What do you eat on Christmas Eve?

Growing up we would always order Chinese takeaway but the past few years I’ve done a buffet style tea. This year I was thinking of serving the ham I am going to cook on Christmas Eve but what should I have it with?

We always get Chinese as well. 🤣 always look forward to it.

workingcream · 15/12/2024 16:41

Used to be a chip shop supper but where I live now all the takeaways seem to be closed Christmas Eve 😱

We start the ham while it’s hot and have it with macaroni and cauliflower cheese - quite a nice plain meal before the richness of Christmas Day.

Imafraidtosayctr8 · 15/12/2024 16:42

We’re Catholic so we have a famine before feast situation.

So it’s either kedgeree, minestrone soup or a cheeseboard with savoury crackers, grapes and olives.

Pottedshrimpy · 15/12/2024 16:43

Usually pop a stew in the slow cooker, loads of rich food coming up and have just usually been on a lot of different parties and meals out so it’s the calm before the storm gastronomically speaking

I’d enjoy that. Unfortunately my husband wouldn’t 🤣

We always have hot pork sandwiches. No idea why.

JadeSeahorse · 15/12/2024 17:04

We always have salmon - which DH smokes earlier in the year - with new potatoes, petit pois and parsley sauce followed by home made chocolate fudge cake and single cream.

ClivetheDestroyer · 15/12/2024 17:04

The year we hosted Christmas for all out combined families, we didn't have any more space in the fridge, so got a takeaway curry and it was lovely!

tobee · 15/12/2024 17:09

Ugh! Non Christmas Day food is an annual dilemma for me.

Decafflatteplease · 15/12/2024 17:14

I always cook our gammon in the slow cooker on Christmas eve (with a tin of pineapple in juice and a glass of apple juice. Don't eat the pineapple it absorbs the salt!) then after church on Christmas eve we have the ham with egg and chips!

Jellycatspyjamas · 15/12/2024 17:14

I do dauphinois potatoes and green beans with ham, easy and really nice.

caringcarer · 15/12/2024 17:17

Every Xmas Eve I have always cooked a gammon ham with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas. On Xmas day I've always cooked a turkey or turkey crown and a beef. This year I am going to one of my adult DS's and he said he was cooking a turkey crown and a gammon ham on Xmas day. Therefore I suppose I'd better cook a beef on Xmas Eve this year but not sure I want roast 2 days in a row. Maybe I'll try the Chinese this year. It would save me time.

Sheknowsaboutme · 15/12/2024 17:20

Were out for lunch at 1pm so no tea required. Just a snack.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 15/12/2024 17:24

Steak and chips and garlic bread

Livinginaclock · 15/12/2024 17:28

I'm ordering Chinese food which will last for three days.
Can't wait!

Jellycoconut · 15/12/2024 17:30

Curry takeaway

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/12/2024 17:33

We have Chinese takeaway on the 23rd , Mcdonald or KFC for DS.
On Christmas Eve fish for DS and vegetarian grills for the rest , triple cooked chips, some dips on the side and pudding - this at lunch time

Late evening some French bread, cheeses, salads, fresh salsa, crisps , cakes

Never varies and that's one thing I love at Christmas.

Boxing Day is home made pizza the dough goes on to prove in the morning

Sziasztok · 15/12/2024 17:33

Goulash with latkes. However as DD1 is now veggie and no-one is arriving until late on Christmas Eve we’re having macaroni cheese and salad by popular request, with Black Forest gateau to follow.

hattie43 · 15/12/2024 17:35

Christmas Eve we are going to a panto followed my a pub meal . If we weren't going out Chinese sounds lovely

AtleastitsnotMonday · 15/12/2024 17:35

Fish. Prefer to have fish as the following days tend to be more meat based. My favourite is tuna steaks with garlic, ginger chilli and lime, stir fried tenderstem broccoli, water chestnuts, peppers and carrot ribbons with rice noodles but I'll put it to the vote. Which I suspect may result in Thai fishcakes.

lissie123 · 15/12/2024 17:36

Beef wellington green beans and dauphinois potatoes

AD1509 · 15/12/2024 17:40

We do Greek food. Chicken and leek Kotopita, Greek salad, rosemary garlic potato’s, many many dips.
