Is this expensive for swimming/gym membership?

I pay £27 each month for my concessionary membership (due to my disabilities) at my local council-run gym.

It allows me to access the swimming pool and gym. It’s for off-peak times only. I only use the pool, which I use three times a week.

I thought that my membership was quite steep in price, and wondered how it compares to other parts of the UK. I’m in South Wales.

If it's council run and you only swim not Gym at all, can you not pay for sessions? Our local leisure centre, you have to pay for gym membership because that gives you an induction in the Gym which you have to have to use the gym. For swimming though you can pay just per session - £5.40 with the councils local concessions card.

Pools are expensive to run. Our 'council' gym is around £40pm. A single swim is about £6. I have a cheaper gym (£20) but no pool.

I swim three times a week, so it would be much more expensive if I paid for each session individually!

I pay £27 a month for swimming any time, no classes or gym included. Although I am disabled, they only offer a concession rate for pensioners and those on means tested benefits

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 29/01/2025 18:12

I pay £27 a month (that's the regular price, not a concession) for council run gym membership, all classes and pool in the NW. Same instructors and classes as local David Lloyd, which costs £££. Facilities due to be upgraded this year. It's a bargain.

dementedpixie · 29/01/2025 18:13

It's £24 for a discounted membership with my council gym/classes/swimming. I pay £35/month for my own membership

loftyfield · 29/01/2025 18:17

I'm in a London borough and our discounted gym membership is very cheap - £10 a month for unlimited swimming, classes and gym across all the leisure centres in the borough (including a lovely open air pool). That's for disabled people, there are other concessionary rates for students and carers which aren't as cheap.

Actually I've realised it's gone up to £11.65 a month now (I didn't get membership for this year as I too busy so I only just looked up current prices).

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 29/01/2025 18:31

I think that's really reasonable. I pay £74 a month for Monday - Friday only membership.

itsgettingweird · 29/01/2025 18:32

I pay £34 for anytime membership which includes gym, swim and classes. That's corporate discount rate. Usually £39.

I can't use pool though as there (9 times a week 😂) because my ds is a swimmer and so his club have pool and lessons in evening (it's a 50m pool divided by boom) or 5am and all being usd by club and not public opening me!

I think for off peak only hours seems a bit steep because if it's off peak it's aimed at those who can't work and those people have lower incomes.

itsgettingweird · 29/01/2025 18:33

I'm south coast central!

ArmyBarbie · 29/01/2025 18:36

Greater London David Lloyd- don't know exact figure but over £100 each

Anonymouse27 · 29/01/2025 18:46

Northamptonshire
Council run (I think) full adult membership £27.99 pcm for any time swim, gym and classes. The facilities do reflect the price though. The pool is also used for swimming lessons and clubs so access is limited.

WafflingDreamer · 29/01/2025 18:55

Sounds really cheap to me. Just swim at my council gym is £30 pm concessions are £24. Gym and swim is £44pm or £34 for concessions. Swim includes aqua fit classes and gym includes all swim classes and gym classes. My DH goes to a small gym that has won awards locally but doesn't have a pool and he pays £39 a month
We are in Cambridgeshire

ohtowinthelottery · 29/01/2025 19:00

Just checked our local pool/gym and it's £35.50pm if you sign up for 12 months gym & pool or you can get pool only membership for £24pm. Slightly more pm if you do 1 month rolling membership or cheaper in total if you pay an annual subscription.

loveawineloveacrisp · 29/01/2025 19:02

Cheap as chips.

Lovelysummerdays · 29/01/2025 19:02

Ours is slightly cheaper at £25 a month. Full membership is £40. I think if you use it 3 times a week it’s good value. You’d probably save the same amount on bills if you have a decent shower/ wash hair on pool days and just have quick wash at home in between.

Edited

Your individual sessions are obviously much more than mine
£5.40 X 3 would only be £16.20 which is £10.80 less than your membership.

That’s calculated for a week though, not a month. Unless you pay weekly?

I think that's very good value - but I live in London

Love51 · 29/01/2025 21:27

That's really good value. Especially as it includes swimming.

sproutsandparsnips · 29/01/2025 22:18

I'm also in south wales - local council (but contracted out) gym £37 for full adult for 5 gyms and pool plus classes. DS 15 £16. Local private gym attached to college £25 no pool. I pay £89 for premium membership of local David Lloyd with indoor and outdoor pool.

Eldermillenialyogi · 29/01/2025 22:32

A nice private gym with pool would cost £40-45+

I am extremely jealous of the David Lloyd membership! I hope I’ll be able to afford it, some day! There’s one near me, but I can’t justify the cost at the moment!

That’s about what I pay for DL, also GL, but it’s extremely convenient, just a short bus ride away, - and the closest council pool closed a while ago - for rebuilding, which is still years away. At least I get a towel thrown in - no need to cart a soggy one home.

The expense does make me go, to get my money’s worth.
