Do you look the same in photos as you do in the mirror?

So I think I look ok in the mirror and then I’ll take a photo on my phone and woah … I look a stone heavier, my eyebrows look huge

Anyone else?

I look ok in the mirror
Photos I am a hideous troll

Comedycook · 15/12/2024 17:12

In the mirror I look like a cross between jlo and Kim k...

In photos...I'm waynetta slob...the fatter, less glamorous version

I tend to believe the mirror 😂

PrincessofWells · 15/12/2024 17:12

Op, you're not alone.

WobblyLondoner · 15/12/2024 17:15

Yes, ditto. I put it down to the fact that a mirror is showing a reverse image of you (but the one you are most familiar with) plus photos just capture a static image and not the whole animated you!

CeeJay81 · 15/12/2024 17:19

Totally agree. We are on holiday and just got my to take a photo of me. He took 4, all of then are awful 🙈, is that really how I look.

jollygreenpea · 15/12/2024 17:22

Yes, hideous in both. Mirrors and cameras are my enemy.

Zippedydodah · 15/12/2024 17:22

I hate having my photo taken, I’m not keen on looking in the mirror either!

NovemberMorn · 15/12/2024 17:25

I look really nice in some mirrors, in others I look awful (lighting is all) on most photos, now I am very old....I look like my mum.

ohyesido · 15/12/2024 17:26

I'm a horrid old witch in photos but everyone else looks like they normally do it puzzles me

Henry8thHoover · 15/12/2024 17:27

I have no idea how I ever pulled a bloke in my life! I look like a hideous troll in photos.

DuesToTheDirt · 15/12/2024 17:29

In the mirror I look like me. In 9/10 photos I look like a granny, and not in a good way. Luckily DH agrees that those 9/10 photos don't look like me.

Funnywonder · 15/12/2024 17:35

I always think I look quite presentable in the mirror (unless I'm taken by surprise in the M&S changing rooms.) I know, objectively, that one of my eyes is slightly higher than the other and that I don't exactly have a cute nose, but dear God, in photos I look like a Picasso.

Sunsetsandcocktails · 15/12/2024 17:41

I always think this, I look awful in photos which is annoying when you think you look ok in the mirror! I hope I look more like mirror-me, I’m going off the fact that DH who I think is gorgeous in real life looks bad in most photos but he definitely doesn’t look like that!

This is it. Because no one has a symmetrical face, your features look a little different the other way. I read an article (maybe Jon Ronson?) about a man who invented a "reverse mirror" so you could see yourself the other way - how other people see you. It didn't take off because people were unsettled by the unfamiliar image.

Oganesson118 · 15/12/2024 17:45

My friend was taking a selfie of us on Friday night and as she was taking it she said "You look different in photos!"

I'm still not sure if she meant in a good or bad way.

CissOff · 15/12/2024 17:50

I’m pretty photogenic - my mum says I’d be a catfish 😂

😂I'm sure you don't look like a Picasso but very funny.

M&S changing rooms are the absolute worst.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 15/12/2024 17:59

I have a theory that some people look better in motion.

DP is absolutely beautiful, and yet has never looked good in a single photo I've ever taken of her. Videos on the other hand, that's the person I recognise.

Foxblue · 15/12/2024 18:00

God, me - I'm a full time glasses wearer which doesn't help things - I'm very short sighted and even with thinning on my lenses, my eyes always look tiny in photos due to the lenses distortion. Makeup tricks to make my eyes look bigger and brighter are largely pointless (other than stick to light eyeshadow) I'll go out thinking wow, I've done a good job with my makeup, looks great, then I'll see a photo and i might as well not have bothered beyond eyeliner and lipstick! Any other glasses wearers out there with the same woes? (Bloody hate contacts too, and my face feels naked without my glasses!)

Anyone else?

Everyone.
Because your phone's lens is a wide-angle projecting onto a small sensor from close-range when you take a selfy. It distorts the image making everything that's closer appear magnified and out of proportion. Noses, chins, and cheeks look larger, ears look smaller.

I have a theory that the trout-pout fashion for lip enhancement is a direct result of this. In this case women choosing to alter their appearance to resemble the grossly distorted image given by a phone selfy.

If you want a decent photo of your face it needs to be taken with a slightly telephoto image from several feet away.

If you tried to design a camera to take ugly portraits, you'd end up with something very like a phone camera.

MaggieBsBoat · 15/12/2024 18:05

I’ve got a friend who believes she is drop dead gorgeous. A real stunner.
She isn’t by any stretch I don’t think but she wholeheartedly believes it. To the point where she thinks women dislike her because of it. I think she absolutely rocks and wish I could bottle whatever she’s got!!

StepCombatAttack · 15/12/2024 18:05

I look good in my bathroom mirror and one of the mirrors in the gym changing room. That’s about it. It’s all about the lighting.
I look okay in photos providing I know they are being taken and can arrange my expression suitably.

AshCrapp · 15/12/2024 18:05

I look ok in the mirror, and like a hideous chinless hippo in photos.

1clavdivs · 15/12/2024 18:06

Also, you tend to get your act together for the mirror. I suck in, stand up straight, eliminate my double-chin by moving 'ears forward'. I do the same for the camera but less successfully and my face always looks really round.

But even worse than either of the above is accidentally catching my reflection in a shop window. Are shop windows bendy or something?

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 15/12/2024 18:06

I'm happy with my face in the mirror, mostly. In photos I look like sloth from the goonies but everyone I know looks the same in real life and photos so I have succumbed to the fact that I look like sloth from the goonies. But with better hair.
