Super king bed

WidgetDigit2022 · 01/01/2025 20:30

Hi! So we’re finding our double too small and I’m looking and kings and super kings.

Beyond the measurements, are there any considerations you think I should be taking on board before purchasing?

Also - what are your views on fabric headboards? I’ve only ever had wood and I’m worried it may stain and get smelly over time, does that happen?!

Thanks

I miss my superking sleigh bed. I'm in a double now and have to sleep diagonally. If you have the space, do it.

Jellybelly2025 · 02/01/2025 00:10

I love my super king, but the mattress is extremely heavy to lift and change the sheets (my husband had to help) and we barely have any room left in our bedroom.

I wouldn't down size though.

AnotherDayAnotherIdea · 02/01/2025 00:11

Doubles are very small for two people. Before I lost my job I bought a 7ft wide mattress. It wasn't expensive compared to a super king.

We don't have anything else in the room apart from built in wardrobes.

We have super king and it's the best thing we've ever bought. I wouldn't ever have a smaller bed. It fits all of us in so when the kids are sick it's easy to let them in and still have lots of space. Do it you won't regret it. Although even if it is a divan bed I would pay to get it built as they have to then get it upstairs. Depending on your stair height it can be quite hard to get up the stairs xx

I have a super king and would never go back to a smaller bed.

We just have one superking duvet but I'm surprised by the posters saying two single duvets on the bed though, single duvet is tiny, surely it would be 2 doubles if having two?!

I could probably get on board with two double duvets instead of one big one. I'm short and struggle with the duvet changing

We use 2 double quilts. My husband likes to cuddle quilts so even in a double bed I'd have my own quilt 🤣

Didntask · 02/01/2025 00:29

Get king-size pillows as well.

rubberducksarebastards · 02/01/2025 00:38

Absolutely a super king bed. And arms like popeye because changing the duvet cover is a pain in the arse and when I have my winter duvet on its a 2 person job. I brought the bed when the kids were still routinely getting in bed with me and I was sick and tired of ending up with a postage stamps worth of room.

Also, depending on how big your washing machine/tumble dryer is, you may find that it doesn't always spin properly and when tumble drying it just screws it up in a ball instead of actually doing anything like actually drying the duvet.

ElderLemon · 02/01/2025 03:09

Superking with two single duvets is the way to go. Two duvets is amazing. You can have different togs plus DH doesn't tug the duvet off me when he turns. No cold valley in the middle either.

And singles are perfectly big enough.

ohyesherewego · 02/01/2025 03:26

We love our super king and it does dominate our room..

We had massive issues getting it up the stairs to the point the delivery guys said it wouldn't fit it is impossible.

Even after we got our frame up the stairs by deboxing snd taking about the ottoman section (which fyi makes it more chunky ) the mattress itself then took 4 strong guys to manhandle up the stairs (and ruined all the paintwork all up the stairs and walls in the process)

Crunchymum · 02/01/2025 08:03

I love mine but it is huge.

We have a massive main bedroom but the bed takes up a lot of room. Which is fine but there is no option to reconfigure. However we are going to swap rooms with DD's soon so the bed will have to go as it won't fit in the smaller bedrooms.

DurhamDurham · 02/01/2025 08:28

We've a super king bed, it's wonderful. Several years ago I would have said that a downside was sourcing decent bedding but there's so much more availability now that's no longer an issue.

We do struggle when we're away from home and have to share a standard double bed, they seem v small. We never sleep well when out of our usual bed.

PigInADuvet · 02/01/2025 08:31

Be aware that once you have a super king there is no going back! We won't even entertain a holiday booking with a double bed now, kingsize is a minimum 🤣

In terms of headboards if you have kids, I'd go metal or wood. Things get spilt, kids are sick etc. Easily cleanable. We have a cast iron super king-size bed. Heavy as hell, but we'll never need to buy another bed ever again. Love it!

Netcam · 02/01/2025 08:46

We have a superking that we got from Warren Evans a couple of years ago. We got a zip and link, as the superking mattress wouldn't have made it up the stairs. We are very happy with it.

The base came in sections which we put together ourselves following their instructions. Again, we are very happy with it.

Our bedroom is fairly small but it all just fits with just enough space around to get to wardrobes/chests of drawers. But we are still glad to have lots of space in bed.

FinallyHere · 02/01/2025 08:50

@HereLiesBetelgeuse

Yes, we have two double duvets

Easy to change and means that all the covers fit our duvets and the duvet in the spare room.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/01/2025 09:01

I have one. They're perfect for families with young children. The main disadvantage is the ridiculous cost of bedding and the hassle changing the bed.

We don't have anything else in the room apart from built in wardrobes.

My FIL has a bee in his bonnet about bed and room sizes. Commented that we wouldn't be able to fit two bedside tables in with our king-size. We had to pick ones on the narrower side, but otherwise fine.

And at theirs they've only put a double in the spare room with a very soft bouncy mattress. But there's acres of room on either side, though just one bedside table ("wouldn't fit another"). As a result staying over is hugely uncomfortable and we haven't in two years.

I literally went sober for NYE in 2023 because I couldn't face a night of each of us waking at the slightest movement.

My parents are almost as bad, except their double guest bed feels like it's made of bricks.

Both sides are constantly redecorating, refurbing, and asking us how we want the guest room, but are nixing the one thing that would actually make staying tolerable!

YogaLite · 02/01/2025 09:29

I bought a fabric covered headboard for super king from a company that makes them up north and it was less than £100. They advertise on eBay. So unless your bed comes with it, you could look there otherwise they can be many hundreds £.

PinkTonic · 02/01/2025 10:00

Super king and two single duvets is a game changer. We each have our own duvet preference. I have a fabric headboard from Loaf and I vacuum it, so no issues there.

Lanawashington · 02/01/2025 10:07

tweddler · 01/01/2025 20:42

Superking with a single duvet each is the way.
Still lovely and cosy, but easier to change the bedding and less chance of waking the other in the night.

This is what we do too. A duvet each as we both like different togs. And I always find that two single duvet covers are much cheaper than one superking cover

sortmyselfoutagain · 01/01/2025 20:37

Changing the duvet cover really is a 2 man job. If you’ve got the room I’d definitely recommend it. DH and I have just returned from holiday where we had a double bed and I really did miss our superking. If we had a double at home we’d probably be in separate rooms by now 🤣

No issues with fabric headboard at all.

I’ve often changed our superking duvet cover on my own - but with the aid of 4 giant plastic clothes pegs - the sort that’s used to stop beach towels blowing away. Mine cost about £3.99 from Amazon.

You feed one corner of the duvet into a bottom corner of the cover, secure with clothes peg, repeat with the other bottom corner.
Repeat with top corners.
Give a good shake, button up, shake again from the bottom.

Admittedly it’s a bit easier if dh is there to help instead of clothes pegs, though!

As for headboards, I don’t like them so we don’t have any.

What a great idea!

One thing to consider is mattress depth. We have a lovely comfortable mattress but are having to buy extra deep super king sheets which aren’t that readily available and are pretty expensive!!

@Is2025theyearofthedog how deep is your mattress? These John Lewis ones are described as deep and not extra deep but they’ve been the best value we have found, and haven’t shrunk on washing.

Caspianberg · 02/01/2025 11:45

We have superking

Bought from button and sprung. It’s great. The base is in two halves so had no problems getting in in tiny flat lift, then shipped abroad, then up new house old stairs. The mattress folds a bit for folding up stairs temporarily

Also have child who hates sleeping in own bed, so it’s been large enough the three of us can easily beds share for years

SanFranByAir · 02/01/2025 11:48

We have one. The base is two European singles (Ikea), so easy to move house with. The mattress is a Superking, but partly has the components of two singles. Unfortunately Ikea no longer does this style of mattress.
We have two double quilts (a quilt each is the secret to marital bliss!) and a thin Superking duvet we throw over the top which is just decorative (and spends most of its life chucked on a chair ).
No issues with making the bed, not sure why you would have. Sheets are Ikea or TKMaxx. I mainly only buy white bedding.
No headboard, I'm not a fan.
