Off the shoulder top and trousers in this weather

Seeking advice for clothes to wear on a date. I’m 30 and dread the cold. Going to a fancy - ish place then potentially drinks and obviously a dress is too much. A skirt and jumper isn’t enough so I thought. A nice pair of trousers and a top will do. I’ve attached the image. I’m thinking of putting my cardigan and puffy coat on to keep warm. Help?!

I think it’s gorge for a first date!

Assuming you’re not going to be sat outside eating your meal, just put a warm coat on for the journey and then you’ll be absolutely fine once inside.

Good luck!

NoCheesesForTheMeeces · 11/01/2025 12:09

This thread is mad. It's a date, not a job interview! If the bar/ restaurant will be warm inside, what on earth is wrong with showing a bit of skin? Unless it's a complete blind date, presumably she'd quite like him to fancy her? OP it's fine. You won't be run out of town for showing your shoulders.

2JFDIYOLO · 11/01/2025 12:10

Why do you feel the need to be so exposed in this weather???

Some thin layers with your trousers would be better than a strapless boob tube.

@biscuitsandbooks

jeans and a jumper for a date?! She’s not off to Asda! It’s not comfort at all costs you know!

Oh dear. This is my go to date outfit...

Movinghouseatlast · 11/01/2025 12:15

I don't understand why a dress would be too much but this top wouldn't be?

I'd wear a dress. You will look nice and not be freezing cold.

No33 · 11/01/2025 12:16

Honestly, I've been to 'naice' restaurants in Manchester and been fucking freezing! Big old buildings are difficult to heat I suppose.

I love the outfit, do you have something sheer you could cover your arms with? I was thinking a completely sheer long sleeve top underneath would give some extra warmth and not change the look too much!

Enjoy your date!

Doggymummar · 11/01/2025 12:18

There are nice, smart fashionable examples of jeans and a sweater it doesn't have to be the same ones you use for dog walking or the supermarket. Nothing wrong with the top, I would wear it with my Spanx arm toner top myself for an extra layer of warmth but I think it's nice and not too try hard, depending on the venue. Bit much for a chain restaurant but nice for a fancy place,

Exactly. I wasn't suggesting going out in ill-fitting jeans and a mud-covered sweater, lol. There are some beautifully-fitting ones out there.

cantthinkofausername26 · 11/01/2025 12:44

I think it's nice. I can't believe all these people saying it's too much for a night out?? They'd all wear a jumper for a night out to a bar???

Yes, absolutely I would. A nice, well-fitting jumper and jeans is absolutely fine for a night out in the middle of January. It's absolutely standard wear around here, with maybe a smarter/dressier top underneath.

wehumans · 11/01/2025 12:53

I think it’s lovely. As long as you’ll be inside you can wear whatever really, just bring a warm coat for when you’re outside

Hotmess1 · 11/01/2025 11:57

“Tarty”?! What decade are you in 😂

Would you prefer slutty?
Common?

ApolloandDaphne · 11/01/2025 13:03

If a dress is too much then that top is too little.

Again, it's a date, not a religious ceremony. Are you not equally worried that she might flash a hint of ankle in a dress?

fivebyfivebuffy · 11/01/2025 13:48

@biscuitsandbooks near me you wouldn't get in anywhere as there's a dress code if it's the weekend so that's another thing to check
No jeans, no trainers

Because the OP said she gets cold.

There are plenty of sexy date outfits suitable for smart restaurants that don't involve freezing your tits off. And cardies might be cosy, but not many of them have much of a wow factor.

I haven't gone anywhere with a dress code in well over a decade 🤣

littlespoonlifer · 11/01/2025 14:26

This thread is so odd

OP as someone who is only a bit younger than you let me tell you now that outfit is spot on!

No harm in adding a long warm thick coat as inside the places will be warm

What bag and shoes are you going for?

Heaven forfend! Grown men will have lascivious thoughts and governesses will swoon!!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/01/2025 14:31

Why is a dress "obviously" too much? I think a dress would be absolutely fine. Depending where you are going that top night be fine or it might not, and I wouldn't chance it if you aren't sure.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/01/2025 15:19

I din'r think strapless tops are "slutty " or "tarty", but I think there are few women alive who look good in them. Small women look swamped and larger women look, for want of a better word, a bit hefty. I am 5ft 7 and a size 14 and look like a line backer in strapess tops 😂 I think it is the way they cut you off just below the widest part of your torso.

Hotmess1 · 11/01/2025 22:14

ItFellOffAgain · 11/01/2025 13:02

Yes, “slutty”, “tarty” and “common” are all perfectly acceptable terms for describing an item of women’s clothing in 2025.

go the whole hog and just call her a massive slag who will never find a husband for having her shoulders out, why don’t you?! 😂

You know fine well that the descriptor was applied to the garment, not the OP.
Please don't stir

I do know fine well the descriptor was applied to the garment, that’s why I said exactly that in the first sentence.

the point is they are outdated and misogynistic words to use to describe anything

Crunchymum · 12/01/2025 09:08

Tell me most of the posters on a thread are middle aged, married women without telling me 😂

Hope you wore your top and had a lovely date OP.
