Do people not understand how elections work?

In reference to the petition to call for another general election. You don’t get to say “oh wait, actually I’ve changed my mind. I had no clue the Labour Party would try to redistribute wealth and it would impact me so I want a re do!”

Also, so many bots / people from Indonesia filling it in. I have a certain group of people on my fb sharing it. Do they really think we’ll get to vote again? And would they all vote Conservative now?

Am I the one missing something?

What about the UK postcodes being circulated on Twitter? How is it possible to discriminate between those and actual UK residents?

I didn't have to put my postcode in. I'd guess that they're actually using location IP data to pick up on which country someone is in, otherwise no one would show up as being from another country if it was purely based on postcodes being entered.

It's surprising how many idiots, especially on here, that really think this is for a GE

I think it's surprising how many idiots on here think this is about' idiots wanting an election rerun'. It's not - it's is about expressing our disgust at this shit shower. Some mumsnetters are really hard of thinking it seems.

Definitely this. An absolute shower.

Didn't we have a vote on PR? (In the early stages of the coalition)?

Yes and we had an abysmal turn out no-one knew what it was for why it was happening when it was happening it was scurried through in my area from what I could see personally

As a left wing socialist political party with the remit to bring more equity and redistribution of wealth, is the NI increase really a surprise?

Farmers and a lot of pensioners effected by his changes are not cash rich and redistribution of wealth overseas is just designed to piss people off how could it not 🤷‍♀️

Maurepas · 25/11/2024 16:11

I like it a lot - regarding people in Indonesia etc voting - Untrue - as I tried to vote twice and it blocked me!

sickandtiredofitallnow · 25/11/2024 16:18

Yeah because after 14 years trying to get in Labour will call an election after a few months.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Yes, there was a referendum. The majority voted to retain the current electoral system.

Technically all we can say is that the majority voted No to adopting AV, since that was the question on the voting slip. It suited the government to construe that as a vote in favour of retaining FPTP.

If we'd actually had a question on PR, or even some sort of question about the current system, there might have been a different response.

Edited to include a missing word

List of signatures by country. It's a way to demonstrate the anger a lot of the public have, most of whom are in the UK.

VPNs mean people could be posting from any country and have it look like the UK though.

Perhaps the question “what is a woman?” is clearer for you? You use the word “woman” when the people in power have no idea what one is. (Except they do of course, but can’t be seen to acknowledge reality and sway from the narrative).

Again... Very bizarre.

They are enacting laws and implementing processes to protect women. Did you miss the changes they are making to policing and the court process to improve support for domestic violence victims and rape conviction rates?

Doesn't that depend on what channels you consume your news on? I tend to get my news online from BBC news and The Guardian, neither of whom are covering this as far as I can see (or certainly weren't when I checked at lunchtime).

Keir Starmer: I'm not surprised some want general election re-run

We should be objecting to the voting system we have. Which those in Belarus and Russia have too. Some form of PR would mean that we had a government supported by the majority, not a minority of those who voted.

I've never been forced to vote for the ruling party at gunpoint, nor has anyone else in the UK as far as I'm aware. The comparison with Russia and Belarus is not strictly accurate.

I think it's sending a strong message to Starmer that he is not doing a good job (understatement). He doesn't seem to have a clue and he keeps persisting.

Today I read he's introducing a new law re spiking drinks. He's a liar! There has been a law against this for years.

Here's a nice link for you. I just read it on another thread and thought you would find it helpful. Best not to assume this new law means Starmer has lied!

What’s the law on spiking? - Full Fact

We’ve seen some confusion online following Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s claim today that “spiking will be made a criminal offence”, with some…

Cant stand the guy but the petition is bobbins and anyone signing it is as stupid as the remainers who wanted to overturn brexit (Starmer himself?!)

User37482 · 25/11/2024 19:47

I think people are just venting, I don’t think they think they are getting another vote they are just telling the government they think they are shit. I don’t understand why it’s got so many people backs up.

I’ve assumed they are trolling the government.

User37482 · 25/11/2024 19:48

People use VPN’s, I’ve used one in the past.

To answer your original question, in my experience, NO.

Most people don't realise that 1/3rd of the votes can give a Party 2/3rds of the Seats and effectively all of the power.

Do you know how votes translate to Seats? | Mumsnet

Labour got nearly twice as many Seats as they did Votes (by percentage). That's not right, surely?!?!?!

I'm starting to really dislike this country. I used to love the British, thinking they were tolerant, humorous, good natured and on the whole fairly well educated and intelligent (obviously not everyone but still). However, lately all I see is stupidity, mean spiritedness, racism, little England mentality. I remember I used to be shocked when someone was openly racist or xenophobic but now these voices seem to be deafening out all other voices. It seemed to become noticeable after Brexit but even more so now. All I hear about is small boats, supposed two tier policing, "people have had enough".

There's so many really serious problems facing the country and facing the world but people are obsessing about the wrong things. I know many people are living shit lives, and I'm sure they have had enough, but they're punching down rather than looking at the real causes.
It's not just here, I know. It's the same in America and other places.
This petition is just the latest example of stupidity.

Take it from me and my American relatives... in America it is far, far worse.

Ain't that the truth! :-(

https://fairvoteaction.org/ are in favour (or should I say "favor") of RCV.

RCV is still a form of "winner takes all" voting, but is a bit better than the existing system as at least people can vote for multiple candidates in preference.

My goal (for the UK) is Proportional Representation.
