What do you eat on Christmas Eve?

Growing up we would always order Chinese takeaway but the past few years I’ve done a buffet style tea. This year I was thinking of serving the ham I am going to cook on Christmas Eve but what should I have it with?

OP posts:

Cooked ham (my mum makes us one each year), eggs and chips 🍖😋

StormingNorman · 15/12/2024 18:21

Fish stew with oven-baked baguettes.

Pudding is brandy snaps with vanilla ice cream and fruit in booze. Last year it was kirsch cherries. This year I’m eyeing up mini pears in Calvados 😋

We have Christmas Dinner so we can chill out and play with the grandchildren on the day itself. We are in our fourth year of doing this, and I can't see us going back to "normal" any time soon

OP, I’d carve the ham and just butter some nice bread rolls and allow people to make their own hot sandwiches, maybe serves some fries or crisps, coleslaw & salad along with various pickles/chutneys.

Seagullsinawinterwonderland · 15/12/2024 18:29

Usually Chinese but ours closes on a Tuesday so.not sure this year.

dontforgetme · 15/12/2024 18:30

A buffet at my mom's house!

mitogoshigg · 15/12/2024 18:32

Varies, lasagna this year. Have gone out and got take away too

Crikeyalmighty · 15/12/2024 18:32

Hairy bikers beef and coconut curry ( a dry curry) and jasmine rice - I do it every year and everyone loves it

Plus warm mince pies and cream

PrincessPeaches123 · 15/12/2024 18:40

I do the ham. Then it's ham egg and proper fried chips.

We’re Catholic so we have a famine before feast situation.

So it’s either kedgeree, minestrone soup or a cheeseboard with savoury crackers, grapes and olives.

I was brought up a Catholic, we never did this and neither did my very Catholic Aunt, who’d put on a big Christmas Eve buffet 😁

TimeForATerf · 15/12/2024 18:46

Go out for curry with DC, have done this since 2010 when we stopped doing panto and pub tea,

these days kids are adults, tradition is pub, curry, quiz at home with more booze, bed.

Buffet

twentysevendresses · 15/12/2024 19:14

Gammon joint, Mac n cheese, loads of garlic bread and a big Greek salad (all asked for by my grandchildren 🤣).

Crunchymum · 15/12/2024 19:15

Depends. If we're home and I'm cooking the Christmas dinner then it's usually takeaway pizza on Christmas Eve. I've usually already started cooking by this point so cba prepping on Xmas eve dinner too.

If we're out (as we are this year) for Christmas dinner then I'll probably do steak, mash and garlic green beans with steal baguettes for the kids.

Toottooot · 15/12/2024 19:15

Stovies.

FloralMoon · 15/12/2024 19:20

We either order a Chinese takeaway or we have a little festive selection of pate, baked Camembert, grapes, baguette, chutneys
and always a Christmas film!

DotComMillionaire · 15/12/2024 19:20

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 15/12/2024 17:59

Cheese board and cured meats usually.

Exactly this. No heavy meals or cooking the day before.

I kinda fancy Chinese takeaway now though

welshweasel · 15/12/2024 19:41

We eat out Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve - totally game changer if you have young kids as it means that on Christmas Day you can give them your undivided attention for presents, playing games, going out for walks etc.

On Christmas Day we eat a massive chessboard and cold meats and the kids choose whatever they want, even if that's chicken nuggets or pizza.

Prior to this we used to have a takeaway curry on Xmas eve.

hexsnidgett · 15/12/2024 19:41

Chip shop for us this year, we did it spontaneously last year and it was great, so easy and hardly any dishes! (there should be none in my opinion but dh insists on plates and cutlery)
Previously I have made lasagne or pizza.

NormaNormalPants · 15/12/2024 19:45

We always cook a ham and have it with mashed potatoes, peas or green beans and homemade parsley sauce.

TheGrinchIsComingToTown · 15/12/2024 19:46

We always go out for a meal, this year it's to a new French bistro.

I'm on Mounjaro so will be getting one of the starters as a main!

BruFord · 15/12/2024 19:49

My DH is Catholic so we follow the Italian tradition of having seafood with pasta, I.e., no meat, on Christmas Eve. It’s delicious!

TuesdayNameChangeArama · 15/12/2024 19:49

A few drinks and (lots of) canapés for lunch with my cousins, and then lentil soup (homemade) for dinner. Same as ever 😍😍

KnottyKnitting · 15/12/2024 19:52

Yup! Chinese for us too. Our favourite Chinese doesn't deliver do we have to be on the phone at 5pm so we can get a decent collection slot!
