That Robbie Williams as a monkey film

Better Man.

I was watching some clips from Sydney last night that reminded me that actually I like Robbie Williams and I heard the film was really good but I'm not sure I can get over the monkey thing.

Has anyone seen it? Why is he a monkey and is it really distracting or do you just get into it?

Everyone I know who's seen it say it's great. Doesn't appeal to me tbh cos of the whole monkey thing

BrieHugger · 01/01/2025 13:42

Bit weird. Think I’d watch most of it with my eyes shut.

Clearinguptheclutter · 01/01/2025 13:43

Mark Kermode was pretty positive about it. He said you forget about the monkey element within five minutes

RebeccaDecember · 01/01/2025 13:45

Apparently he’s a monkey in the film as he always felt "less evolved than other people."

I find Robbie Williams a bit annoying but I love a music biography and I LOVE Steve Pemberton so I am slightly intrigued..

Longma · 01/01/2025 13:45

I saw it a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it. Dh, who isn't really a RW fan and only came because he was going with me and dd, also really enjoyed it. All the reviews we've seen online for it have been really good too.

It is explained elsewhere online why he is portrayed as a monkey.

Tbh after a while you don't really notice he is the only one in animal form anyway.

BusySittingDown · 01/01/2025 13:46

Why's he a monkey though? Is it a metaphor?

The choreography looks good and there's a great cast but yes, the fact that he's a monkey puts me off. It's odd!

LunchtimeNaps · 01/01/2025 13:46

I've seen it and it's excellent. It's easy to get past the monkey thing. Laughed cried and sang through it.

Yes, he still feels as if he is the 15/16 year old he was when he first became famous. As though he stopped developing at that point.

'Performing monkey' thoughts
'Cheeky monkey' persona
And all those kind of 'money/chimp' type connotations.

Ah yes, that makes sense!

Saw it the other day and wasn't sure how would be but you get used to it very quickly and it oddly works very well! Think also you're not seeing a actor and comparing them to him look wise and that why it also works.

Some beautiful dances and scenes in it as well. Worth seeing

comedycentral · 01/01/2025 14:09

A chimpanzee is a strange choice if he wants to play a monkey though, did none of his researchers actually point out it's an ape not a monkey? 😁

Good point that you're not distracted by comparing the actor playing the part to the actual person. If you forget that it's a monkey, do you still remember that it's Robbie?

Are Take That in it, or is it post that era?

The monkey thing puts me off too

I love Robbie

Yeah because it's his voice. Think if someone else had done the voice then it would've been different.

Yaaaa there's Take That bits.

Not really a huge fan went cause it looked interesting and just kind of lost in the story. Mainly because some are pretty.. and kind of arty. It did drag a bit in places but also very awwww

HPandthelastwish · 01/01/2025 14:38

Robbie has explained the Monkey thing, and has an album/song Me and my Monkey, monkey on his back being his drug addiction / relationship with drugs / relationship with his monkey.

I think it's interesting and a clever way of including Robbie init who is obviously substantially older now without having another actor playing him, and shows how far cinematography has come since Planet of the Apes which was ground breaking in its day

MaryGreenhill · 01/01/2025 14:45

My daughter went with her Boyfriend and they absolutely loved it .

fanaticalfairy · 01/01/2025 14:46

Oh, I saw the promo shot and thought it was a Planet of The Apes film... Didn't know it was the Robbie Williams one ...

noblegiraffe · 01/01/2025 19:35

Ah I think him doing the voice of the monkey does make a difference.

He’s just so self involved/obsessed as a person…I can imagine he’s such hard work for Aida

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 01/01/2025 19:53

I went with my friend on Monday and even as a Robbie fan I was bemused by the monkey aspect. It is explained though and we both found it incredible.

She seems as much of a c**t as he is tbh.

As for the monkey film, its racist towards monkeys.

I assumed in the film everyone just acted like he wasn't a monkey and no mention was ever made of it.

@noblegiraffe He sees himself like that, he does a voiceover saying words to that effect, Nobody else can see it.
