Do people not understand how elections work?

In reference to the petition to call for another general election. You don’t get to say “oh wait, actually I’ve changed my mind. I had no clue the Labour Party would try to redistribute wealth and it would impact me so I want a re do!”

Also, so many bots / people from Indonesia filling it in. I have a certain group of people on my fb sharing it. Do they really think we’ll get to vote again? And would they all vote Conservative now?

Am I the one missing something?

Nope

But let's have one a week just for the shits and giggles 🤭

BarbaraHoward · 25/11/2024 13:48

Facts have no place any more OP.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 25/11/2024 13:49

It'd be funny if it wasn't so concerning.

TubularBeIIs · 25/11/2024 13:51

I think it's sending a strong message to Starmer that he is not doing a good job (understatement). He doesn't seem to have a clue and he keeps persisting.

Today I read he's introducing a new law re spiking drinks. He's a liar! There has been a law against this for years.

letsallchant · 25/11/2024 13:54

Clearly a lot of people don't know how these things work. It is worrying.

As for Starmer 'persisting' I'm not sure how many people think they could have solved this country's many and deep rooted problems seamlessly in 5 months, but I'm sure some do and will let us all know. 😒

You might find this article helpful. Starmer's response.

As for the spiking drinks of course it's already illegal. It's worth reading what Labour have ACTUALLY said they're going to do.
Home secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Spiking is a disturbing and serious crime which can have a damaging and long-lasting impact on victims.

“That’s why today we are taking decisive action to prevent this devastating crime and to crack down on perpetrators, by introducing a new criminal offence for spiking and launching specialist training for thousands of bar staff nationwide.

Keir Starmer Dismisses Petition Demanding General Election As More Than 2 Million Sign It

The prime minister said he was "not surprised" that lots of people are unhappy with his government.

I'm starting to really dislike this country. I used to love the British, thinking they were tolerant, humorous, good natured and on the whole fairly well educated and intelligent (obviously not everyone but still). However, lately all I see is stupidity, mean spiritedness, racism, little England mentality. I remember I used to be shocked when someone was openly racist or xenophobic but now these voices seem to be deafening out all other voices. It seemed to become noticeable after Brexit but even more so now. All I hear about is small boats, supposed two tier policing, "people have had enough".

There's so many really serious problems facing the country and facing the world but people are obsessing about the wrong things. I know many people are living shit lives, and I'm sure they have had enough, but they're punching down rather than looking at the real causes.
It's not just here, I know. It's the same in America and other places.
This petition is just the latest example of stupidity.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/11/2024 14:08

Apparently there are states in the USA where the most common google search is “How can I change my vote?” - implying that people who voted for Trump are already regretting it, even before he is inaugurated.

bluefingertips · 25/11/2024 14:12

Not heard of this petition but I would have assumed its a way for people to express their discontent with the direction the government is going rather than a genuine bid to get another election. Its likely to get more attention and coverage than asking people just to sign a petition saying they disagree with xyz the government is doing. And it has. So its worked as a publicity strategy. As you posting on here about it proves.

alteredimage · 25/11/2024 14:15

It's those people who voted reform to punish the Tories. In part because Rishi was not right wing enough. So they split the Tory vote and Labour got elected. Now they realise they prefer Conservatives to Labour and should have voted for them.

Tough.

kirinm · 25/11/2024 14:18

Being signed by people in different companies with anonymous accounts on twitter encouraging people to use specific postcodes.

There's something quite worrying about people like Elon Musk actively trying to intervene in UK politics. Something even more worrying that so many stupid people think a petition will overthrow a democratically elected party.

kirinm · 25/11/2024 14:19

*countries!

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 25/11/2024 14:21

I long ago came to the conclusion that many people are not terribly bright.

WomensRightsRenegade · 25/11/2024 14:24

It’s an expression of discontent. Allowed in a free country. No-one signing it really believes it will lead to an election.

What’s fascinating is how it has triggered so many people. Usually the ‘well-off lefty liberal’ type that are ten-a-penny on here. There’s something very sneery about their response. How DARE the little people complain!

If you don’t like it, roll your eyes and move on with your life.

PermanentTemporary · 25/11/2024 14:24

It suggests that a lot of people feel very powerful, rather than powerless, given they even briefly think that their finger signing an online petition will move the entire constitution in their direction.

I do think if an election happened this week, the result would be different, though I'm not convinced I know what it would be.

kirinm · 25/11/2024 14:24

It's just such bullshit.

Do people not understand how elections work?
Topseyt123 · 25/11/2024 14:24

It's utterly ridiculous. People are quite simply thick. I mean that.

It does no such thing given that literally anyone can sign it and it's being signed by bots encouraged on twitter.

He's doing a great job as far as I'm concerned, as someone who read the manifesto.

Dreammalildream · 25/11/2024 14:26

What kind of women hating misogynist would you have to be to object to labour strengthening the laws around spiking as well?

LlynTegid · 25/11/2024 14:27

We should be objecting to the voting system we have. Which those in Belarus and Russia have too. Some form of PR would mean that we had a government supported by the majority, not a minority of those who voted.

Given that most of Labour seem think that women have penises, I don’t think anyone is under the illusion that this government will do anything to ensure safety, privacy and dignity for women and girls.

You're not helping by using the derogatory term "Little England".

Being concerned about small boat crossings is not racist and anyone who thinks it is, is adding to the problem of discontent that some people are feeling.

MrTwatchester · 25/11/2024 14:33

So much of this online activism is started and / or exacerbated by malign forces, most of it isn't real. People keep starting threads about whether WWIII is coming, without realising it's already started. There are countries out there which benefit hugely from a divided, unstable and febrile political environment in the UK, US and Europe.

People need to calm the fuck down, get off social media and go for a walk. Offline, the world is just muddling quietly along.
