Little things that make you happy.

Thought I'd start a nice, light hearted thread about things that make you happy! I notice a lot of light hearted threads end up a bit down in the dumps, so for those who just want to share, need a bit of cheer, or are generally nosy parkers (like me! 😂), I thought this could be a bit of fun.

I'll start (and try and make it brief!)

  • Family. Yes, yes, twee, sickly, blah blah blah, but it's true.
  • Christmas. Festivities and seasons changing in general.
  • Books! Give me a good book, a nice box of tea, and I'm happy.
  • Cheese. Any cheese. My DS had a milk allergy as a youngster and I had to cut it out too as I was breastfeeding. God I missed cheese. I celebrated so hard with a cheeseboard when he passed the milk ladder that I made myself poorly. 😂
  • Flowers in my window. I love watching how the light changes the shades of the petals during the day.
  • A good black comedy. Anything Shearsmith and Pemberton does me.
  • Oversized men's sweatshirts. Fuck women's jumpers, men's are the way to go and I will die on this hill.

Off to make some sarnies to take to MiL's - v. interested to hear other people's little joys!

Oh this is so lovely.

Dogs & Chocolate would be my first choices but will be reading and nodding!

Chocolate123 · 01/01/2025 18:36

Clean bed sheets and pjs
Not having to set an alarm clock for morning
A sunny day
A hug from my OH
A good book

Frangywangywoowah · 01/01/2025 18:37

My dog

BloodyHellBob · 01/01/2025 18:39

The smile on DS face when he's achieved something.
Clean bedclothes, pyjamas and a cold bedroom.
Rain against the windows when I'm tucked up inside.
I exercise with a brilliant group of women, outside in all weather, all year round and when the weather is bad, I get such a sense of achievement for turning up and getting on with it.
The house to myself sometimes!

Fab idea for a thread @GiddyRobin Grin

Turning on the TV on a rainy January morning to discover my favourite ever film is available to stream!

Like PP, first cup of tea in the morning, sitting with the sun on my face, running on a cold, crisp day and hugs from my children. Also a tidy house when I finally sit down in the evening, and getting into a bed with freshly changed sheets.

GiddyRobin · 01/01/2025 19:02

I really love how things like the smell of plants outside are so nice for so many of you. It's one of my favourite things, too - when the heat hits them early on in the morning during spring and summer, and you get that scent of things growing. Or conversely, in winter when everything is fading but you can smell earth and cold and it's time to collect things.

@Ihopeyouhavent This is so nice. I hope my kids still come and lie with me at that age! This brought a little tear to my eye.

And yes to outdoor exercise in all weather's, @BloodyHellBob ! We've been outdoor swimming in freezing temps while I've been in Norway, but it's doing it with friends that really makes it worthwhile! I've got a friend who lives in Ireland, and she goes swimming in the sea every morning. I'm not a strong enough swimmer for that, but she bloody loves it!

@ohyesido Agreed! This is how I discovered Jeremy Brett's Holmes. Long January days, stuck the telly on, saw him and that was it! Can't have Christmas without him now. 😂

Sorry I'm not replying to all, I'm in agreement with every one of you! I love how this thread has turned out, it's really made me smile and I've finally got MiL to join MN. 😁 Now to trudge back in the snow and get warm! (Maybe a mulled wine...not too late for that, is it?!)

I should add - candles. She bought me this beautiful box of scented candles. They don't smell false at all either. Absolutely amazing.

Little things that make you happy.

Book shops & reading with a cup of coffee
Fresh flowers especially in spring
Being in my campervan
New notebook or stationery especially stickers
Time to sit and craft or doodle
Spending time with adult DCs
Autumn leaves
Getting letters from penpels
New bed sheets & pjs
Playing a board game with adult DC
Watching a movie as family
Easter

You have penpals! You like stickers and stationery!

Mine: coming across beautiful stationery ( for letter-writing) unexpectedly like in a charity shop or department store

Receiving happy mail ( from penpals)

Sitting in my king size bed in a hotel typing this!

PollyOrange · 01/01/2025 19:12

Saving this to cheer me up before tomorrow and the return to work !

Abracadabra12345 · 01/01/2025 19:20

Where is everyone buying their stationary? I need some new stuff but I'm not sure where to browse this year. I also have pen pals as a pp said so adore lovely paper and pens!

@GiddyRobin - Etsy is your friend! Although, once you start down that rabbit hole, you may never return. Making Meadows is the best for paper and littlenoahsark has beautiful address labels

Stationery gives me joy!

I love these long, dark nights and when I step outside before dawn to see starry skies and feel clean, cold air on my skin

Ahhh you wonderful person! Thank you! I didn't even think of Etsy, and normally it's my go-to for things like gifts or mugs, etc. Some beautiful jewellery on there too, I have to say. I love the bookish stuff!

There's nothing nicer sometimes than sitting down with some fresh writing paper. DH bought me a quill a few years ago so I'd love to get the hang of that.

And absolutely! It makes things like a warm jumper or a scarf feel precious, which sounds silly but it just adds to little comforts. Like the world is getting ready for something but not quite there yet. Also! I hope your hotel stay is lovely! Is it anywhere fancy?

I love all of yours OP.

Listening to DS17 & DD19 chat.
Feeling the dog curled up behind my knees as I nap on the sofa.
A nice coffee and marzipan choc bar.
Quiet.
Walking up the lane and seeing all the nature in our doorstep.
Our old house. It's a money pit and a bit of a shit hole but it makes me smile and I'll never regret the move. Although I really should. 😁
Moomins.
A lovely bookmark.
Freshly washed bedding.
DH's humour and good naturedness.
Christmas.

DH’s humour and good naturedness is so lovely to say and totally resonates with me. Thank you

My bean to cup machine.

DH bringing me a cup of tea in bed every morning.

My beautiful rescue dog - she'd lived in a tiny concrete yard and slept in a bare shed. Seeing her stretched out on the settee or in front of the fire makes me so happy. She adores her raised bed as well - when we put a fresh piece of bedding on she actually wriggles with excitement before getting on and groaning with happiness.

Fresh bedding.

Sunrise and sunset.

Freshly baked scones

A new book on my kindle

Watching the birds of prey soar above our garden

Skeins of geese flying overhead

Crackers4cheese · 01/01/2025 19:39

Not having to get up and being able to take a tea back to bed and read my book. Bliss

Can you recommend a brand of bean to cup? We grind ours at the moment but this sounds great! And your little dog! What kind is she? It's the most lovely thing seeing them go from that to happy, comfortable, relaxed dogs. Our Irish wolfhound was in a bad way when we got him, we think he'd been used for fighting, but he's the sweetest, dopiest boy and gets on so well with our old collie.

And geese. ❤️ I still scream for everyone to come and watch when I see them now.

Best feeling in the world. Do you like herbal tea? I'm obsessed with Bird & Blend, they make some amazing mixes and the shops are brilliant! Like a tea spa!

A lovely cup of tea
Sex
The cat purring on my shoulder or showing me his fluffy bum to scratch at his tail
A big poo
Writing on quality paper in a book with a fancy cover with a beautiful fountain pen
Banter with my young teens
Pie, mash and gravy on a cold and stormy day
Pulling my soft blanket over me on the settee at night when reading

Haha yes. Definitely a big poo when you really really need one ☺️

Also

Fresh bedding combined with clean hair and a lie in

Egg on toast

That feeling when you step on a plane and know you have a whole holiday to look forward to

Going to the library and finding lots of lovely new books to read

Beautiful scenery. Mountains. Sea. Countryside. I'm down.

Gorgeous skies

Looking at the stars

Drinking wine and cooking risotto at the same time.

That feeling when you really gel with someone and have the feeling that person is going to become really special to you.

Dogs. Any dogs.

Cats. Any cats.

Guinea pigs. All of them!

A fluffy blanket and a box set on a rainy day

Golden hour on the beach.

TimothyIsNotAnArmardillo · 01/01/2025 19:50

@GiddyRobin

I have a De'Longhi Rivelia - it's my favourite gadget.

The dog is a Rottweiler cross. A great clumphing gorgeous soppy girl. We love her. I've never had a dog so grateful for everything.

LunaNorth · 01/01/2025 19:50

My horse. She’s a dream come true (although something of a stroppy mare) and I honestly can’t get the smile off my face when we achieve something together, however small.

A good, clear night sky.

A paperback book. Perfect piece of design, never runs out of battery, you can take it anywhere, weighs next to nothing and contains worlds.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 01/01/2025 19:52

Oh and seeing the first crocuses and feeling like I am coming out of a dark cocoon

Knitting. The kids not fighting too much these holidays (we seem to have developed a nice little routine each day and they are much more rested with no school).
