Neighbour called police on me about parking

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 21:10

My neighbour has a commercial van and parks next to my driveway on a normal public road . He parks very close to my driveway so it hard for me to see when reversing out . We are having work done to our driveway widen it and paving it . So I took my car out the driveway and put it where he normally puts his van when he was out . He went wild mad at me saying it’s his space I need to move and called the police on me who said I’m not doing anything illegal. Should I just move it to not cause any issues with them or be mean and leave it till building work done ?

I'm quoting you. Because good fucking god no. It is not HIS space. It is a public road. He like everyone else on the road needs to be courteous and respectful. He called the police? They know it is not an issue. Do not move your vehicle ever even when building works complete.

No one pays road tax, it doesn’t exist . You list vehicle excise duty based on your vehicle emissions which has nothing do with the road.

It’s does actually as it goes towards the maintenance of the roads

I think he stopped speaking to you because he read that you're widening your drive and he won't be able to park where he wants.

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 22:46

im too soft that my trouble but il leave it there and even when the building work done il leave it for a few days let him stir lol

he phone the police? what an epi twat-o not move for him at all

notprincehamlet · 27/11/2024 23:06

You pay road tax and he pays road tax. You’re both entitled to park on a public road.
No one pays road tax, it isn't a thing, and no one is entitled to park on a public road - you're obstructing a public highway which is a danger both to other road users (especially cyclists) and pedestrians (especially children). And you should be reversing onto your drive - reversing off it is so dangerous.

Tahlbias · 27/11/2024 23:07

He's stopped talking because he knows he won't be able to park his van where he normally parks it.

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 21:24

That’s what I think too . I think il leave it there till my garden work is done like everyone said I can’t let him bully me to move . He has no rights beside how wide I’m making the drive he won’t fit his van there after that

No one owns any bit of kerbside parking where there is no dropped kerb. You are fine to leave your car there.

Edited- I wrote a bit about the extending of the driveway before I saw this is being done properly with planning permission and proper extension of the dropped kerb. Apologies for not RTFT.

I believe you have to pay for the white box on your drive entrance otherwise even if your drive is blocked it's not breaking the law. I used to live on a terraced street . First home gets to park, otherwise park where you can. Many places were built in horse and cart days so live with it, works van is even more unreasonable. Stand your ground, he's being an arse

LilacLilyBird · 27/11/2024 23:38

He's got his own driveway

He's just chose to turn it into a tip

That's hardly your fault

Was that when the planning letters went out?

Legally you’re doing nothing wrong but I’d be pretty miffed(obviously wouldn’t call the police!) if I’d always parked somewhere and then all of a sudden you just parked your car there. It’s not very neighbourly.

Don't be ridiculous 😂

severyyhv · 28/11/2024 00:04

I live near a school once came home at 330 and could not get parked on my street. Parked around the corner. Decided to leave it there and collect it the next day. Went the next morning and the police were taking the details. I asked if there was an issue apparently someone on the street reported it abandoned, It had been there less than a day!

If he damaged your car the police would know he’d done it.

this, he'd be a complete idiot to do anything after a police incident had been logged.
although he doesn't sound the brightest of sparks.
I wonder if he's even realised that he won't legally be able to park in his usual spot once your work has been finished, that will wind him up even more!

BeatriceAndLottie · 27/11/2024 21:31

Personally I’d park there more often to annoy him🤣 He doesn’t own the road.

Our (horrendous) neighbours have recently bought an unnecessary SUV that is so large they can’t even fit it in their own driveway and have therefore claimed the pavement outside our house as their own. Anytime they’re out I park my car in ‘their’ space for badness.

I would absolutely do this & even be tempted to buy an old banger deliberately to park it there!

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/11/2024 00:55

Where I am the residents where all OO (for the main) but in the last 10 years or so most are renting from BTLers. I have no issue with who owns their own home and who doesnt....however.....

In the old days we all parked outside our own houses and if someone else was in "your" space, you parked it in one of the (many) spaces available further away in a non residential street. But since there are no longer long term residents, the neighbourhood understanding of "dont make your problem someone elses problem" disappeared. We all understood that we were there for a good while so it made sense to maintain neighbourly friendliness. Now its every man for himself. And the woman up the road CANNOT PARK with a gun to her fucking head, I have watched her and you could park a fucking three carriage TRAIN in the space she needs, so she takes up two spaces in her small car!!.....ok yes that one pisses me off

I could move to a place with a drive, but given I am mortgage free and physically able, I am prepared to put up with the inconvenience, APART FROM THE STUPID COW WHO CANNOT PARK!!!!!!! She is outside my house right now, taking up enough space for her and someone else to both park, but no.......I am parked in the next street.

Eh?! It’s not very neighbourly to park knowing you’re blocking someone’s view of the street when they reverse out their drive.

Honestly the entitlement of some people. Repeated behaviour /= ownership.

I was gonna suggest getting a £50 car and park it there.

Fraaahnces · 28/11/2024 01:22

If there is any damage to your car, he’s going to be the first suspect after calling the police for something like this… He’s not a brain surgeon, or a rocket scientist, is he?

verycloakanddaggers · 28/11/2024 04:03

Senmum1981 · 27/11/2024 21:57

I’ve got a ring doorbell and you can see my car and a camera top widow of the house if he does do anything

You shouldn't be recording the street (pavement or road), your camera should only record your own property.

It's not very neighbourly to "claim" a public space for your own. Your attitude is exactly why people shouldn't let neighbours get away with doing it, people get a mistaken sense of entitlement if they get away with things too long.
