I haven’t finished it yet, Im halfway through episode two. Anyone else watching? It seems a bit predictable so far.

Think it's Phil Davies? He was in Platform 7

the80sweregreat · 06/01/2025 09:35

I found out it is Phil Davies after checking IMDb
I thought he looked familiar

A lot of negativity online around the lack of Social services intervention and how did Miles find the address.
I suppose we have to suspend belief.

Yes, there were a lot of plot holes despite it being watchable.

I was gobsmacked that Maddy and Pete jumped straight in with being so friendly with Miles/Lucy. They were hugely disparate in homes/wealth, they were very odd both of them... I would have been so so wary, I would not have accepted any presents and I would have stepped back a lot. It was just odd that a sensible couple like Pete and Maddie just became so friendly with them.

Oh my! James's old friend has just told him to fight back, I think they heard me saying this 🤩

James?

MeMeMeMeOw · 06/01/2025 14:10

These sorts of dramas always have to end in a (literal this time) cliffhanger where someone is punched and battered and ends up in the drink. Usually the baddie, and that's fine, but it's predictable.

Pete

Sorry

Yeah, there was no chance of Lucy and David going over the edge. Only surprised we didn’t see Miles watching them from a distance in the final scene.

Ooh I really hope he hasn't survived!! Better to keep it as it is at one series imo!

Thornybush · 06/01/2025 15:39

I was sure they would try to kidnap Theo . Also did I miss something when Miles gave them the baby monitor, did they use it?

Hi all. I'm not reading the thread as I've not started watching this yet.

I just wondered if anyone could let me know of any themes in this that might be triggering? I know that triggers are different for different people, but there are a few things I need to avoid so thought I'd ask here before deciding whether to watch!

There’s another watch thread that’s tv pace here (I think it’s an official one?) and they have a trigger warning on it:

Trigger warning: Playing Nice doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, including family separation, identity, postpartum depression, emotional trauma, and domestic abuse, which some viewers may find distressing

What I don't understand or what wasn't done well was enough explanation of Miles's back story, and at the end when he said to Lucy "I don't need you and I don't need David", what did he think would happen to the David Foundation without David? What was all that about anyway?

AzurePanda · 07/01/2025 13:50

I thought it was batshit. The plot made no sense whatsoever; Lucy was so afraid of her psychotic husband bringing up their baby that she swapped him but then went along with the plan for him to have custody of both?

Also agree that the childhood stuff and “David Foundation” didn’t go anywhere.

I think she felt that their child would have inherited psychotic genes from his father so she wanted to give him the best chance in life with nice parents to prevent that. (This was touched on in the show when they said that Theo showed signs of misbehaviour towards other children etc). Miles blamed Maddie for this over her mental health. You could see that Lucy was reluctant about having custody of both boys but went along with it as Miles bullied her.

LeonoraFlorence · 07/01/2025 14:52

DH and I watched this. He is awful for picking holes in things (solicitor 🙄!) but I enjoyed it. It is a case of suspending belief I think before you can get into it.
The little boys were both gorgeous! I loved Maddy’s hair too, really suited her.
Any recommendations of what to watch next? We aren’t big tv watchers but now littlest DD is sleeping better we have decided to hopefully get into some dramas. Well, I have!

During the hearing the child psychologist touched on this too. Saying the influence of Pete and Maddy was positive on Theo.

Thornybush · 07/01/2025 14:57

I agree it's a bit flaky though. I think they would have been better to leave it that Lucy thought her baby was going to die so swapped him for a baby who would survive. Didn't want to make Miles angry by losing his son etc.

TulipTiptoer · 07/01/2025 15:05

Yes, and that was my guess during it

AzurePanda · 07/01/2025 18:39

I get that she was concerned about Miles’ genetic inheritance but I still don’t understand why she went along with the plan to get custody of both boys for so long - 3 is young enough for any good work that his interim parents achieved to be undone.

I agree with you @Thornybush - would have made slightly more sense!

Lulooo · 08/01/2025 23:55

I watched 1.5 episodes and it was causing me so much anxiety I had to just skip to the end of episode 4 to see the outcome before I could go back and watch the rest.

Definitely lots of plot holes and too much predictability. I also thought the scenes were not fluid and sometimes it felt like we were just jumping too much time. I wanted to know what exactly happened with Miles brother David and would have liked a few more scenes with Pete’s friends. What was Maddie’s relationship with the sous chef? I thought it was leading to something such as Miles using it to claim she was having an affair.

Pete and Maddie’s silence and passiveness was really frustrating. It’s like they’d never heard the concept of fighting back or standing up for themselves or telling Miles to go fuck himself. Miles was too bad a baddie. I felt it should have been a bit more subtle but he was a completely one-dimensional baddie.
