Are you actually more attractive than you think?

The old adage is that people always think they’re much more attractive than they actually are. But are there some people who are more attractive than they think they are? Perhaps due to low self esteem etc.

I still think of myself as my attractive, slim 20-something self. Then I look in a mirror and reality sinks in.

I think if you delude yourself by thinking you are more attractive than you actually are, you have one less thing to worry about in life! And can save spending money on lots of beauty nonsense.

Like most people I am always surprised by how pretty I was when I was younger and I realise that I didn't really appreciate it that much when i was younger. I don't think I'm bad looking now but starting feel very middle aged. I think this is a mindset thing as much as anything else though, I feel the cold and prioritise comfort over fashion 😄, I don't do botox, filler etc.

My husband tells me I'm beautiful when I'm slobbing about and when I make an effort I can still turn a couple of heads but absolutely not in the way I did when I was young.

In any case I'm going to keep aging so trying to practice self love and not putting too high a value on how I look!

I don't get any male attention when out and about, whereas my friends always do, so assume I am not that attractive. However I don't seem to have a problem attracting men in other ways, so maybe I just don't give off good signals when on a night out or in public? Objectively there are lots of things wrong with me physically that mean I probably am not conventionally attractive, although I would say I must be pleasant looking. I get caught out with photos sometimes, all teeth and stringy hair. Treating myself to a nose job and eyelid surgery for my 40th this year!

I thought I was ugly, then at 32 I realised I wasn’t ugly. Got pregnant two years later and then I realised what ugly truly was as everything changed. Never recovered from that. Ageing hasn’t helped.

LadyChilli · 16/01/2025 22:13

I'm not. I'd score myself 8/10 and out of curiosity I put some pics on an app some time ago (photofeeler or something like that) when trying to choose a photo for my LinkedIn profile and the ratings matched my opinion. Still some harsh comments though!

Eggegggoose · 16/01/2025 22:32

My mum and 5yo DD tell me I’m beautiful but don't think that counts.
I just see my massive bump in my nose.

CeceliaImrie · 16/01/2025 22:41

I think I look nice in my bathroom mirror however if I see myself in clothes shop mirrors I look horrific and don't get me started on changing room mirrors.

soberserene · 16/01/2025 23:05

I always think that I take a terrible photograph, but maybe I am much uglier than I realise when looking in the mirror.

dayslikethese1 · 16/01/2025 23:11

The key is to put your mirror somewhere with low lighting and not think about it the rest of the time. And don't ever look into one of those magnifying mirrors for the love of God😆

ThatLimeCat · 16/01/2025 23:27

No, but only because I think I'm very attractive.

Eviebeans · 17/01/2025 06:04

How attractive you are isn’t always all about how you look

Some people have a certain something that's rarely to do with looks

This is very true

It's often been the case that I'm more attracted to partners who are perhaps not conventionally attractive, but who are interesting to be with and have a bit of an aura. I think being attractive is partly about looks, but also about charisma, character and charm. Still working on that! Grin

Agreed🤔
