What's the longest you've been without a haircut?

I've just realised I haven't had my hair cut for a VERY long time. Does it matter though?

About 10 years. I've always had very long hair but I don't let it get beyond waist length now becsuse my hair is getting thinner now I'm older.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 21/12/2024 20:49

11 year and counting! And no, it doesn't look great, but I've got properly shit hair, and it doesn't look any better with regular trims. And I can't face the inevitable comments from the hairdresser about what dreadful condition it's in, and am I sure I don't want to do something about all those greys etc etc.

I do occasionally go at it myself with the kitchen scissors.... 🤷‍♀️

I quite like my natural greys
They are only around my fringe and hairline and look like natural highlights
First time in 40 years I've had natural hair colour and I don't mind it

I’m a Sikh, so I don’t generally cut mine, I had to cut it about six years ago as I had a scalp injury and the area that needed shaving was in my parting so it looked awful and stood out. It hasn’t been cut since. I was 16 the first time my hair was ever cut.

So obviously Sikh men wear their hair in a turban, but how do Sikh women manage their long hair then? I've never really thought about this!

Genuinely don't understand how some people go every 6 weeks.

Longest two years, right now has been a year and I’d love to be pampered at the hairdressers but it’ll be a few months before can afford

Growlybear83 · 21/12/2024 21:06

Ten years, and 22 before the last visit to a hairdresser.

Ollybob · 21/12/2024 21:06

Pre covid for a proper cut although I have been to the local college a couple of times, it's under a tenner for a cut and blow dry.
Obviously done by students but they are closely supervised and regularly checked by the tutors whilst you're there.
Other than that I've cut my own hair, it's long so just needs the ends trimming.

SabreIsMyFave · 21/12/2024 21:06

@rosemole

I think that's why I haven't booked an appointment. I don't like the magazines, smell, waiting around, chit chat and looking in a mirror for ages at myself looking like a hag. 🤣

I know right... In my own mirror at home, I look like a 25 year old Pamela Anderson. But in the hairdresser's mirror......... Sad

Some Sikh mean wear a turban, I generally don’t unless its for a wedding or something. I wear mine down most of the time. As it was cut six years ago its just hitting mid torso so while its down most of the time I sometimes put it in a bun, ponytail or a plait. A lot of people have a maximum hair length, as a kid mine never really got beyond waist length, so I don’t think it will this time.

Nor me?

Wowwellokthen · 21/12/2024 21:12

About 10yr for me. Too expensive for me.
I box dye mine and cut it using kitchen scissors every 6 months or so.

@Simonjt that's interesting, reminds me of something I saw decades ago about how different hair types grow. Some hair has a limit I guess!

😂That's 100% what I look like in the hairdresser's mirror. A fecking toad! 🐸

rosemole · 21/12/2024 21:34

It's so true. Maybe they use circus mirrors

8 years.

Rummly · 21/12/2024 21:36

Years ago there was a craze on here for cutting your own hair. The technique is something like leaning forward, bunching the front of your hair in one hand and cutting in a straight line (that’s probably not quite right, but it’s roughly that).

I could always spot self-haircut MNers. They looked like llamas. And wore Breton stripe jumpers.

paddingtoncoffee · 21/12/2024 21:45

I went for years (probably four?) without a haircut, occasional trims with scissors at home. Was going to a birthday party and the hotel had a hairdresser on site. It was the north, and they agreed to do me a quick trim for a tenner, took away the dead ends and it's still long, but not as half dead looking. I could only stand the whole hairdresser experience as I was clearly not there for it. "You'll have to stand up as it's so long" etc

Don't know what the hell they do with those mirrors, but honestly it's spending twenty minutes looking at myself I want to avoid. And I can't hold my head straight, I always annoy them. Also when you ask where my parting is and then query if it can really be there, I'll either tell you I don't know, or double down

It's not their fault, it's mine. But I still can't stand it

rosemole · 21/12/2024 21:49

Oh lord yes the parting conversation. I hate having to tell them it's in the wrong place.
Why is it so stressful

I remember this. Did anyone actually do it on here? I've seen videos on insta or whatever but they don't look like MNers 😂

About 4 years now! Have cut a bit off the front but I wear it up all the time so resent paying so much for a trim!
