What's the longest you've been without a haircut?

I've just realised I haven't had my hair cut for a VERY long time. Does it matter though?

Does anyone use seaweed shampoo (realllly expensive)?

I have a shortish crop and generally have mine cut every 6 weeks. I adore my hairdresser - she's cut my hair since about 2000.

Longest for me is over COVID I guess. I looked like a Lego head.

Don't be ridiculous
Hairdressers are not there to look out for moles 😂😂

That's not true. A good hairdresser will tell you about anything odd they spot on your scalp -mine did.

I did the MN haircut about 8 years ago but I just got quite dizy hanging upside down and then it didn't really look like a haircut at the end.

this was the method:

TwinkleLights24 · 21/12/2024 22:07

However long they were closed in lockdown. I never go more than three months.

Printedword · 21/12/2024 22:08

About 14 months, I think. But I have long hair with fringe, so it can be maintained ok. Ideally, 4 times a year haircut is enough

WorriedRelative · 21/12/2024 22:09

A professional one? How long ago was 1996?

Funnywonder · 21/12/2024 22:20

I have been trimming the ends myself for years. I let my grey grow out so no colour needed. I absolutely hate going to the hairdresser's. The noise. The chit chat. Leaning backwards at the sink. Having my scalp touched. The feeling of my hair being tugged. The close proximity of someone's armpit. All of it. I really wish I loved it. I don't feel pampered. I feel tortured🤣

MidnightMeltdown · 21/12/2024 22:24

People go years?! If I did that I think it would be down to my ankles, it grows so fast!

I think the longest I've left it is 6 months.

rosemole · 21/12/2024 22:24

It's been so long I forgot about the whole sink shenanigans. Is the temperature alright, are you comfortable etc. and the weird head massage.

I don't have it so bad now because a lady comes to my house to do it. I wash my own hair under the kitchen tap, then I sit on a chair in the garden and she cuts my hair right there in the garden. It's quite nice really. She doesn't dry it, and after she is gone, I wash it under the tap again.

The cut is always pretty strange, but it beat the heck out of going to a hairdressers shop.

Sassybooklover · 21/12/2024 22:46

Around 6 months, during lockdown and salons couldn't open. In some ways it was a blessing in disguise, as I had an inverted bob - I wanted to grow it out, but would end up having it cut because I hated that 'inbetween stage'. Lockdown meant I had to just deal with the 'inbetween' stage, so the inverted bob grew out and now I have long hair again!!

fivebyfivebuffy · 21/12/2024 22:47

Years until I found a curly hairdresser I was happy with
I usually go every 9-12 months now

fivebyfivebuffy · 21/12/2024 22:49

Should add the reasons I like my hairdresser
You can face the mirror or not
He sits next to you to do the consultation
There's a dog (or not, you can request no dog!)
Coffee is good
No chat appointments
Feels like home, don't feel awkward going there

Oh you mean you don't have to talk to him looking at yourself in a mirror?! Wow. I like that. And the dog bit.

All these little reminders of the usual experience is really putting me off going again

About 5 years.

Was broke so stopped going to the salon for a while. Then covid happened and I developed eczema on the back of my head which never healed because the hair was so thick it was constantly warm and damp.

Every time I booked a new appointment a new lockdown was announced so I ended up giving myself a buzz cut (no 4) to just give my scalp some air. It worked and I gre back a lovely thick head of curls.

Only issue was I then developed alopecia. I feel like I jinxed myself 😒

Jaxhog · 21/12/2024 23:01

Longest time was 2 years during Covid. It looked horrible. I've got thin very fine hair so resent having to pay the same as someone with lovely thick hair. It takes no time at all to trim and blow dry so it seems very expensive for what I get.

SequoiaTree · 21/12/2024 23:04

I used to get it cut every 2 months before lockdown but more like 4 months now. My dds cut it in lockdown. They aren't hairdressers but they did quite well.

Scutterbug · 21/12/2024 23:05

About 5 years since I went to a salon. I just trim it myself

Dcbjgfdh · 21/12/2024 23:08

5 years for me, I hate going to the hairdressers. My hair now looks like candyfloss and I’m even more embarrassed to go!

menopausalfart · 21/12/2024 23:30

Has to be about 10 yes. I hate going to the hairdresser.

sueelleker · 21/12/2024 23:41

Seven months, during covid. I usually have it cut and coloured every 6 weeks. I looked like a demented badger!

IdaClair · 21/12/2024 23:50

18 years is the longest I’ve been without cutting my hair, I’ve also had periods of 9 years and 5 years where I haven’t cut it.

I can count on my fingers the amount of times I’ve been to have it done professionally. I really want it to look nice and I really would like to be the type of person who goes regularly but I’m just not sure how to make that happen. It’s so incredibly expensive and I’m not sure what exactly I can ask them to do to it. It sometimes looks nice when I come out but it lasts all of a day and then it’s back to normal and that money just can’t be justified. I don’t have enough experience of having it done to know how to ask for what I want or how to have enough to time and skill to style it every day. Lots of cash to feel a bit inept and disappointed.

YellowClogDancer · 21/12/2024 23:51

Thirty three years, I think. I cut my fringe with whatever scissors are to hand when it gets in my eyes. Put the long hair in a plait to keep it out of the way.

Ponderingwindow · 21/12/2024 23:54

A couple of years over Covid. Then I tried cutting it myself.

i never went back. I now do my own haircuts.
