Do you look the same in photos as you do in the mirror?

So I think I look ok in the mirror and then I’ll take a photo on my phone and woah … I look a stone heavier, my eyebrows look huge

Anyone else?

@Foxblue My friends android camera puts an automatic filter on

Yes! Samsung's do this unless you disable it. My friend won't accept this no matter how many times I tell him he has a filter on his phone, even when I show him the settings! I'm not sure how he thinks his face is a smooth as a 20 year old's in photos!

I used to have this and then DH took a photo of the dog and asked why my camera made his face look so weird 🤣

ThePoshUns · 15/12/2024 20:41

I like how I look in the mirror. I hate how I look in photos.

Shodan · 15/12/2024 20:44

I was just thinking about this today, because I was out with friends last night and one of them has put some photos up on FB.

I honestly had no idea that my profile was of a saggy-chinned witch and have been prodding my chin today and wondering if it's always stuck out that much. Also my hairline appears to begin just above my eyebrows.

I am at the age where I prefer to look in mirrors with the light behind me but still, I didn't think I was that peculiar-looking...

FannyFernackerpants · 15/12/2024 20:45

I am convinced I was a blob fish in a past life and, like the plot in some B list horror movie you can only see my true self in a photograph. I walk around all day looking relatively normal, sometimes edging towards attractive (for a fatty!) then boom! The second a camera comes out all of my features melt together into the various folds of fat that I swear I never see in the mirror.
It took me over a decade to look through my wedding photos properly as I looked through the first few after we got married and was devastated to see that even a professional photographer couldn't make me look nice.

I have a theory that some people look better in motion.

DP is absolutely beautiful, and yet has never looked good in a single photo I've ever taken of her. Videos on the other hand, that's the person I recognise.

Interesting. I look good in mirrors but awful in photos but when the awful photo is live and I hold onto it where it gets into motion I look quite nice until it the motion stops lol

Ginkypig · 15/12/2024 20:48

Mirror is not great windows are worse but photos are truly awful!

I have an Android, just checked and there's definitely no filter on and I've never touched the settings! How strange - at least 3 people i know with an iphone had a default filter that made their teeth whiter automatically enabled when they got their phones.

In the mirror, I look like Catherine Deneuve. In photos I look like Gerard Depardieu.

😂😂😂

evtheria · 15/12/2024 20:51

I think I'm decent irl, I feel my face looks interestingly pretty or pretty interesting. Then I see a photo of myself and want to crawl under a bridge.

CottonCandyLand · 15/12/2024 20:54

I saw a clip of a TV show where a guy “what you see in the mirror is how you see yourself. What you see in a photo is how other people see you.”
it kind of makes sense, but it’s bloody depressing.

God how depressing

Yes, ditto. I put it down to the fact that a mirror is showing a reverse image of you (but the one you are most familiar with) plus photos just capture a static image and not the whole animated you!

Edited

Agree with this. I really don’t think I look good on photos. I had to watch some CCTV at work as was dreading how bad I would look but I matched my mirror / self perception a lot more when I was moving!

Foxlover46 · 15/12/2024 20:57

I hate photos especially when I think I look half decent in the mirror
Even worse when you Sit in a bright ship like Clarkes and I catch myself in their mirror 🙈

slightlydistrac · 15/12/2024 21:01

I always look absolutely dreadful in photos and avoid having my photo taken at all costs.

What is the opposite of photogenic? I'm that.

DrCoconut · 15/12/2024 21:06

I do not photograph well at all. The camera adds about a stone in weight and I have an asymmetric face and look half cut in 99.9% of photos. When I got married I told the photographer he'd need to take 100s of pictures to get a few decent enough for an album. I don't think he realised how serious I was. It was a struggle to find enough that weren't an embarrassment when we went to the studio to view. I'm guessing more modern photography methods will help people in this position as there is so much more editing, picking frames from a burst or whatever now.

xteac · 15/12/2024 21:25

My expression changes rapidly and I'm always on the move. I look fine in videos, not so in most photos. Always caught between expressions!

cantthinkofausername26 · 15/12/2024 21:29

God I can relate. Look like a cabbage patch kid in photos, but only have one chin in the mirror 🤷🏻‍♀️

overthinkersanonnymus · 15/12/2024 21:30

I hope to god I don't look like I do in pictures in real life.

CrazyGoatLady · 15/12/2024 21:41

Yep, hate most photos and always feel like I look horrid in them, even when I feel like I'm happy with my appearance in the mirror. I feel like Mr Potato Head in photos!

JohnRedding · 15/12/2024 22:46

Those who look well seem to have a passion or energy for life

healthybychristmas · 15/12/2024 23:06

Has anyone ever looked in the mirror and thought they looked good and then taken a photo of the mirror image? If so did it look equally good?

Mossstitch · 15/12/2024 23:23

Another who looks awful in photos😱
I read that it is because when you look in a mirror you see what you are expecting to see...........which depressed me even more that the photo was correct😭

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 15/12/2024 23:57

I think I look good in my mirror. Then someone takes a photo and I’ve morphed into a potato. It’s bizarre.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 16/12/2024 00:03

I look OK in the mirror, sometimes even quite nice, but almost always hideous in photos. Too many chins, and my face a shade of red I've never seen on anyone in real life. I think it's to do with the camera angle and the lighting. At least I hope so. Even my wedding photos are awful.
