Are you actually more attractive than you think?

The old adage is that people always think they’re much more attractive than they actually are. But are there some people who are more attractive than they think they are? Perhaps due to low self esteem etc.

Do people really think they are much more attractive than they really are. I doubt that. My experience of most women is not realising or believing they are as beautiful as they actually are and always seeing the negatives. "My tummy's not flat enough" "I've got fat thighs" "My nose is too big" "I'm too tall/short/thin/heavy". There is obviously people with low self esteem and body dysmorphia who can't see how attractive they are due to that.

GreyAreas · 16/01/2025 19:21

Almost certainly not

I think the ‘people’ who think they are more attractive than they are, are men.

Bignanna · 16/01/2025 19:23

I look better in the mirror than in a photo, for some reason

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 16/01/2025 19:25

Well just before Xmas 2 of my female friends said ‘we were just talking about you for like 10 mins discussing how you’re very fuckable’ 😂😂😂 I definitely took that as a compliment and will be remembering that one. I am size 18 and only brush my hair about 3x a week so you can imagine how I view myself 😂

SnidelyWhiplash · 16/01/2025 19:28

I’m definitely guilty of thinking I’m more attractive than I am. I mean, I know I’m objectively attractive because people say it, but I absolutely can’t countenance the reality of that diminishing with age 😂

Sometimes I get a terrible shock when I see myself unexpectedly.

LinnettdeBelleforte · 16/01/2025 19:30

I must be. I don't think I am all that attractive but people (of both sexes, so not just men trying to score) tell me I am beautiful on a regularish basis. I am very low maintenance, keep myself clean and skin moisturised, well groomed and reasonably well dressed, and I am slim. Other than that, I don't bother that much about my appearance, I don't have any type of cosmetic surgery and don't wear a lot of makeup. People on the internet seem to think that one has to look like an influencer or like a Kardashian to be attractive, but that isn't so.

Me too! I often catch myself in a mirror and think I have a nice face. But then I see a photo and it's horrible!

sunshineandshowers40 · 16/01/2025 19:31

I think I look better in phots than I do in real life.

Weirdly enough, I'm the opposite. I don't especially love the way I look day to day, but the few times I am photographed I actually am pleasantly surprised by how I look. I always seem to look thinner in pictures than how I do in the mirror, which is odd as I always thought that the camera was supposed to 'add ten pounds'.

MatriarchalMadness · 16/01/2025 19:33

I have some days/times when I look in the mirror and think I look quite attractive, but most days I look pig-ugly 😂🐷🐽

CamelsForChristmas · 16/01/2025 19:34

I really hope I am more attractive than I think.

Just today my father said about my DCs that they are so handsome and that they certainly don't get their looks from our side of the family. My mother calls me a hobbit and a mushroom because i am heavy on top with stick legs. My husband calls me 'My Beautiful Wife''. I know which version I believe!

PermanentTemporary · 16/01/2025 19:34

I'm not beautiful*, pretty or good looking but apparently I am sexy. I'll take it tbh. Charming young men used to sing 'nice legs, shame about the face' as I went past. Made me realistic about my looks though in fact I quite like my face.

Dp calls me beautiful. Deluded man [gazes fondly at his arse]

Mostly, but not always. I have a couple of ex friends who were always low key bragging about how hot they were and how they couldn't move for men trying to chat them up. They were deluding themselves.

LinnettdeBelleforte · 16/01/2025 19:36

Tell your parents to do one. Next time one of them suggests that you are unattractive, or that unattractiveness is a family trait, say 'speak for yourself' with a big smile.

Some people have a certain something that's rarely to do with looks

I'm the opposite. Very photogenic. It's weird.

I'm attractive but honestly you'd think I'd used a filter sometimes 🤣

Definitely. Attractiveness isn't always obvious. Dh says that about a lot of people and I agree. Some people are so magnetic.

LionRumpus · 16/01/2025 19:45

When I look back at old pictures of myself, I think I look stunning in some of them. Even though I remember taking the picture at the time and thinking yuck.

This is true for me as well. I recently posted the only picture of me I like on FB. It was taken 5 years ago and at the time I nearly deleted it. But if i looked like that now I'd be happy! And i told myself I'd probably say the same thing in 5 years about how I look now.

Same, I hate looking at photos of myself, it destroys the image of myself that I have in my mind

StormingNorman · 16/01/2025 20:11

This is impossible to answer. How would you know if you’re more attractive than you think?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/01/2025 20:14

I would have once said I don't think I'm attractive really, certainly not as much as I used to and even then it was more that I could scrub up ok. I look utterly dreadful and like a big huge rectangle in photos. I am marginally better in real life.

However 5 days before Christmas I fell ill with Bell's palsy which has completely changed my whole face, as one side is completely dropped and it's only gradually starting coming back. It might be permanent. I definitely regret disliking my face for so many years because when suddenly having to deal with that, you realise how you're not actually that bad after all.

PerambulationFrustration · 16/01/2025 20:17

Well, I think I always look decent before a meeting when I'm checking the mirror then when I get onto teams, I'm so disappointed in how I look. So much worse. It makes me sad.

I think I was better looking than I thought I was when I was younger and just as I started to accept it, I've started to age and haven't got rid of baby weight so it's reversed now.
