Off the shoulder top and trousers in this weather

Seeking advice for clothes to wear on a date. I’m 30 and dread the cold. Going to a fancy - ish place then potentially drinks and obviously a dress is too much. A skirt and jumper isn’t enough so I thought. A nice pair of trousers and a top will do. I’ve attached the image. I’m thinking of putting my cardigan and puffy coat on to keep warm. Help?!

@Crunchymum this!

I would never go on a date wearing jeans and a jumper - wtaf 😂 awful advice. I love the outfit too OP. Hope you have a lovely time!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 12/01/2025 09:40

Fitted blazer over the top will look nicer than the cardigan and you can keep it on or take off if the venue is warm.
Alternatively my go to in this weather is usually fitted / skin tight polo neck with long sleeves. I have bodies, tops and dresses in this style. Always a winner. Looks chic and on trend too plus warm.

Enjoy

Tell me most of the posters on a thread are middle aged, married women without telling me 😂

Hope you wore your top and had a lovely date OP.

Exactly, jeans and a jumper indeed 😂 I'm 39, 5"9 and a size 8 and would happily wear this and actually wore similar on the 30th December on a night away with DH in Glasgow but the top just had very thin spaghetti straps. Absolutely nothing tarty, slutty or Mysoginstkc about it and I certainly never seen anyone in jeans and a jumper in the bars in Glasgow, including women a couple of decades older than me.

And yet plenty of us have had very successful dates wearing jeans and a jumper 🤷‍♀️

I wonder how many men agonise over their outfits to this extent.

GreenLeaf25 · 12/01/2025 14:54

@biscuitsandbooks who was agonising? If OP posted this outfit I'd guess she isn't a "jeans and jumper" type. I'm not either and I like to make an actual effort!

Hm, interesting how certain clothes are perceived as making an effort but a smart jumper and designer jeans aren't🤷‍♀️

TriangleLight · 12/01/2025 15:24

I have this top from River Island and it’s really nice and a bit less full on for a first date.

I like the look you’ve posted,think it’s classy. just think it’s a bit ott for the occasion.

I’m ancient but go out in Glasgow,agreed not jeans and jumpers place 😂

Pinkelephant66 · 12/01/2025 15:29

Am I missing something?? You’re only 30 of course this top is fine to wear! It’s not too much at all!

cardigan / coat when you’re outside, then take it off when inside 🤷‍♀️ after a few bevvies you won’t feel the cold anyway

Sidebeforeself · 12/01/2025 15:29

@Crunchymum Are you Greg Wallace?

TriangleLight · 12/01/2025 15:36

There are lots of lovely furry jackets around too, just now that would be perfect

I'm in my 40s and happily married but at least I remember dating and actively wanting the guy I was dating to think I looked hot. It was fun!

sommerjade · 12/01/2025 21:12

I'm 48 & single & overweight & still try to look hot on a date (sexy I mean not warm as in wearing a snuggly jumper).

Obviously wouldn't wear OPs top because I'm overweight but there are many options before giving up and wearing a cardi on a date.

Humour attempt failure.

I’m sorry to hear that! I hope it wasn’t because he was boring AF and said he’d prefer you to wear jeans and a jumper

It’s because I jokingly said “ gosh you’re handsome can’t believe you’re not a player” I think I said it a few times given I was drinking but now malice intended. So he stropped off left me stood alone in the middle of a really busy bar and went to get his keys. I had to walk over to him and ask id he was ok. He insisted he drive me home when I said id get an uber. He wanted to talk it out. He then kissed me. Then never texted me again. All in all. Disaster.

He insisted he drop me off and kissed me after the date. Then told me to organise the next one. If anyone got the ick it was me.

Hahah I gave up. I’m sick of the dating scene right now. It’s such a mess of on and off relationships of men with more baggage than I take on holiday. No thanks!!
