Little things that make you happy.

Thought I'd start a nice, light hearted thread about things that make you happy! I notice a lot of light hearted threads end up a bit down in the dumps, so for those who just want to share, need a bit of cheer, or are generally nosy parkers (like me! 😂), I thought this could be a bit of fun.

I'll start (and try and make it brief!)

  • Family. Yes, yes, twee, sickly, blah blah blah, but it's true.
  • Christmas. Festivities and seasons changing in general.
  • Books! Give me a good book, a nice box of tea, and I'm happy.
  • Cheese. Any cheese. My DS had a milk allergy as a youngster and I had to cut it out too as I was breastfeeding. God I missed cheese. I celebrated so hard with a cheeseboard when he passed the milk ladder that I made myself poorly. 😂
  • Flowers in my window. I love watching how the light changes the shades of the petals during the day.
  • A good black comedy. Anything Shearsmith and Pemberton does me.
  • Oversized men's sweatshirts. Fuck women's jumpers, men's are the way to go and I will die on this hill.

Off to make some sarnies to take to MiL's - v. interested to hear other people's little joys!

The first cup of tea of the day. Red wine. An afternoon nap. Jam on toast. Seeing my adult children laughing together.

Jam on toast. It's been years since I've had that for some reason, it was my Dad's favourite food. He'd always get the Hartley's blackcurrant. Your last one tugged my heartstrings as I'm a soppy sod. That's the dream.

A great idea for a thread.

Family. A good muddy walk. First flowers of spring. Curling up on the sofa with a cuppa. Christmas

Shoxfordian · 01/01/2025 15:17

Egg and chips. Spending time with my parents. Saturday morning crosswords in bed with dh. Sleeping.

It's nice at this time of year, I think we can get a bit distracted or glum the season is ending so I'd hoped it would be fun!

Bloody love a muddy walk! When we were kids, my brother somehow always got his wellies filled with water. Dad would pull them off as he sat on the stairs and he'd drench the hall. Now I do it for DS and it's just lovely.

Yes to egg and chips! Do you have beans too? This was my favourite growing up. The DC turn their noses up to it and I'm outraged.

A pedicure and new fluffy socks (not white ones).

AirFriar · 01/01/2025 15:21

Soap! Bar soap, handwash, cheap or expensive I just love it all! I have loads of different ones and change them regularly and I get all excited when I get new ones. When I went to Harrogate and stumbled upon the Yorkshire Soap Company shop I was in heaven.

whatisforteamum · 01/01/2025 15:22

My cute furry alarm clock.my ginger cat
Strong black coffee
Walking in nature
Finding a nice chocolate in my pocket unexpectedly.😊

RabbitsRock · 01/01/2025 15:24

AirFriar have you looked in TK Maxx? The soaps in there are so beautifully packaged. I even got one in a wind up musical box! Strangely I tend to use liquid soap but love buying bars.

Joyfulincolour · 01/01/2025 15:24

Very soft fleece blankets, Earl Grey tea, reading books and afternoon naps.....bliss.

Lorrymum · 01/01/2025 15:24

New socks, fresh out of packet.
Clean bedding.
Markies prawn sandwich.
My dog sitting on my knee, snoring gently.

CromwellsCrumpet · 01/01/2025 15:24

Waking up early before DC's and watching adult tv at 5am with tea and my candles on.

A good history podcast on my commute.

My job. Corny I know but it's what I'm good at.

Playing board games with DS.

Drawing with DD.

Researching a holiday. I think I like it more than going!

Getting a proper coffee from my local cafe.

anrom1969 · 01/01/2025 15:26

Yes yes to your children laughing together, the sound of my adult son and daughter laughing and talking has brought me so much joy this Christmas. It melts my heart. I believe that even when the chips are well and truly down there is always a little something to be grateful for.

God, that's so strange! I read your comment "jam on toast", and thought "yes, but it has to be blackcurrant!" Then your following words! My dad died end of 2023, so it just resonated, except his favourite was shredless marmalade!

CharliesAngles · 01/01/2025 15:28

A simple vase of daffodils!😉

Lovely thread @GiddyRobin

Others include my DCs "jamming" together on their instruments.

DH just walking into the room, catches my eye and then gives me a lop sided dimpled smile (even after 30 odd years together that gets me every time)

Good food, family and friends!

overthinkersanonnymus · 01/01/2025 15:28

A clean house and then sitting in silence with a coffee for 20 mins.

RabbitsRock · 01/01/2025 15:29

Good idea for a thread OP. Little things that make me happy:-
Cuppa, especially made by my DH
Getting into a freshly changed bed
Starting a brand new diary or notebook
Expensive writing paper etc
Shopping on my own ( actually, doing quite a few things on my own!)
Improvising on my piano
A vase of roses
Being with my bunnies
Giggling over something daft with DH or DD16
Writing a meal list for the week ahead & lists generally
Charity shops

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 01/01/2025 15:30

A lovely cup of tea
Sex
The cat purring on my shoulder or showing me his fluffy bum to scratch at his tail
A big poo
Writing on quality paper in a book with a fancy cover with a beautiful fountain pen
Banter with my young teens
Pie, mash and gravy on a cold and stormy day
Pulling my soft blanket over me on the settee at night when reading

SpicyMarge · 01/01/2025 15:33

A few months ago, a little kitten was blown into our field during a storm. We live very rurally and tried to find where he came from, but no luck so he’s joined the family.

When he sits on my lap, he crosses his front paws. This makes me so happy and I have no idea why.

Little things that make you happy.
violetcuriosity · 01/01/2025 15:35

Watching DD9 and DD1 interacting and building a bond.

Sitting in our cosy local pub drinking wine after a park walk.

Snatching a brief moment of calm during the school day with the other 2 members of SLT ending up cry laughing about something ridiculous before continuing with the daily slog.

Fresh bed sheets.

My daughters being wild in the bath together.

A homemade spag Bol with disgusting amounts of extra mature cheddar.

BigDahliaFan · 01/01/2025 15:36

Going back to bed with a cup of tea in the morning. Not every morning, but when I do it's a treat.

Alltheburpees · 01/01/2025 15:36

Finding a book in the library that I’ve really wanted to read.
Watching my DH cook while I sit and chat with a glass of wine.
Collecting my DGD from school and seeing her eyes light up as she runs to me.
My electric blanket on a chilly night.
Buying early daffs with the shopping.
I’m sure there are many other things.

BigDahliaFan · 01/01/2025 15:36

Watching my dog walking along proudly when she's found a particularly good stick!

GiddyRobin · 01/01/2025 15:36

@Ladybyrd
I've never had a pedicure as my feet are so ugly and ruined from ballet and running. Are they nice? I'm always tempted to buy one of those bubble bowl things for feet though - less embarrassing. 😂

@AirFriar Try looking for Aimasi on Amazon - they do all sorts but their lavender soap is absolutely to die for! Is the Yorkshire Soap Company literally a shop dedicated entirely to soap? Because if so this sounds glorious.

@whatisforteamum A furry alarm clock! 😲 Between that and a ginger cat, I don't know what's best! We've got a half ginge and he's mental. Love the nutcase.

@Joyfulincolour I'm usually an Earl Grey fan too, but this year I was given a box of Lady Grey and I now worry for my teeth with the amount I can see myself consuming.

@Lorrymum I bloody love a prawn sarnie. We made prawn cocktail for Christmas and it's just so refreshing! Not a huge fan of Gregg's ones though - too thin and miserly!

@CromwellsCrumpet I've been trying to get into podcasts! Do you listen on Spotify?

@anrom1969 It's the most beautiful thing and it literally warms my cockles to hear these stories of adult children still keeping that closeness! It's so, so special and makes the hard moments worth it when you're in the thick of childhood with them.

@SleeplikeababyTonight So sorry for your loss - mine passed in 2018 and it's still raw, but it's little things like this that really make me smile. Hahaha! Mine had to have it shredless too otherwise it "sticks to me gums". 😂 This is such a lovely little reminder!

@CharliesAngles Oh this made me smile. 30 years and the grin still does it. Absolutely so cheeky but adorable. 😁 I love the DC jamming too! Do they play guitar? Mine won't touch it, they're such snobs. Violin and piano. <huff> 😂 I jest, of course.

Okay, there's more to reply to but I need to make these sarnies! DH slipped Bailey's into my coffee and we've got to walk to MIL's, so I'll be back when I'm ensconced. 😁
