Anyone on LinkedIn ? That's slowly turning a rather fetching shade of "Facebook Brown" as Ball and Farrow would name a gross pots of shit they ordered by accident.

Not on it but it is where the Rachel Reeves just made tea thing came from

Just seen it, MN really has a been a cesspit the last week or so especially makes me feel so depressed & then I get daft thoughts that it’s the general consensus & people are really believing what they type I couldn’t sleep last night as it kept whirring around in my head, very silly of me I know.

It can get to you like that. I usually distract myself with football froth.

No picture of cats or flowers, hope these will do Flowers

I was listening to ‘Any Questions’ on R4 this lunchtime and they were discussing Musk, and Zuckerberg abandoning fact-checking. Yasmin Alibhah-Brown was talking about a fake Guardian article supposedly by her doing the rounds on social media.

Full fact article

Im trying not to get involved in the countless posts. They remind me in a way of the posts doing the rounds during the Brexit negotiations and Covid where different people seemed to be following the same script. Any attempts to call them out are often defended by genuine long term posters who are to the right of the political spectrum. My suspicions are that Tate’s followers or similar are being used.

I used to live close to Amber Valley and parts of it were BNP territory. They used to hold the BNPs Red, White and Blue festival in the area.

Guardian article suggesting white people should be treated last by the NHS is fake - Full Fact

A screenshot implying a columnist has argued white people should be at the back of the queue for NHS treatment has been shared online, but it’s not real.

Stephen Yaxley Lennon ... hmmm ... I wonder if they will compose a drinking song after him ?

The most effective way to fight ignorance is with knowledge. Either knowledge you already have, or that you acquire. Because you know your opponents won't. Which is why you have this rinse-and-repeat cycle where no new knowledge is exchanged (and therefore a marker for bot-led "discussion").

I have spent longer than my working life delving into the issues around machine learning.

I'm about to attempt to learn more than I ever wanted to know about the true life and times of Yaxley, and that means court documents and not his books. Ffs, it's insane that I have to do this to ensure I keep a relationship with someone I love and care for very much.

I suspect Nick Griffin will turn up on my list at some point if his name is being pushed forward as un unsung hero of our times.

It’s brilliant, isn’t it? I particularly like the little sketch of Trump top left.

That’s been going on for a while. I don’t believe a word of it. In the last 24 hours Alexandra and I have both been accused of being closet Tories. 😂

Mr B would be delighted 😂

No not silly. I start to worry that decent people are in the minority and that most people are like those posters, they just hide it.

Which, I guess, is exactly what the threads are designed to do. Make us unsettled and worried.

If you are trying to argue with someone using facts, I'd save your resources.

Here's a terrifyingly amusing story about a flat earther who was successfully bought back to sanity

Make us unsettled and worried.

Thing is, plus ca change and all that. 220 years ago we'd be shitting our pants over French monkeys. And a hundred years before that Popish plots.

I suspect we are living through the equivalent of the fall of the Republic back in the first century BCE. Almost following the exact template of a triumvirate (remember Crassus ....). Personally I am saddened that modern sensibilities have eschewed the naked politicking of marriages the Romans were used to. And women being stripped of power and influence is a real bummer. But as someone who often wondered what ancient Rome would have been like, it's hard not to be slightly hypnotised.

Is the current crackdown on WFH the modern equivalent of the Servile wars ? Who is the modern day Pompey ? Where in the world would you line a road with 6,000 crucified strikers ? These are all questions that no one is asking.

prettybird · 11/01/2025 18:37

Bringing together some of the topics being discussed, I remember that Kriss Donald's (white) mother called for calm and no retaliation toward the Asian community after his racially motivated murder, while Nick Griffin was trying to exploit racial tensions - and failing to do so. It's a test both to Kriss' mother and the multi-cultural community that she lived in that he failed - and the BNP wasn't able to win any seats in the following council elections.

The kidnapping happened literally a few metres from the primary school that ds started at the following August.

Elon Musk doesn't have a fucking clue when, 20 years later, he tried - like Nick Griffin - to exploit the murder to his own ends Angry

MsJinks · 11/01/2025 18:43

Bit off current topic, and posted on Trump thread, but seems Greenland Pm states he is ready to talk with Trump about Greenland's future. He says they don't want to be Dane's, or Americans, but honestly this is a real surprise to me as I just thought it was outrageous and deluded Donald talk - I feel I actually know nothing about anything at all that happens in today's world - strange times.

Piggywaspushed · 11/01/2025 18:46

Anyone else watched Borgen? The last series dealt with Greenland.

Blimey. That is a surprise.

I am staying off all the dodgy goady threads for a while. I don't think they are good for one's mental wellbeing.

Very wise. I think you’re very brave to go there at all.

DuncinToffee · 11/01/2025 19:14

I don't know much about Greenland (couldn't get into Borgen) but according to this article it's not unusual for a Greenland PM to talk to US administrations.

A little thing that made me chuckle. In 2024 Johnson's book sold fewer copies than Greg the Sausage Roll.

Have a lovely Saturday evening, all.

I know these two won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but Ep 359 of The Rest is Politics this week was excellent. I’m a big fan of the podcast and although would not vote Tory I really admire and like Rory Stewart. He is excellent in this episode.

Also The News Agents podcast this week with Andrew Norfolk.

Still lurking. Have been for ages, thank you so much to all the regulars. Will find some delurking tax…

New post on Dividing Lines: on the Tories' call for a grooming gangs inquiry and their protests about being labelled far right when they're not being labelled far right
dividinglines.substack.com/p/under-review

https://dividinglines.substack.com/p/under-review

Sorry if this has already been posted - I've been out all day (it's going to take a full day to warm up I think)

Anyway good article outlining some of this weeks events.

"Calling for an inquiry is not far right. Being concerned about grooming gangs is not far right. But coming into a debate where the far right are active without drawing clear lines is dangerous, because it amplifies and emboldens the far right..."

itsgettingweird · 11/01/2025 20:16

I also like Rory Stewart.

I think he’s principled and has moral and logical reasons that make sense to him. He’s still a Tory, so I disagree with him a lot.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/01/2025 20:25

While I clearly have (very) different political views to those of Rory Stewart, I have nothing but respect for him. I think we'd be in a much better place in the UK today had he won the Tory leadership rather than the lunatics who took over the asylum.
