! For just one person?!

£140 for the gym???!

Marmite27 · 29/01/2025 16:59

Mines the same for council facilities, but mine isn’t restricted to off peak. It is subsidised by work though.

Puppupandaway · 29/01/2025 17:00

I've just checked and it goes as low as £20 a month if you restrict yourself to two of the centres instead of the four (all run by council, about 5 miles away from each other). So looks like it's quite a bargain here in the West Mids!!

I’m assuming that’s for David Lloyd, I know that’s how much our local one is!

mitogoshigg · 29/01/2025 17:01

That's cheap, concessionary price here is £35

Spicykitten · 29/01/2025 17:02

Sorry for drip feeding, but I just realised some classes are included too (like yoga, body conditioning and aqua aerobics.)

This has surprised me! I wish swimming lessons were included, but those have to be paid for separately

Where I am (north east) there’s a few different membership options - I’m on the cheapest which is £17 a month (12 month contract, it’s £21 no contract). I can use the facilities/swimming pool at anytime and it includes classes

That is a bargain, fair play!

South Wales here too. Ours are subcontracted from the council to a private company and the one I go to is pretty smart. I pay 30 with corporate and disabled discount, full price is 36. 4 leisure centres, all pools, classes, bagmington and pickleball etc all included. The classes are fab and as well as the usual weights and cardio they have martial arts, tai chi, meditation, yoga , Pilates and ballet and tap fit. I love it and think it’s a total bargain.

Mynewnameis · 29/01/2025 17:36

I'm south Wales too. I don't want to admit how much my David Lloyd membership is!

TartanMammy · 29/01/2025 17:42

That's cheap! Here we've got...

Council gym/swimming is £40ish.
Bannatynes £60
Pure Gym £25 but no pool.
Hotel health club £140.

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 29/01/2025 17:48

£80 here for swimming and classes. South east. Feel like it's a bargain. Less than £40 really is a bargain!!!

Reugny · 29/01/2025 17:50

Currently in an area of London where Is e no council gym as it is being rebuilt.

Cheapest private gyms without swimming pools are £26 per month. For those with a swimming pool £95 per month.

wednesday32 · 29/01/2025 17:51

I think value for money depends on how much a membership is used, your swims work out £2 each based on going three times a week which is an absolute bargain. My membership is around £80 a month which averages my classes to about £5 per session which I find reasonable

TeeBee · 29/01/2025 17:55

That's really cheap OP.
