Off the shoulder top and trousers in this weather

Seeking advice for clothes to wear on a date. I’m 30 and dread the cold. Going to a fancy - ish place then potentially drinks and obviously a dress is too much. A skirt and jumper isn’t enough so I thought. A nice pair of trousers and a top will do. I’ve attached the image. I’m thinking of putting my cardigan and puffy coat on to keep warm. Help?!

I think you'd look daft turning up in that for a date in winter.

Coldcoldwinterweather · 11/01/2025 09:39

How on earth do you keep a top like that up? Surely you would spend the whole meal worrying whether it had slipped down. Especially if you were shivering with the cold.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/01/2025 09:41

I'm sure it's possible to find a nice top with sleeves.

Also that's strapless, not off the shoulder.

1st date?
If so, way too much, independent of weather
On a first date, you need to look like you got your sh*t together
“I wear this massive, ginormous, cumbersome coat because I absolutely needed to wear my flimsiest of tops to meet you for the 1st time” = looks vain, insecure and impractical

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 11/01/2025 09:48

Yeah it’s a bit much, regardless of weather. Find a normal nice top, so you’re not preoccupied with pulling it up and he’s not so distracted by your fiddling that you can both concentrate on a conversation! Jeans and a jumper would be more appropriate in most of the UK this week.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 11/01/2025 09:51

Also is this a first date? Or someone you already know? And what does “Fancy-ish dinner” look like? Posh restaurant with tiny portions, upmarket gastropub? For the former a dress wouldn’t be too much. For the latter I stand by jeans and jumper, albeit your nicest of both!

CarefulN0w · 11/01/2025 09:52

Could you wear a wool dress? A fitted dress would be smarter & sexier than a boob tube. And would be a lot warmer.

KatyaKabanova · 11/01/2025 09:55

As pp have said, it's a boob tube, not a strapless top, or an off the shoulder top . It's really not a great look for what you describe. There's a midway point between that and a woolly jumper - perhaps a fine knit, or a shirt with something underneath?.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/01/2025 09:55

Dude seriously, just put on a cardie, it's going to be below zero everywhere today, blue and shivering is not a good first date look.

A skirt/smart jeans and a nice jumper is a perfectly acceptable winter first date outfit IMO.

If it were me I would wear thick tights, a long pleated sunray skirt and a fitted fine knit jumper/cardie.

user3827 · 11/01/2025 09:56

Looking cold isn't a good look

Dogiswhining · 11/01/2025 10:01

Omg, just no

biscuitsandbooks · 11/01/2025 10:13

What's wrong with a nice jumper, well fitting jeans and boots? Confused

why is a dress 'too much'? if it's fancy-ish, surely a dress is good?
Off the should tops just look tarty

jeans and a jumper for a date?! She’s not off to Asda! It’s not comfort at all costs you know

I think it's lovely and would wear it. I wouldn't wear a cardigan but would wear a jacket to the restaurant and back. My dd was wearing similar in cream when she was out new years eve and it was lovely. Mumsnet maybe not the best place to ask this. Ask your friends who know your style, area and age.

biscuitsandbooks · 11/01/2025 10:37

@LuckySantangelo35 err, yes? What on earth js wrong with that? It's -2 outside 🤣

KatyaKabanova · 11/01/2025 10:46

I would agree that style is also dressing for the environment and for the season. It is bitterly cold and even though the venues will be warm, it's better to dress for the climate. A nice pair of wide legged trousers, a fine knit top or shirt with a layer underneath would be appropriate. What kind of style and colours do you normally favour?

@biscuitsandbooks

it won’t be -2 in the bar or restaurant or wherever OP is going though will it?

biscuitsandbooks · 11/01/2025 11:15

@LuckySantangelo35 I just think it's ridiculous that women are expected to wear nest to nothing because "it's a date" but men are absolutely fine in jeans and a shirt 🤷‍♀️

There is no way on this planet I would be out freezing my tits off in January to try and impress a man 🤣

@biscuitsandbooks

i totally get what you mean but I guess what I’m thinking is that Op is gonna be inside most of the time and thus can wear whatever she wants and she clearly likes this outfit

biscuitsandbooks · 11/01/2025 11:32

@LuckySantangelo35 well yes, of course she can wear what she wants - I just think it's ridiculous to even consider something like that in January, but maybe I'm very boring and practical in that respect 🤣

lemonsherbert86 · 11/01/2025 11:44

Omg some of the comments on here!! Strapless tops look tarty?? Wow!

I think it's lovely. If it's a sat night in a city centre type venue then lots of people will be dressed like this.
I'm in my 40's and if I was single I wouldn't dream of wearing jeans and a cardi for a date or to go out with friends to a fancy restaurant on a Saturday night 🙈
I think it depends on venue and location.
As someone else has said, it will be warm where you are going, you just need to wrap up to go to and from.
