While I clearly have (very) different political views to those of Rory Stewart, I have nothing but respect for him. I think we'd be in a much better place in the UK today had he won the Tory leadership rather than the lunatics who took over the asylum.

I agree.

Christ, yes. I don’t have any issue with old school Tories like him. He’s a world away from the current iteration.

Anyone else watched Borgen? The last series dealt with Greenland.

I've been trying to remember which drama had this plot for days!

Given the freedoms from the worst of Danish rule that Greenland has so very recently achieved and the horrific things that were done to their people, I'd be concerned that being subsumed by a country that looks keen to strip workers rights from its own people would be a massive step backwards. It's not like the US has any better a track record with indigenous peoples than Denmark.

No freedom of movement for Arron

Tragic.

BIossomtoes · 11/01/2025 22:11

It’s an awful pity, isn’t it?

PandoraSox · 11/01/2025 22:12

In other good news, MNHQ seems to be finally taking some action against the bigotry of the past couple of days.

I've lost hope in MN. I'm weaning myself off it but I do like to come in here to keep up to date with sensible bits of news. I can't believe some of the posts that are allowed to stand.

BIossomtoes · 11/01/2025 23:25

It’s been an awful few days but hopefully it’ll calm down now. I missed you Zonder.

ilovesooty · 12/01/2025 00:17

I looked at that thread and backed away slowly. I bet that OP was hoping for another thread running to 1000 posts.

Zonder · 12/01/2025 00:20

Thank you @BIossomtoes

This is where I stand.

Don't agree with all his policies and stances - but I've never agreed with any MP or PM 100%.

He is certainly "old school" and i really cannot see him behaving as say Badenoch does or a Patel etc.

As for respect? absolutely, he resigned from the Tory party, which is mad if you think about it, he would definitely have been fine in Thatchers Govt, which at the time was seen as right wing.

It shows how far the Cons have moved from what was the centre ground.

Good to see in polling this morning the majority of the UK see Musk as bad for our politics.

Piggywaspushed · 12/01/2025 07:29

I don't mind Rory Stewart. I did find his book a good read but rather tedious in his lack of critical self awareness and quite arrogantly sure that he is amazing.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/01/2025 07:44

Sadly I don't think anyone educated at the Dragon School, Eton, and Oxford is likely to be any different.

Piggywaspushed · 12/01/2025 07:47

Yes, that is true.

Efacsen · 12/01/2025 08:43

Agree with a lot of the positive comments about Rory Stewart but remember looking at his voting record around the time of the leadership elections and it wasn't in any way admirable

So a bit on the fence about him really

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/01/2025 08:58

I think to be fair my views on Rory Stewart are coloured by how appalling the alternatives (predictably) turned out to be.

I remember on this thread we were quite surprised at some of his voting record.

But we also have to consider what was whipped votes.

He's still a Tory. I personally don't mind the true centric one nation Tory's. My views align with theres in many way alongside my left wing views on things like education and health.

Or maybe it's just the others have gone sooooooo far to the right they are blobs in the distance and any "normal" Tory seems far more centric than they are?!

PandoraSox · 12/01/2025 09:07

"Blobs in the distance" that is a great way of putting it @itsgettingweird . I think your last paragraph nails it.

BIossomtoes · 12/01/2025 09:10

I think the Tory party has undergone a sea change in the last decade and Stewart is a remnant of the old guard, most of whom were ejected by Johnson. I could never support most of the policies Major, Heseltine and Clarke espoused but I never doubted they acted in good faith and genuinely believed they were acting in the country’s interests. They’re like a different species to the current lot.

Piggywaspushed · 12/01/2025 09:22

There is a thread currently runnjng where those who share the OP's views keep claiming centrism. We seem to have lost sight of what that means. They seem to think extreme views cancel each other out and so you end up in the middle. It's like declaring someone an atheist because they don't go to church, even if they fervently believe in God.

That's it isn't it? In a nutshell - we won't always believe in all policies from any PM but you have to believe they are acting in good faith.

I don't believe the current lot are acting in good faith because of how they talk and the language they use.

I believe Farage gets more people on his side because of how he presents his argument (I mean I don't agree with a single thing he says!) but he says it in a way that gets people onboard and listening. Even those who aren't naturally far right.
