I need help for wedding starters with all these requirements!

My lovely wedding venue have given us free reign to suggest some starters as we like nothing on their (really quite extensive) menu. Yes, I am a fussy eater! And what I do like, DP doesn't!
Main course will be a roast, followed by sticky Toffee.
Things I do not like: most meat (other than chicken, bacon, ham). Fish. Cheese other than cheddar, mozzarella, halloumi. Risotto. Soup is ruled out (too messy, not special enough!).
Things I'd normally have as a starter: tomato bruschetta, tomato and mozzarella salad, garlic bread.
Things DP doesn't like: tomato. Goats cheese. Olives. Courgette. Cumin. Tacos.
DP nornally has a meat or fish starter.
We can only have one starter option for everyone to eat so also trying to keep it to something most will eat (barring dietary requirements).
The only potential we've come up with is bacon and cheese potato skins. Not sure if this works with our menu though!
Please help this stressed couple out so we can send a list to our venue to work with (so they don't hate me for being such hard work!).
Thank you kindly!

Can it be a meat starter and something like a tomato brushchetta as the veg option which you could have?

redgingerbread · 14/12/2024 19:47

What time of year is the wedding? Roast dinner and sticky toffee pudding sounds quite heavy so I’d go for something salady.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 14/12/2024 19:48

I'd either not bother or pick something suitable for the guests I'm hosting and one or both of us could pick out the bits we don't like/skip the starter. If you don't think soup (which is a broad category) is special enough I struggle to see how you think potato skins are.

Some kind of beetroot based salad?

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/12/2024 19:50

Antipasti

Dash0Cal · 14/12/2024 19:50

We had big plates of antipasti for people to help themselves. Always a good option if you’re worried about who likes what.

I think potato skins would be very heavy before a roast.

3luckystars · 14/12/2024 19:51

Soup is lovely!!!

Just to let you know you can have a different starter if you want, like melon or whatever, get what most of the guests will eat.

reluctantbrit · 14/12/2024 19:51

Antipasti platter where people help themselves per table.

Cured meat, cheese, bread, roasted vegetables, sliced chicken, smoked fish

redgingerbread · 14/12/2024 19:56

Or what about ditching the starter and having more canapés?

ThisMustBeMyDream · 14/12/2024 19:56

Antipasti wouldn't work. I don't like anything on there when I've just looked it up meats, cheeses, olives etc).
Wedding is July.
Don't like beetroot.
Already said no soup.
Melon I like, DP doesnt.
One of the reasons we definitely want a starter is because at our taster session we felt the portions were too small. We were originally going for a Mediterranean sharer which didn't have a starter. But we left hungry.

We aren't having canapes as I don't like them and our wedding breakfast is at 2pm anyway. We marry at 12.

Antipasti idea is good. If not practical can you have that sort of cheese board at the end of the evening much later (depending on timing of the meal) after any dancing and no starter

JC03745 · 14/12/2024 19:58

Thank goodness DH and I eat anything and aren't picky! This would be my nightmare if I had to host you both for a meal 😆
You said you don't like fish, does that include shellfish and prawns? I agree, with roast and sticky toffee pudding being heavy, so I'd have a lighter entree. The potato skins sound like something from an American fast food place, and not something I'd ever consider for a wedding. No idea how a soup is messier than potato skins???
Might have missed a dislike so ignore if I did:

-Chicken liver parfait with toast and caramelised onion sauce
-Prawn cocktail
-Tomato brushetta sounded lovely. Can DH have anchovies added to his?
-The tomato/mozzarella salad with a pesto drizzle and basil leaves
-Arancini balls (Bolognese or whatever fillings you both eat)
-Melon, proscuitto and balsamic glaze

caringcarer · 14/12/2024 19:59

Bruscheta with cheese and tomatoes. Chicken wings in BBQ sauce.

WhappleBee · 14/12/2024 20:00

I am really fussy and have lots of allergies. I had a different starter to everyone else at my wedding to make it easier. We had a meat choice and a veggie choice for everyone else but I had garlic bread. Venue were fine about it as I was the bride!

3luckystars · 14/12/2024 20:00

Get the melon for yourself and a crowd pleaser for everyone else.

Ineffable23 · 14/12/2024 20:02

Roast butternut squash salad with parmesan (I'd that okay if you like hard cheese like cheddar or still a no? Could maybe substitute halloumi if you wanted) and prosciutto and pine nuts, drizzled with balsamic vinegar.

Or a grilled peach, mozzarella and prosciutto salad, again drizzled with balsamic.

WorriedRelative · 14/12/2024 20:02

Surely you can't have a meat starter if there is only one option? You need it to be ok for vegetarian guests too. If you can have a meat and a veggie option then that means you and DH can have different.

Some ideas:
Jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese
Breaded brie wedges with a dip
Baked camembert
Spring rolls
Samosas and/or bhajee
Melon
mushrooms, either in Garlic butter or breaded with a couple of dips or in a creamy white wine sauce
Stuffed peppers

If you can have a meat and a veggie option it gets much easier.

If you really struggle what about having say three mini starters (like canapés) on a plate. Then if some people don't like them all they can swap with their other half.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 14/12/2024 20:02

Chicken liver parfait with toast and caramelised onion sauce - wouldn't eat chicken liver
-Prawn cocktail - no fish
-Tomato brushetta sounded lovely. Can DH have anchovies added to his? DP wouldn't eat it at all.
-The tomato/mozzarella salad with a pesto drizzle and basil leaves. Again DP wouldn't eat.
-Arancini balls (Bolognese or whatever fillings you both eat) No from both of us.
-Melon, proscuitto and balsamic glaze. No meat like that for me.

I have some bizarre food allergies so out menu was difficult to resolve.

Do you like Melon? We had melon with some fresh berries, think there were strawberries. Raspberries and blueberries

Grumblebees · 14/12/2024 20:02

Creamy mushrooms on little bits of bruschetta? Or does one of you not like mushrooms? Me and DH sound quite similar to you and yours but I can't actually remember what we had for starters at our wedding!

BeerForMyHorses · 14/12/2024 20:02

Mozzarella dippers

Chicken goujons

You are being a little awkward, there has to be something you can both settle with

TotallyTwisted · 14/12/2024 20:03

Prosciutto and melon salad. Prosciutto is basically ham so you'll be fine with it. Your DP can pick out the melon.

ETA Sorry I missed that someone else had suggested similar.

Patienceinshortsupply · 14/12/2024 20:03

Greek Mezze - pita breads, cherry tomatoes, cucumber sticks, olives with feta, humous, green salad, stuffed vine leaves, spanakopita (filo pastry with spinach and cheese), souvlaki (meat skewers). All on a shared platter so people can help themselves.

I'd be sad eating melon at my wedding. Even though I like it. It isn't delicious and what I'd imagine for a wedding breakfast.
Honestly, we'd have been happy with a Dominoes and sides for our wedding breakfast! We don't like fussy food as I call it! Or posh food. We both love carbs!
