What do you eat on Christmas Eve?

Growing up we would always order Chinese takeaway but the past few years I’ve done a buffet style tea. This year I was thinking of serving the ham I am going to cook on Christmas Eve but what should I have it with?

A piece of gammon, glazed in brown sugar and mustard, with new potatoes, parsley sauce and veg like broccoli and cauliflower. If I can remember to these will be covered in warmed through creme fraiche and scattered with pine nuts and breadcrumbs and stuck in the oven to crisp up the top,
The meat is then served cold along with turkey with Boxing Day salads, will go into toasted sarnies and I will make sure to have ham egg and chips at some point.
Any left over spuds/veg will go into a big 'bubble and squeak' fry up with cold meats in the next couple of days.

We go to a local place for pizza. Love it! Love having something not turkey/cranberry flavoured and no washing up. It’s our lovely family tradition.

Takeaway here too. This year son working so won't get here til after 8pm so looks like takeaway still.

We have party food, but I cook a mustard and honey glazed ham christmas eve afternoon and slice it thinly and have it as part of the buffet. Will be a nice salad, some prepared party food, crisps and dips, bread etc. Then warm some slices through for christmas dinner, with another joint. Having pork this year as have decided turkey is rubbish. I heard someone say if turkey was nice we would eat it all year, not just christmas day and I was like yeah, you are right!

The gammon then gets used up boxing day, will be leftover pork as well and will cook more roast potatoes, a cauliflower cheese, piggies in blankets and stuffing and some leftover red cabbage.

Prefer christmas eve and boxing day food to christmas day!

If we were living in the UK it would be a Chinese takeaway, picked up after meeting a few friends at the pub for a couple of Christmas Eve drinks. But we're in France and I couldn't tell you where the nearest Chinese takeaway is or if it's even any good, so we're doing like the French do and having fish - a fish pie more precisely, with garlic bread, petit pois and carrots. Can't wait!

The Ham and Nigella’s fancy macaroni cheese. Simple but delicious.

CurbsideProphet · 15/12/2024 17:53

A little buffet picnic in the living room!

Chasingaces · 15/12/2024 17:55

Family Indian - no way am I cooking the day before Xmas.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 15/12/2024 17:59

Cheese board and cured meats usually.

We used to go out to our local pub on Christmas Eve but it closed in July, and our local Chinese closed in October, so I'm looking for inspo on this thread! Live in a village so not a great deal of choice re takeaways.

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/12/2024 18:04

We're hoping to have fish and chips as it's my DD's favourite when she comes home but must check it's actually open.

Green eggs?

Mashed potatoes and parsley sauce. 😋. Any old green veg you happen to like.

Tristar15 · 15/12/2024 18:06

Cheese, pate, grapes, olives, stuffed peppers, rocket salad. Going out for lunch so won’t have anything significantly filling in the evening.

An Italian restaurant has recently opened less than 50m from my house and you've just given me an idea...

RamblasTapas · 15/12/2024 18:07

For the last few years it's been home made pizza and watching a movie.
It's what everyone wants this year too. I'm happy to keep up the tradition!
I love making pizza!!!

raclette. only time we use the massive machine taking up far too much room. once we did fondue as well. but it was too much hassle doing both. Just one is enough!

HPandthelastwish · 15/12/2024 18:08

DD goes to her dad's and I raid M&S yellow stickers at 3pm and have a selection of whatever I pick up

@Inmydreams88 add a couple of spoonfuls of red cabbage water to eggs as you fry them will turn the whites green.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 15/12/2024 18:08

We have brie bacon and cranberry baguettes for lunch then go out for tea! Local Italian this year.

Garman · 15/12/2024 18:08

We never plan it, we just make
something from whatever is in that isn’t for the next day 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bookworm333 · 15/12/2024 18:08

We are doing home made pizza too, use the bread maker for dough so it's not too painful - definitely needs to be something easy before all the cooking on Christmas!

Spuds88 · 15/12/2024 18:10

Peel a satsuma! Crack a nut!
