That Robbie Williams as a monkey film

Better Man.

I was watching some clips from Sydney last night that reminded me that actually I like Robbie Williams and I heard the film was really good but I'm not sure I can get over the monkey thing.

Has anyone seen it? Why is he a monkey and is it really distracting or do you just get into it?

Thanks @whydoesitalwayshappentome I think that will make the film make a lot more sense tbh.

A chimpanzee is a strange choice if he wants to play a monkey though, did none of his researchers actually point out it's an ape not a monkey? 😁

I came on here to say that! A chimp is an ape (no tail!), like us, not a monkey.

MrsMorrisey · 01/01/2025 22:02

His performance on NYE was so self indulgent and self promoting.
Most of the time he got the crowd to sing then got annoyed with a fan cos he stuffed up. I reckon he should have a rest for a bit.
I like him but this was bad. And he shouldn't have done a John Far ham song either.
I'm not seeing the movie. The monkey thing is odd.

He’s just so self involved/obsessed as a person…I can imagine he’s such hard work for Aida

this!

Psychoticbreak · 01/01/2025 22:23

I assumed it was for two reasons, one because that is how he sees himself with his addictions and as a messer/monkey type persona but also its about HIM not take that so i am sure the lads of TT could sue him. It is almost like a baby reindeer situation. Robbie imo is a narcissist anyway. I cant stand him personally.

noblegiraffe · 01/01/2025 22:23

His performance on NYE was so self indulgent and self promoting.

But that's his whole thing? No one liked him because he shy and humble.

I'm not sure about that. People like or dislike people for a number of reasons.
Did you watch his performance?
He is doing a free concert in Melbourne today too.

purpleme12 · 02/01/2025 09:32

So he's doing free concerts in Australia but charging the world for concerts here?!?

I'd love to go see him 😞

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/01/2025 09:35

He’s portrayed as a chimpanzee, not a monkey 🤷🏻‍♀️

They’re not interchangeable.

It puts me off watching because it irritates me so much 😆

Feel very silly now as I told everyone I’d seen him as a gorilla as that’s what I thought it was. Obviously wrong, guess I thought that as ‘he/it’ was more person sized standing up and I’ve always thought chimps smaller in stature. But, yeah, it’s a chimp🤦‍♀️.

ETA- all that aside, I thought it was really good.

I've seen bits of it on YouTube. I saw an extremely experienced performer working the crowd and putting on a great show despite what looked like a very cheap production?

If you're surprised/disappointed that Robbie is either self-indulgent or self-promoting may I remind you of the video he made where he pretended to be James Bond? And his album called The Ego Has Landed?

Same.

It's superb. I didn't know what to expect it found it visually stunning in parts, clever, funny, moving and original. It deserves to win awards.
It actually isn't his voice for all of it. A singer called Adam Tucker was used for his younger vocals. He's superb and sounds exactly like him. He sings She's the one and Angels for example.

I've seen it with my partner and we both loved it. The chimp idea makes it easier to see him as Robbie rather than looking at the actor as somebody else stated. Robbie does a voice over throughout it but the voice of the chimp is the actor himself. As for getting annoyed at a fan during the concert in Australia, it was a fan he recognised from previous shows (I've seen their comment on a Robbie fan page stating this) she was fully aware it was a joke and had a laugh about it too.
I've met Robbie last year and I can assure you he was kind, caring and extremely funny towards his fans. You can tell he is grateful for them all.

KnutsfordCityLimits · 04/01/2025 06:45

The other reason I read from the director was that people tend to be more sympathetic to animals than they are to humans!

We loved it too, especially the rock DJ sequence.

Paperdolly · 04/01/2025 07:18

I wasn’t a particular fan of RW but after my daughter recommended it I went along. I thought it was really good and I understood the journey that he’s been on to get where he is now. Credit to him he recognises he behaves like an entitled c**t. You could see the influence that the director of The Greatest Showman had on the group choreography and I loved it for that.

rookiemere · 04/01/2025 07:33

I thought it works really well and elevates the film above what it actually is. If you reduce it down to its constituent parts there isn't much to it, but I was in buckets of tears at the sad parts and loved the dance sequences.
It would have been tricky for an actor to portray Robbie Williams and I loved the expressions that the CGI animal had.

Appalonia · 09/06/2025 18:30

I watched it on my very long flight back from Thailand last week and I absolutely loved it. I'm not really a big fan of RW, but the film was so well done, had me laughing and crying a lot. It's very honest about his feelings about himself, his difficult relationship with his dad, his constant need to prove himself and how fame almost destroyed him. I actually wished I'd seen it at the cinema, as the musical numbers are spectacular. I think it's just dropped on Netflix, I highly recommend it, even if you're not a RW fan, it's way better than Rocketman or the film about Freddie mercury tbh.

Lilactimes · 09/06/2025 18:35

I really loved it. It’s brilliantly made and you forget he’s a monkey… face animation is incredible and is just him.

Lilactimes · 09/06/2025 18:36

I think the VO is an actor and he sings too.

Crinkle77 · 09/06/2025 18:37

I thought Robbie said he felt like a performing monkey in Take That and that's he is portrayed as a monkey/ape whatever.

ARainyNightInSoho · 09/06/2025 18:40

I’m not a RW fan and thought the monkey idea was weird and off putting. I went to see the film when we were on holiday, it was raining and there was nothing else to do. I was totally won over! It’s the best film I have seen in a very long time. You get used to the monkey very quickly and it really makes sense. The film is so creative, imaginative, visually interesting, funny and hugely entertaining.

I don’t know anyone who didn’t think the film was great. I don’t think it got the recognition it deserved. Perhaps because people didn’t understand the monkey idea and didn’t bother to go. And RW is hardly known in the US. But anyway, go!

MaryGreenhill · 09/06/2025 18:45

We went to see it when it came out and we were unsure but it was excellent.
