Super king bed

Hi! So we’re finding our double too small and I’m looking and kings and super kings.

Beyond the measurements, are there any considerations you think I should be taking on board before purchasing?

Also - what are your views on fabric headboards? I’ve only ever had wood and I’m worried it may stain and get smelly over time, does that happen?!

Thanks

Sold!

We are lucky to have plenty of access and room space. I hate anyone breathing near me so I’m going to go for super king!

Thanks all!

We've got a superking and we love it. Ours came in knockdown form, so was easy to get into the room. It's also got underbed storage which is great - I keep all sorts under there and it just lifts up when you want anything.

We have a fabric slipcover for the headboard which can be removed and washed. I had the same concerns so hunted for a washable option.

We have a superking that dp built to accommodate cosleeping. It is very big, only just fits in our average size bedroom and is a bitch to change the sheets 😂

I think it depends how much space you like. If taking cosleeping out of the equation I'd prefer a king, roomy but not like you're sleeping completely separately to your dp. But with a superking you can of course still cuddle and then move apart if and when you want your own space 👍 and if you have young kids who like to come in for a morning cuddle there's plenty of room

Have 2 single quilts plus a throw on top.

Much easier!

BashfulClam · 01/01/2025 21:08

I love my super kind but dread getting it back out of the house if we ever need to. It had to go up two flights of stairs and it was two 180 degree turns.

BashfulClam · 01/01/2025 21:08

Also feel like I’m in a different postcode to DH.

TheChosenTwo · 01/01/2025 21:11

We have a king at home but currently away in a superking and it’s next level luxury, I feel like I’m miles away from dh.
we were just talking this morning about how we ought to replace our king with a super despite it only being about 5 years old.

Ha yes - my electric blanket is currently on heating my bed before I head up. I do an (internal) happy dance every time I get in 😆

Edited

It's the best 🥰

Changing the duvet cover really is a 2 man job. If you’ve got the room I’d definitely recommend it. DH and I have just returned from holiday where we had a double bed and I really did miss our superking. If we had a double at home we’d probably be in separate rooms by now 🤣

No issues with fabric headboard at all.

You could have 2 single duvets instead of 1 superking.

I have a super king and would never go back to a smaller bed.

We just have one superking duvet but I'm surprised by the posters saying two single duvets on the bed though, single duvet is tiny, surely it would be 2 doubles if having two?!

I could probably get on board with two double duvets instead of one big one. I'm short and struggle with the duvet changing

Single duvets are absolutely big enough for one person. I think a double duvet each would be really cumbersome.

HellofromJohnCraven · 01/01/2025 21:28

We've had a superking for donkeys years and would never swap. But in our current house, if we had a smaller bed, we could fit a proper run of wardrobes along the longest wall. Instead we have ikea kallax and fabric boxes for our clothes.
Not quite the grownup vibe I was after!

rosiebl · 01/01/2025 23:19

One word of warning with a superking. If an Ottoman one, choose one with a great warranty or opt for a normal base. We've just had to change the base after 5 years because the ottoman bars bowed over time.
I clean the headboard every so often with the handheld part on the carpet cleaner.

Illinoise · 01/01/2025 23:22

We have a super king and when we stay at friend’s houses we really struggle with a double now! I love our bed!

FriendofDorothy · 01/01/2025 23:24

I love my superking bed.

One thing to consider is mattress depth. We have a lovely comfortable mattress but are having to buy extra deep super king sheets which aren’t that readily available and are pretty expensive!!

Heelworkhero · 01/01/2025 23:31

My DH slept separately for years until we got our super king. Now he’s in with me. Not much room for anything else in the room of our new build.
i have my own double duvet. He prefers his single.

JC03745 · 01/01/2025 23:36

I don't book a hotel/AirBNB if it doesn't have a minimum of a King sized bed!

HilariousNames · 01/01/2025 23:38

We have one. I stupidly got an Ottoman and it’s so bloody heavy you can’t move it to hoover . I have no idea how we’ll ever get it out of the house. I like the size of it but hate the fact it can’t be moved or taken apart easily..

ShinySquirrel · 01/01/2025 23:39

My top tip is NOT to buy a super king coverless duvet that doesn't fit in your washing machine. I bought it to make changing the bed easier, but not being able to wash it at home entirely defeats the point.

Other than that, and all the other things mentioned on the thread, go for it! We've had a super king for about ten years. The availablity of bedding has massively improved in that time as well.

Talkinpeace · 01/01/2025 20:53

King (5 foot 6 wide)
and then make sure you have a 4 foot 6 double in another room for the nights when you need LOTS of space
and the German approach of separate duvets is not to be under rated

I think a King is 5 ft...a 5 ft 6 would have to be bespoke?

Shithole101 · 01/01/2025 23:45

I have a superking me and ex are fat 😅 and we needed the room. Its only me now. But I still love it as ityer have said 2 single duvets it's much easier. I cant lift the super kind duvet

etonmessedup · 01/01/2025 23:45

We got a super king in the summer and I could never go back! We slept in a standard double at a hotel recently and I felt like I was back at uni sharing a single bed.

FoxRedPuppy · 01/01/2025 23:50

DP has a superking and it is amazing.

I'm really intrigued as to how a headboard could get smelly or stained? Unless you have a particular interesting sex life 😂
