I need help for wedding starters with all these requirements!

My lovely wedding venue have given us free reign to suggest some starters as we like nothing on their (really quite extensive) menu. Yes, I am a fussy eater! And what I do like, DP doesn't!
Main course will be a roast, followed by sticky Toffee.
Things I do not like: most meat (other than chicken, bacon, ham). Fish. Cheese other than cheddar, mozzarella, halloumi. Risotto. Soup is ruled out (too messy, not special enough!).
Things I'd normally have as a starter: tomato bruschetta, tomato and mozzarella salad, garlic bread.
Things DP doesn't like: tomato. Goats cheese. Olives. Courgette. Cumin. Tacos.
DP nornally has a meat or fish starter.
We can only have one starter option for everyone to eat so also trying to keep it to something most will eat (barring dietary requirements).
The only potential we've come up with is bacon and cheese potato skins. Not sure if this works with our menu though!
Please help this stressed couple out so we can send a list to our venue to work with (so they don't hate me for being such hard work!).
Thank you kindly!

Are you your priority or are your guests the priority? Tbh if you’re both so fussy and with such different palates I think you might have to suck up being a bit hungrier than everyone else and go for a crowd pleaser.

You cannot serve potato skins as a starter at a wedding.

Prosciutto and melon salad. Prosciutto is basically ham so you'll be fine with it. Your DP can pick out the melon.

ETA Sorry I missed that someone else had suggested similar.

Edited

I wouldn't eat prosciutto. I'm fussy over my ham.
I was veggie for 20 years. So meat is tricky for me.

Salad? We're having chopped cesear salad as our starter, lighter option before a heavy main.
Or rocket, parmesan, prosciutto salad with balsamic glaze, crusty bread on the side?

I’d change the venue and just have a big hog roast with sides .

Something like that peach and mozzarella salad I have suggested would be fine without the ham as a vegetarian option though? You could add a sprinkling of nuts for some crunchy textural interest. Same for the butternut squash one.

Mushroom bruscetta

galletti · 14/12/2024 20:08

Wow! I think you are so overthinking this for both of you and perhaps start thinking about your guests, some of which may have specific dietary requirements. Just ask the venue to do what you and your dh to be would like separately.

SaagAloopa · 14/12/2024 20:09

Samosa

ihatecoffee · 14/12/2024 20:09

I wouldn't have a roast and sticky toffee for a wedding, let alone a July wedding! It's far far far too heavy and stodgy.
As a guest I wouldn't eat it (it's just not a wedding meal anytime)
I eat anything...and I mean anything...so have a think about what your guests would like?
It's going to cost you a lot of money to possibly have loads of food left on plates

DarkDarkNight · 14/12/2024 20:09

Will they only offer one option per course? I don’t think you will find one starter that everyone will eat.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 14/12/2024 20:10

WorriedRelative · 14/12/2024 20:02

Surely you can't have a meat starter if there is only one option? You need it to be ok for vegetarian guests too. If you can have a meat and a veggie option then that means you and DH can have different.

Some ideas:
Jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese
Breaded brie wedges with a dip
Baked camembert
Spring rolls
Samosas and/or bhajee
Melon
mushrooms, either in Garlic butter or breaded with a couple of dips or in a creamy white wine sauce
Stuffed peppers

If you can have a meat and a veggie option it gets much easier.

If you really struggle what about having say three mini starters (like canapés) on a plate. Then if some people don't like them all they can swap with their other half.

We can have a vegan option I think. Unfortunately they lump veggies in with the vegans now.

Jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese. Don't like cream cheese unless it's cooked in a meal like pasta for example.
Breaded brie wedges with a dip. No cheese like this.
Baked camembert. As above.
Spring rolls. Both like, but don't think it works with the menu.
Samosas and/or bhajee. Both like again, but doesn't work with menu.
Melon. I like, he doesn't, but boring for a wedding.
mushrooms, either in Garlic butter or breaded with a couple of dips or in a creamy white wine sauce. DP said no to mushrooms as too many don't like them. I love them, they are my favourite food!
Stuffed peppers. Not keen. I like peppers. But never had a stuffed one that I thought wow, that was great, give me more!
I really dislike canepes or that kind of starter (even those trio of dessert things - just no!)

This is true. Although OP doesn't seem in the least bit concerned about the guests! It's hard enough finding one thing the bride and groom will both eat!

As I said earlier, the meals are small. You wouldn't be stuffed. Trust me. We were hungry after our tasting session. We saw couples eating the roast. It is not a big meal. It's what I hate about posh food! Give me a big plate of food to enjoy!

Upsidedowntown · 14/12/2024 20:12

@ThisMustBeMyDream you choose 1 starter you like and everyone has this. Then DP has the only alternative which is something he likes. You won't be able to find something you both like it seems.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 14/12/2024 20:04

I'd be sad eating melon at my wedding. Even though I like it. It isn't delicious and what I'd imagine for a wedding breakfast.
Honestly, we'd have been happy with a Dominoes and sides for our wedding breakfast! We don't like fussy food as I call it! Or posh food. We both love carbs!

So do a version of that. A platter starter like goujons, wings, mini pizzas, garlic bread, wedges or stuffed skins. A bit of token salad. You don’t have to like all of it and can pick what you like, as long as you both have something on there you like. I think you’re trying too hard here. The main and dessert are what matter.

Fireworknight · 14/12/2024 20:13

Smoked salmon over rocket /cherry tomatoes etc

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/12/2024 20:13

Spring rolls. Both like, but don't think it works with the menu.

Adapt it. Call it a 'parcel' and make it a different shape.

That's a bit rude. You must have missed this from my OP. 🤨

Don't have a starter. If the portions are small, do what we did and after the pudding, have a massive cheese course. We had a sharing joint for main, pudding, then they brought out a buffet of cheese, crackers, pork pies, fruit, sausage rolls, chutney, we cut the wedding cake and had it added to the buffet as well. Everyone would just pick at what they wanted.

DPotter · 14/12/2024 20:15

How about forgetting the starter and getting the venue to make the mains larger portions ? Say extra roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, stuffing. Failing this - nice breads and dips - you could have a mackerel pate, houmous with salad garnish

Roast and sticky toffee is a bit on the heavy side for a July wedding

pestoblush · 14/12/2024 20:16

i would go back to the soup to be honest

we had a Caesar type salad and soup at ours

Mushroom vol au vents? Mini mushroom wellingtons?

Mushrooms on a hashbrown?

Armadillosparkle · 14/12/2024 20:17

What about some kind of fancy potato croquette stuffed with something you both like? Served with a small salad?

AtmosAtmos · 14/12/2024 20:18

I’d love what you suggested if the pizza, garlic bread and salad just as one meal.
So many weddings have the posh food and I can’t see a reason why if neither of you are keen on it.
