Neighbour called police on me about parking

My neighbour has a commercial van and parks next to my driveway on a normal public road . He parks very close to my driveway so it hard for me to see when reversing out . We are having work done to our driveway widen it and paving it . So I took my car out the driveway and put it where he normally puts his van when he was out . He went wild mad at me saying it’s his space I need to move and called the police on me who said I’m not doing anything illegal. Should I just move it to not cause any issues with them or be mean and leave it till building work done ?

Just leave it. he doesn't own that space on the road and the police have confirmed this.

Ohnonotmeagain · 27/11/2024 21:12

Leave it. Let him call the police until he gets done for wasting police time.

olympicsrock · 27/11/2024 21:12

Leave it otherwise he will bully you for ever more.

Leave it.

Spoilt brats only act that way because people give in.

Treat him the way you’d treat a toddler.

Love that it’s very true he’s acting very spoilt il leave it there I just hope he or the family doesn’t damage it

That’s what I think too . I think il leave it there till my garden work is done like everyone said I can’t let him bully me to move . He has no rights beside how wide I’m making the drive he won’t fit his van there after that

I can't believe the police came out for that, I wonder what he said to them! I wouldn't move no, he doesn't own the road and he sounds like a prat.

Futurethinking2026 · 27/11/2024 21:25

Legally you’re doing nothing wrong but I’d be pretty miffed(obviously wouldn’t call the police!) if I’d always parked somewhere and then all of a sudden you just parked your car there. It’s not very neighbourly.

Maplelady · 27/11/2024 21:25

I’m going to say it… male entitlement. You pay road tax and he pays road tax. You’re both entitled to park on a public road. Some of my neighbours with drives park on the road. It’s a bit annoying but I wouldn’t dream of telling them to move their cars because that would make me a twat

It it neighbourly to park your van so close to your neighbours driveway it means they can’t get out safely?

Allthehorsesintheworld · 27/11/2024 21:27

Where you’re widening your drive will the pavement be dropped for the extra bit? I’m just thinking if it isn’t he could park on the road and block you in as long as he only parked on the unstopped bit.

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 21:27

If he had cone and asked me politely I would have said I’m having building work done and I’m sorry but to just knock on my door and say move your car

Ineffable23 · 27/11/2024 21:28

You can leave it there. You should be able to leave it there. He was wrong to get angry.

But having said all that, if you don't want your car keyed, I would move it.

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 21:29

Yup that’s being done too so hopefully he won’t put his van close

Why? It’s a public road and o/p has just as much right to park there as the van.

why should she move and not him?

Honestly, it depends on the street, it’s not ideal but some places parking is so limited that there isn’t much choice.

BeatriceAndLottie · 27/11/2024 21:31

Personally I’d park there more often to annoy him🤣 He doesn’t own the road.

Our (horrendous) neighbours have recently bought an unnecessary SUV that is so large they can’t even fit it in their own driveway and have therefore claimed the pavement outside our house as their own. Anytime they’re out I park my car in ‘their’ space for badness.

No one pays road tax, it doesn’t exist . You list vehicle excise duty based on your vehicle emissions which has nothing do with the road.

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 21:33

The crazy thing is he has a driveway but it’s filled with junk and he never parks over his own driveway leave that clear for his son

OP posts:
GlassHeart1 · 27/11/2024 21:34

There is a bit of an unspoken rule in my neighbourhood that spaces in the road outside the house "belong" to the house and occasionally there have been arguments over that.
But people tend to be more flexible when someone is having work done and there are extra cars/vans around as long as they park conssiderately.

I was wondering if he has a drive. Well in that case I’d continue parking in the road to annoy him.

Did you ask him why he doesn’t use his driveway?

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 21:36

Yup says he needs the space for his things that he fixes
